I've posted this many times before, but it bears repeating as it's an excellent all in one resource.

Adventureland's attraction line up hasn't changed much, but it's retail selection is a far cry from what it used to be:

The Adventureland Veranda was this land's equivalent to Cosmic Ray's or Pecos Bills. A large, high volume cafeteria restaurant. It closed in the early 90s, briefly reopened later in the decade and then sat dormant for a long time before reopening as Skipper Canteen. The Jungle Cruise restaurant is a fun, welcome addition, but unfortunately does not satisfy guest demand for meals in the same way the Veranda was designed to function.

I also like the photo of the old Treasure Room scene from Pirates which had a lot more animatronics.
I have one of these booklets too, from my honeymoon in 1986. Good times. Great thread.

What I liked about the parks back then was everything fit the theme and area of they park they were in. Yes there was IP in 80s, it was less thrown in your face like it is now. What I loved the most was stepping into each land and the feeling of being in the Wild West, or the future with no sounds of Ca-chow Ca-chow or "Infinity and Beyond"

OMG that's terrible. The shock and horror a child will go through seeing that. 🙄
I don't even mind that WDW evolved to a point where they don't want their characters using firearms (though it doesn't bother me personally) or any other cultural change. The problem to me is that WDW has been hallowed out of most tertiary attractions, restaurants, and stores in the name of budget cuts making the experience of visiting not only more expensive but also vapid.

It's just a constant reminder that the thing that we fawn over and think about incessantly is a publicly traded company and not a friend.

The Magic Kingdom was built by a publicly traded company. There’s nothing about being publicly traded that required them to change their business especially since they don’t actually share the specifics of each venue in a park.

I agree. I don't mind they have evolved from that. It's more that many are shocked Disney had things like that. Some are shocked there is cannons aimed at Big Thunder on Tom Sawyer Island. I'm shocked so many live such a sheltered life

I do agree with so many things gone now. It made each land felt more whole. IMO the best part about the parks back then was it didn't rely on IP for everything. IMO the best MK attractions aren't tied to a movie franchise. Big Thunder, Pirates, Haunted Mansion are the best attractions.

Everyone that says “I think ____ is better than ever!!” Obviously either has no experience or some sort of trauma…

No need to get deep into it though 🤓
Or they aren't old senile fools stuck in the past holding onto pepperidge farm memories in an attempt to starve off irrelevance and the fact that time is passing them by.

You must real fun at parties.

My question to those so excited for Monsters Inc and Cars and don't care for the old to go. Why can't there be a balance of old and new?

There’s a large group of older people who don’t fit this category. They simply realize that life is too short to spend it obsessing over or being unhappy about the changes that come their way.

They (we) find the joy in WDW as it is today not because we’re settling for less but because we truly enjoy what we see there now. It’s difficult for some to understand that mindset.

Devil's advocate, same can be said for the other side too. It's difficult to understand why we liked what the parks used to be. When we see attractions we have nostalgia for go and get upset don't say "nobody ride it anyway" .

Let’s not forget all the live entertainment that’s been cut!

Citizens of Main Street
Banjo Brothers in Frontierland
Fantasyland Saxaphone quartet
Adventureland Steel Drums
Fife and Drums in Liberty Square
Jugglers in Storybook Circus
Merlin in Fantasyland

Already been mentioned…. But the Horseshoe of course!

I do understand why people liked what the parks used to be. I’m not sure what attraction you’re referring to but some attractions were always more popular than others.

Live entertainment is the best! I remember how much we loved live bands at weddings, which you hardly ever see anymore.
