Trip Report Magic Bands, FP+ and a Baby? A January 2014 TR.

Hey guys! It's been a while since my last trip report - so sorry for long hiatus! I've only been back home from my January trip to my favorite place on the planet for less than a week and I'm ready to talk about it!
You can check out my pre trip report here:
http://forums.wdwmagic.com/threads/january-2014-pre-trip-report.877636/#post-5889436

This trip was different than any other trip to Walt Disney World that I've ever taken. So many new and unexpected things! First, this was our first trip with our 16 month old son, Grant. Secondly, my parents came along and they haven't been to Disney since 1989. And lastly, this was our first time using Magic Bands and FastPass+. How did Grant do? How did we like My Magic+? Stay tuned to find out!

Now for the details:
When: January 5-12, 2014
Where: Disney's Caribbean Beach Resort
Why: Because it's been WAY too long!
What: 7 Day Park Hoppers and the Disney Dining Plan
How: By car from North Carolina
Who: The cast of characters for this trip...

First you have Myself, my wife Brittany and Grant:

Brittany's sister, Brooke (with Grant):

My parents, Karl and Kay (with Grant):

And Brittany's parents, Scott and Pam (with an infant Grant):

After work, everyone met at Scott and Pam's house, packed up the cars and by 6:00pm we were on the road heading down I-77 south! Scott, Pam and Brooke were in one car while Karl, Kay, Brittany, Grant and myself were in the other. Our plan for day 1 was to try to get to Port Wentworth, Georgia where I had booked rooms at the Holiday Inn Express for the night. Port Wentworth is approximately 4 hours from where we live in North Carolina, so we figured that would be a good stopping place for the night.
Grant did great in the car, he even slept a little bit! When he wasn't sleeping, he was watching Disney movies on his car DVD player that Santa brought him for Christmas! Great idea, Santa! ;)
When we checked in to our rooms, we were happily surprised that they had put us in adjoining rooms as requested. Just like in the cars, Scott, Pam and Brooke were in one room, while Karl, Kay, Brittany, Grant and I were in the other. Grant LOVED running back and forth from room to room!

I let Grant borrow my Cowboys toboggan because it was cold that night!!

Grant did okay that night, but ended up sleeping between us in the bed. He's not used to sleeping in his pack and play. Surprisingly, we all got a good night's sleep.

Saturday January 4, 2014

We were up bright and early and after a lovely continental breakfast, were loaded back up in the cars and back on the road in no time! We only had about 4 or 5 more hours remaining on our drive to Orlando, so we decided to stop at the outlets in St. Augustine to do a little shopping (gotta get rid of that Christmas money) and to give Grant a little break.
It wasn't long after leaving the hotel, a little over an hour, until we saw this little beauty...

Again it was cold, cold, cold, so Grant stole my hat again...

After we stopped at the outlets, we decided to head on in to Orlando to see if we could check in to our hotel for that night. Yes, it was another Holiday Inn Express, but this time we were 11 minutes from WDW! The hotel was actually on International Drive and we could see the Characters in Flight balloon at Downtown Disney from our room! Talk about making our excitement grow even more!!
We arrived at the hotel and were glad to see that our rooms were ready (although not adjoining this time), so we went ahead and checked in. By this time everyone was getting pretty hungry, so we packed into the cars again and headed down the street a few blocks and ate dinner at TGI Fridays. After dinner I suggested that we go check out Downtown Disney! Everyone agreed and thought that was a great idea, so we headed that way.
Once we got to DTD, we realized this may have been a bad choice. If you are driving your own car, it is a nightmare to not only get into the parking lot, but dang near impossible to find an actual parking space (much less two). So, sadly, we called it a night and headed back to the hotel to get some sleep so that we could get an early start the next day - our first day at Disney!

Sunday January 5, 2014

We got up fairly early, had breakfast in the lobby and were on the road to WDW by 9:30am. About 10 minutes or so later we saw this beautiful sight...

We were all so excited and were acting like children, except for Grant, who was looking at all of us like we were crazy. After a few turns, we had arrived at our home for the next week - Disney's Caribbean Beach Resort!

It was around 10:00 am by this point and we went to see if there was any chance our rooms were ready. Surprisingly, two of our three rooms were! We were put in Barbados in building 16, which was really close to the main lobby. Karl and Kay were in one room, Brittany, Grant and I were in another, and Scott, Pam and Brooke were in the other. Again, we had adjoining rooms with my parents. This would be invaluable during the week in getting Grant to sleep and also allowing us to sneak out a couple of nights for some "grown up" time in the parks. In no time, we had put our luggage in the rooms and were headed toward the bus stop and to our first park of the trip! Where would we go first??

On the way to the bus stop...

Grant waiting on the bus with Pam and Scott...

After about 10 minutes or so, our bus arrived! We were making a special first stop to none other than...
Disney's Animal Kingdom!

Normally, I HAVE to go to Magic Kingdom first and last on EVERY trip, but this trip was a little different. You see, January 5 was the last day that the Festival of the Lion King would be showing until it reopens in it's new building in Africa this summer. Needless to say, we had to go see it first thing!
As soon as we got seated, we were on our way to Animal Kingdom!

Thanks everyone!!

How was your stay at CBR? I am staying there this weekend and I've never been or heard anything about it.

It was great! Really close to Hollywood Studios and EPCOT, but kind of far from Magic Kingdom. The resort itself is HUGE, so getting a room close to a bus stop is a plus. Our rooms were clean and rather roomy for a moderate. We didn't spend much time in the rooms though. It was perfect for us! Hope that helps.

We were on our way to Animal Kingdom!
Grant loved the buses! This was his first experience with public transportation since we live in a small town. He just looked around at all the people and enjoyed looking out the windows. As you parents know, a 16 month old does not like to sit still, so the grandparents took turns holding him on the bus...

Before long, we heard the Lion King music and we knew we had arrived at our first park of our trip! Scott, Pam, Brooke, Brittany and I were exited to see Festival of the Lion King before it closed down because it's one of our favorite shows at Walt Disney World. We had built it up to Karl and Kay, so we had them excited too. Animal Kingdom didn't exist the last time they were at WDW.
We were there and we headed toward the entrance, but not without stopping for a family pic...

Grant waited patiently and people watched as some of us had to go through the bag check...

Finally, everybody is through bag check! Let's go in the park already!!

Like always, the Disney cast members were outstanding. Grant had a "First Visit" button on his stroller, and everyone was commenting on it being his first trip to the World...

Ok, enough fooling around! On to our first attraction of the trip and the whole reason we came to Animal Kingdom - The Festival of the Lion King!
Which way do we go, Pops? (Pops is Grant's name for Scott)

Somebody needs a haircut... [foreshadowing]

Grant figured out the best route to FotLK so, off to Camp Minnie Mickey we went.
We passed the Tree of Life on our way, so I had to get the obligatory shot...

We arrived at Camp Minnie Mickey and headed toward the entrance to the Festival of the Lion King. Grant spotted Huey, Dewey, Louie and Daisy on the way.
Look, Aunt B! (Grant's name for Brooke)

A line was already forming for Festival of the Lion King, so we joined the crowd. After just a few minutes, the doors opened and we filed in.

We sat in the lion section because Grant makes a pretty good lion sound.
The show was just as good we we had remembered and the newbies liked it too! Grant really enjoyed the show as well. He was amazed at everything that was going on throughout the theatre and he LOVED the music! He was dancing in the bleachers.
Here are a few shots from the show...

After the show, we decided to head to the park that we had originally planned on going to on that day before we found out that FotLK would be closed for the rest of our trip (and beyond) - Disney's Hollywood Studios! Before we headed toward the exit, Grant wanted a snack. He was still smiling about the fantastic show he just witnessed as he ate...

As we exited the park, we showed Karl and Kay the Rainforest Cafe because we would be eating there later in the week. I know the place doesn't get the best publicity, but we enjoy the food and the atmosphere and try to eat there once a trip. We also thought all the animals and all that goes on inside there would entertain Grant. Anyway, off to the bus stop we went.
After a short bus ride, we arrived at Hollywood Studios! I love all of the Disney parks, and while the Magic Kingdom is my favorite, DHS isn't too far behind because of all the great attractions it has!
In we go...

After everyone got through bag check, we headed down Hollywood Blvd and made that right on Sunset toward our first FastPass+ of the trip. Can you guess where we were headed??

If you read my pre trip report, you would have known we had FastPass+ for Rock 'n' Rollercoaster from 1:10-2:10. Although I will be honest, we did have to change a few FP+ during our week.
Allow me to talk about Magic Magic+ for a second. I liked the Magic Bands. I thought they were convenient and much easier than digging out Keys to the World cards. What I didn't like (and probably never will) is having schedule what rides I want to ride and when 60 days in advance! I'm the type of person who used Legacy FastPass 6 or 7 times a day. I don't know why Disney could just make the switch to Magic Bands, but keep Legacy FastPass. Oh well... I guess I've got to go with the changes and just get over it.
Anyway, sorry about the little rant.
We headed in to the queue for RnRC, scanned our Magic Bands, and in no time we were about to board our limo!

RnRC was awesome as usual! As we exited, I looked up and saw this view of my area of the park.

After our ride on RnRC, our next FastPass+ wasn't until 2:55 at Toy Story Midway Mania, so with the stand by wait time for Tower of Terror being 40 minutes, we headed toward a different area of the park. It was about 2:20 at this point, so we didn't want to venture too far away from Pixar Place. I suggested we check out how long the line was for the Great Movie Ride. Knowing it wouldn't be long, we walked toward the big hat. Sure enough, when we got to the entrance, the stand by was only 10 minutes! We headed inside.
We waited for just a few minutes in the big movie room and then we boarded our ride vehicle and were ready for our ride through the movies!

As many have said, the Great Movie Ride experience mostly depends on your tour guide (much like the Jungle Cruise). That being said, we had a good one, so it was a very enjoyable ride!
Grant was pretty tired from a busy morning, so he didn't make it to the first scene - he was out!

As soon as our journey through the movies was over, it was almost time for our FastPass+ reservations for Toy Story, so we headed over to Pixar Place.
Grant rode with me and loved it! Although he wouldn't keep the 3D glasses on, he loved pulling the rope and the way the ride vehicle swung around from screen to screen! I can't remember our scores, but it doesn't matter - we had a blast!
After Toy Story, Scott checked the times guide and saw that there was a showing of Beauty and the Beast at 4:15. We had just enough time to get over to Tower of Terror to use our 3:55 FatPass+ before heading over to catch the show!
Our entire party wasn't going to ride Tower, so Scott, Pam, Brooke and Grant went on over to Beauty and the Beast to grab some seats. Karl, Kay, Brittany and I headed in to the Hollywood Tower Hotel...

Tower of Terror was better than I remembered! I always go back and forth between Tower, Everest and Space as to which is my favorite attraction at WDW. It usually comes down to which one I rode last.
Uh oh, it was 4:10, so we high tailed it over to meet the rest of our group at Beauty and the Beast.
We made it and sat down just as the show started! To my surprise, Grant stayed awake the entire time and loved it! He liked all the characters and the music/singing.

No matter what the Radio Harambe guys say, Beauty and the Beast is a fun and entertaining show and we all enjoyed it very much.
By now, it was getting close to dinner time. We had 5:25 ADRs at 50's Prime Time Cafe!

None of us had ever eaten here before but we were excited because we'd heard nothing but good things about the place.
We checked in a few minutes early and relaxed at the tables by Echo Lake for a bit while we waited for our name to be called. At around 5:35 or so, they called our name and we headed inside. The place was packed! We sat down and placed our orders and had fun discussing the days events up to this point.

I can't remember what everyone got and I didn't take any food pics (it's different with a little one in restaurants), so, sorry about that. Just know that everyone enjoyed their meals and we all left stuffed. Stuffed would become a theme of the week...
After dinner, we were almost ready to call it a night, but we overheard a cast member say that tonight was the last night that the Osborne Lights would be on display. So, even though Scott, Pam, Brooke, Brittany and I had seen them back in December of 2010, Karl, Kay and Grant had never seen them. We really liked them back in 2010 and were excited to get the chance to see them again so we headed toward the Streets of America to check them out!

Absolutely. Definitely agree about the rooms for a moderate. My girlfriend and I weren't in the rooms much either so not a big deal anyways. Thanks for the info!!

Awesome TR so far. keep it up. Quick question.. Did you guys use the child swap? if so how did it work and go? We are traveling in two weeks for the first time with our DS who is 7 mos and we love rides and didnt know how the childswap realistically works. Is there much time between the hand offs and what not. We are worried we might have to pass on some of favorite rides in fear of not understanding the childswap thing or having to wait in line again for the other adult to ride. any tips/pointers and explanation of what to expect if you used it would be great. Thanks

Sunday January 5 concluded...

After a great dinner at 50's Prime Time, we noticed that the park was really thinning out. I guess the crowds had left after Fantasmic and headed to another park. Our plan was to head over to the Streets of America to catch the Osborne Lights on the last night they would be showing.
Here are some shots from the Osborne Lights...

And a group shot by one of the PhotoPass photographers (Grant was out - long day...):

After admiring the lights for a while, we decided to head back to the room so everybody could get some sleep. Grant was clearly worn out and we all had an early get up for a breakfast ADR in the morning.
Goodnight, Hollywood Studios...

We headed back to Caribbean Beach and put Grant to bed. Since we had adjoining rooms with my parents and they were in for the night, Brittany and I thought we would sneak back out to the Magic Kingdom (which was open until midnight - thanks EMHs!). We figured, hey, how often are we at Disney World? So let's take advantage of it! Plus, today was the last day Splash Mountain and Casey's Corner was going to be open for quite some time. Brittany loves Casey's Corner's corn dog nuggets and Splash Mountain is one of our favorite attractions in all of WDW, so we hopped back on a bus to the MK!
This bus ride seemed to take forever and we finally arrived at the Magic Kingdom at about 10:05pm. We headed inside and made our way down Main Street, USA toward Casey's. I always look forward to that first time on Main Street on each trip. There's nothing like it. The castle loomed in the not too far distance, still decked out in the Christmas dream lights.
Unfortunately, Casey's was already closed when we reached the corner. We could see the cast members cleaning through the windows. We were sad to see it closed and we knew we had just missed it! Oh well, next time...
We headed through the main hub and took a left toward Adventureland! The castle looked awesome as usual...

We finally arrived in Frontierland and saw a discouraging sight. No logs were coming down the last drop on Splash and we didn't hear any screaming. Not a good sign. When we got closer to the entrance to the ride, several cast members were lined up turning people away. I went up and asked (already knowing the answer) if the ride would be up again before the night was over or possibly the next day. No was the answer to both.
Totally discouraged we, thought about just leaving, but we sucked it up and chose to enjoy the Magic Kingdom and the attractions that were open - which turned out to be not many... My only beef with EMH is that if a park is going to be open 2 hours later, then EVERYTHING in the park needs to be open for 2 more hours. If not, then just close the park at the regular time. It's the least Disney can do for THEIR guests staying at THEIR resorts paying enormous rates. Sorry, off my soapbox now.
Because of all of the closed attractions, the ones that were open had ridiculous wait times, so we ended up walking all the way around the park. We finally ended up in Tomorrowland at Space Mountain. By this time it was 11:15 and the stand by wait was only 25 minutes, so we got in line. Space was great and made our late night trip to the MK not a total waste.
After Space, we decided to call it a night since we did have to get up early in the morning. We walked over to the castle and around it toward the exit...

We got back to our room at CBR at approximately 12:20am and quickly drifted off to sleep. What a first day!

Thanks!
We didn't really have to use the child swap. We had a group of 8 (including Grant) and 2 of them get major motion sickness, so we always had somebody that didn't ride the "thrill" rides. The only time we even came close to using it was at Soarin'. We all had FastPasses for it and all of us wanted to ride. So, everyone but Brittany, Grant and I rode and then Brittany and I were going to ride while the others watched Grant. The first group took forever (even with FP) and so as our FP window was closing, I went up to the cast member and he gave me what was essentially a non-expiring FP for me and up to 2 others to ride. He said it was basically like child swap. I'm not sure if that's how it always works or not though... Hope that helps!

You go up to the cast member & tell them you are doing the child swap. Then the CM will give you a paper FP that you give to the person waiting w/child & you get in line, ride, then you switch off.
