2-3 years longer if stored in a cold place

I don't know about the lifespan, but I do know they're relatively delicate.
Opened one of mine up and moved the entrails into a gutted casio watch. The watch did not work at the parks, and let me tell you, it was rather embarrassing trying to scan a watch repeatedly in front of a cast member with nothing happening LOL.

I didn't damage the electronics at all, except I very-lightly scratched a part of the board, but it wasn't a component that would have made the whole thing stop working.

There may have been a small metal button or two but the case was plastic.

That was probably enough the antenna is a LC (inductance+capacitance) resonant circuit metal in proximity changes the resonant frequency. Great idea though

Yup! I would have pulled those metal buttons. You want zero metal near the magic band antenna.

Very nice indeed, My taste in retro is more steampunk than retro tech although I do some retrocomputing with HP 300 series computers from the late 80's early 90's
