M:S opening day celebrities, events?

The new official Disney M:S website is publicizing Aug. 15 as the opening date for the attraction (the old "soft opening" date, as opposed to October, when the push was supposed to be begin).

Anyway, since that date, Aug. 15, is now public, I wondered if anyone knew of any celebrities or special events that would be there on that date. Usually, there are celebrities and "stuff" there every time they open a major event (like on October 1 for the 100 YOM, the 25th anniversary party in 1997, and for the Millennium Celebration).

In the past they announced opening dates but kept mum on celebrities, but sure enough every time, the next day's Orlando Sentinel reported all the celebrities or special events that were there...

Just wondered about this.... maybe even a ribbon-cutting?

Anyone know anything?

You make it sound bigger than any US Military operation.

I can see the code name for the operation Mission: This Rules- Spider-Man Sucks.

Guess Disney has to start somewhere while Universal had around 4 years to hype Spiderman...

The only reason that I have to question this is that ABC and the M:S website are both touting that on August 16, ABC will be presenting "Mission to Mars" with introductions and cut-ins by Jerry O'Connell and astronaut Buzz Aldrin to celebrate the August 15 opening of EPCOT's new attraction. This is about as public and national as you can get. And the October 8 date is not featured at all (that I saw) on the M:S website, just August 15 and stuff about the previews featured on the ABC movie presentation.

That's what I wrote ... only some LOCAL press will be present on august 15

And about the grand opening on october 9... there's no need for featuring on the website yet, it's not going to be open to the public, it's by invitation only...

And what my confusion is, is that ABC is doing a big NATIONWIDE (not local) broadcast of the movie with Jerry O'Connell and Buzz Aldrin cut-ins on August 16. That by definition is a nationwide announcement.

The "Click here for news about M:S" scrolling thing on the official website also goes to a panel that says this:

"Mission: SPACE, presented by HP, is set to open on August 15, 2003 at Epcot®. Five years in the making, it's the most technologically advanced attraction ever created by Disney. In association with former NASA advisors and astronauts, Walt Disney Imagineering has developed Mission: SPACE as the first ride system to take guests face to face with the thrill of rocketing into outer space. "The sensations are what the astronauts actually experience, but it's accessible to everyone," said Susan Bryan, Walt Disney Imagineer and co-producer of Mission: SPACE.

Catch the network broadcast premiere of "Mission to Mars" on ABC Saturday, Aug. 16th at 8:00pm et/pt. Actor Jerry O' Connell will take you on a behind-the-scenes tour of Mission: SPACE throughout the broadcast--and look for a special appearance by Buzz Aldrin!"

So, that is why it seems that the "public" date, as celebrated on national television, is August 15. No mention of the October date there.

Will they be on national television twice?

Anyway, please let us know if anyone knows about ribbon-cutting ceremonies, etc., with dignitaries or celebrities on either date.

I'm pretty sure they already taped this... while working on my website, I stumbled across an official pic of Buzz at M:S...

Hi prberk. I'm going to give you some advice that I wish I had gotten a few months ago. Run.... run far away from this thread. I was once like you... looking at facts and logic to support certain arguements but alas, it was no use. This soft VS. official opening topic has been very hot on the boards since the first announcement in April. I agree with everything you said and if you ask me, the ride is officially opening on August 15th and some random celebration that only certain people are invited to will occur on October 9th for some unknown reason. As far as guests are concerned, the grand opening is August 15th (This is the ONLY date ever advertised by Disney.) As far as WDWMagic members are concerned, it is a soft opening, (despite the fact that the August date has nothing in common with any soft opening in the history of theme parks) Like I said, it's a loosing battle. :(

Actually it's from M:S. Stands for International Space Training Center.

I have a question about the 9th... the official disney site says that FW closes at 3PM...now...will everything else be open besides Mission:Space...or does ALL of Future World close down for one attraction's grand opening? (And another thing...will there still be a showing of Illuminations and will WS be open at "regular" operating hours?

October 9 2003, Epcot will be closed to the public, at 3.00 pm.

That goes for Future World AND World Showcase....

Alas... NO Illuminations that night...

Future World will open at 9.00 am.
World Showcase will open at 11.00 am.
