It has been a very long evening to say the least.

I have (had) a 95 Ford Ranger pickup that has 80,000 miles. It is paid for and I have been contiplating trading it in for another vehicle. This weekend my wife and I spent 5 hours at a dealer trying to work out a deal. First for a Jeep Cherokee Sport, then a PT Cruiser and finally a Chrystler Voyager. After thinking it over I had decided to wait it out until at least the end of the year. That was until my ride home from work this afternoon.

After exiting Interstate 394 onto highway 169 I had to floor it in order to get into traffic because people do not know how to let merging traffic in. Well, after I merged in and took my foot off the accelerator the truck kept going faster. At first I didn't really notice because I was heading down hill but then it hit me when the truck was at 70 then 75 and I wasn't pressing down that much on the pedal. I was begining to panic when I topped 80 and the brakes were doing nothing as I was weaving in and out of rush hour traffic. I quickly took the truck out of gear and was able to get over into the shoulder just before smacking into the back end of a semi-truck.

I was okay and no one else had gotten hurt. I guess someone was trying to give me a sign to trade the truck in and believe me I received it loud and clear. I had never been so frightned in my life in a vehicle. Not just for me but whoever might had gotten in my way. Needless to say I got the accelerator unstuck and was able to drive it to the dealer we were at Saturday and traded the Ranger in.

Sorry for rambling but I had to get this off my chest. I'm just a little wired tonight after this.

Freak, I'm relieved to hear that neither you nor anyone else was hurt. It makes us realize (as if these past few weeks didn't) that we only think we have control over our lives!

Thanks everyone. It was a humbling experience.

And thanks to that I'm now driving a Mini-Van. I'm 30 years young, have no kids and I'm driving a Mini-Van. Man, I feel old. :( It will be great for the dogs though. :)

Don't think of it as a mini-van. Just think of it as an oversized sports car that doesn't handle tight curves well :D

Seriously, since you are not all that far from the mid-life-crisis zone, i feel I should tell you that most people don't even notice you in those things till you start cutting them off in traffic and shining your lights in their rear view mirror... Oh wait, no that's people in SUVs

Really, I don't think we guys are oversensitive about that because we know what we would like to be driving and think that others think we are lame because we are driving something else instead.

:)

I think it's a great car! Makes my Saxo look even tinier than it is (if that is possible!) - and I have two kids to fit in the back!

Just tell people you had to get it for the dogs...that sounds cool.  But really, I am happy you are now driving something safe. We don't want anything to happen to you! :)
