Lost Camera - Any Suggestions?

Just got back from 4 days Universal/Islands. I lost my small digital camera and case during the second spinning sequence on MIB (came out of my jacket fleece pocket) on the very first day. I immediately reported it to the ride attendant and went to Lost and Found every day but to no avail. To be frank - I didn't get a warm fuzzy that anyone particularly cared - Lost and Found wouldn't even take my name and number they just kept handing me business cards so I can keep calling and calling. I should have thought to put the camera in a locker before the ride, I know. Nevertheless, I am disappointed by Universal's nonchalant reaction.

You probably don't want to hear this, but that's precisely the reason why Universal asks people not to carry items like cameras on certain rides. And that's why they offer (FREE) lockers to store your belongings in while you ride. You could maybe write a letter to the company, but technically, you broke one of their rules that they make a pretty big point of conveying to guests, so I'm not sure they'd do anything for you. My guess is that if it fell out into your ride vehicle, it's possible another guest might have found it and kept it. But if it fell out of the vehicle entirely, then I would think it should have been found by an employee by now. That being the case, if it hasn't been turned in to Lost and Found by now, then it may never turn up. Did you try calling the number on the business cards that they kept giving you?

Alright. This is coming straight from a former Universal team member.

If you lost something on a ride and reported it to a team member, you can be sure they were looking for it, and not to give it back to you. 9 times out of 10, the only reason an item is even searched for is to keep it. Lost and Found isn't known as that amongst UO team members - It's known as Lost and Thank You. So if it didn't turn up at Lost and Found at the end of the night, it either didn't make it out of the track in one piece or it made it out of the track in the pocket or bag of a team member...with the latter being the more likely of the two.

Sorry, but that's just the reality of the situation.

When were you a team member there? I find it hard to believe that they don't have measures in place to prevent employee theft. I also find it VERY difficult to believe that you aren't exaggerating just a tad. There is no way that ANY company would tolerate the level of employee theft that you are painting a picture of.

Hot damn. For real? That's crazy. :(

I remember leaving a Goosebumps pack in the San Fran restroom near 10 years ago - it had my camera, some money, etc. Went to L&F, they didn't have it, but a few weeks later I received it in the mail with everything intact (though when I had my photos developed a shot from inside L&F turned up  ) and that made me extremely happy. Of course, this was near 10 years ago.

Summer 06-Summer 07.

Trust me, not exaggerating. It's a completely different view from the attractions attendant side of things. And of course companies don't tolerate that sort of thing...but when rides have areas of ride track that team members can't access because they're tech crew only...one can easily chalk the missing item up to it landing in one of those areas. I can't even begin to explain how many items were never found at Mummy: cell phones, cameras, iPods, Blackberries, sunglasses, hats...you name it. And guests aren't the only ones team members steal from: It happens a lot in team member break rooms as well.

Bottom line: Theft is something that occurs A LOT at Universal. On a daily basis.

I stopped by in person every day we were there. Subsequent to leaving I have called several times. I get voicemail each time even during the middle of the day and nobody returns my calls. I've pretty much given up getting the camera back - now I'm just looking for a little courtesy.

As a current UO Team Member...

Of course there is going to be some employee related theft when some slightly less then honest employees find an item of worth. It happened at the movie theater I worked at, it happened at Walt Disney World when I worked there, and it happens at Universal Orlando. However, for the most part, items of value that are found are turned in to Guest Services. We do have anti theft policies and procedures in place, however unfortunately they don't always work when people like the above poster come across items of value when they are by themselves.

If you lost your camera on MiB, and haven't come across it yet, I'm guessing it fell out in your ride vehicle and was picked up by another guest. The only theft issues I've ever personally experienced as a guest in the parks were both cell phones left in restrooms, and were both almost certainly picked up by other guests.
