Weight Watchers! I've lost over 40 lbs and feel I have the tools and lifestyle now to maintain it. No magic pill, just lots of willpower and determination. Good luck!

I agree 100%. It is no secret how to lose weight....we all know what to do. The problem is actually doing it! Weight Watchers is great because it is not really a "diet". It is a tool that teaches (or helps) you eat the right kinds of food and the right amounts of those foods. You can still go out for mexican food on the weekend, and you can still have a nice sized piece of cake at a birthday party...you just have to plan for it. You don't have to deprive yourself.

Some people have great success with the meetings, and others like to do it online. For me personally, I prefer online. I just enter in what I eat for each meal and snacks and it calculates the points and keeps track of them. It is basically an online food journal. Over time you learn which types of foods will be more filling and less points.

I know myself well enough to know that I would end up skipping meetings. It is hard enough for me to find time to go the gym...I really don't want to add another thing to my week. But the meetings help alot of people...it just depends on your personality.

Yup. Eat right, stay active, and you'll lose weight. Overindulge and be a lazy slug and you'll gain weight.

The key is to find the motivation. You have to want to be skinny MORE than you want to be lazy and more than you want to eat something naughty. If someone told me that I was going to be photographed nude and put on the cover of a magazine in 6 months, you can bet your @$$ I'd be living off rabbit food and working out 3 hours a day so as not to look ridiculous. Right now though, I have no one to impress, so therefore I don't care.

About 6 years ago I lost over 35 pounds, I've managed to keep most of it off and have now started to shed that little bit of extra fat and get toned and lean. I went from a size 12 to a size 2.

Here are some things that I recommend that have really worked for me:

The lose it app for the Iphone- It helps you track your calories in vs calories out and stores that info for you, it also keeps track of your goals. Its a great app and its free! I'd be lost without it.

The book "Winning by Losing" by Jillian Michaels

Carmen Electra's "Fit to Strip" DVD- there is no stripping involved, its mostly mat work- great for burning fat and lengthening and shaping muscles (begginer level)

Jillian Michael's "30 Day Shred" dvd (intermediate level)

Jillian Michael's "No More Trouble Zones" DVD (high intermediate level)

The American Heart Association "quick and easy cookbook"- it has some great recipes (they aren't all) but we've had very few duds so far and they really are easy.

Some advice:

drink plenty of water

try to avoid artificial sweeteners- studies have shown that they increase appetite.

Make sure you do some weight training. Muscle burns more calories at rest. Since I've been doing strength training its much easier for me to maintain my weight, even over the holidays and on vacation.

Try to avoid enriched flours- you want food that takes your body longer to digest and gives you energy throughout the day. Enriched flours are already partially digested by chemicals- yuck.

Don't starve yourself! Make sure you are having healthy snacks throughout the day.

What worked for me (although I wasn't the one with the baby fat ;) and my wife was The Daily Plate which is now on livestrong.com. You enter in your height and weight and how much weight you want to lose per week and it calculates how many calories you can eat each day. You chart your food that you've eaten and it tells you how many calories you have remaining for the day. It has a huge data base of food (which you can add to if you can't find what you're looking for). It helps you learn to make good choices and do portion control. You can eat whatever you want, just stay at or under you calorie limit for the day. Good luck!

I lost 30 lbs over a year and a half, and I have to say that while I have a diet, it's not a DIET. It's simply knowing what to eat, eating in moderation, and understanding my body more. A simple thing of eating less, eating better, and eating more often helps.

My tips?

-Go to the gym. Cardio and weights at least 3-4 times a week. I do a 45 minute cardio session, and around 90 minute wegiths/cardio (little much, yes, but I do a lot of ab stuff)
-Eat smaller meals spread throughout the day. It'll help with metabolism. Instead of having a huge plate of food, break down the meal into portions to eat. What I like to do is make some chicken, eat, then make some pasta based on how hungry I am, eat, and if I'm still hungry have some fruit. That'll be over an hour or so, and I can take breaks and do HW and such.
-Tell people your goals, they'll keep you motivated.
-I cannot stress portion control enough.
-Reward yourself for your successes. Have a beer, some ice cream, or cake. Just have a little bit, only once a week, etc.
-Get to know loving the feeling of working out, being "just full enough", etc.

Again, it is all simple things

1) IF calories eaten exceed calories expended you gain weight, if less, then you loose weight.

2) Exercise burns calories, but maybe not as much as you think. 15 minutes on a treadmill at a walking pace barely burns 100 calories

3) To control your hunger and keep your metabolism, blood sugar, and other body systems level, eat small portions throughout the day.

4) Read labels. If the food does not have a label, then look it up online.

PS: Exercise is like a drug, after a while you begin to crave it. There are days when it's cold, or rainy, or I am tired, and I don't want to drag myself out of bed to go run. Or maybe I don't think I have the time to go for a run. However, after the run, I have never regretted taking the time or getting out of bed. The natural endorphin high is more than worth it (not to mention the health benefits)
