I couldn't believe my ears. I went into the viking museum in Norway today for the first time. The soundtrack is pure unedited Lord of the Rings music. Not a rewrite, not a rescore. They are playing the themes from the movie from the actual movie soundtrack. Interesting, if not somewhat inappropriate. I am sure that Disney is a member of ASCAP however, meaning that they can play any licenced music from the industry just like any bar or supermarket.

ps: ASCAP stands for American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers & BMI for Broadcast Music Incorporated, and they are known as "performance rights licensing agencies".

Disney quite often uses the origianl recording of music, even from rival studio productions, go listen to the music played in the land.

I am guess you are implying that Disney is somehow not play9ing by the rules by playing the music.

It's much cheaper and easier than a new or re-scored soundtrack. The average guests doesn't notice or care. Perfection for the modern Disney Way!

Being a Tolkien enthusiast (to say the least). I could appreciate the LOTR music in Norway. While I was inside they were playing the Rohan theme. Tolkien was greatly inspired by Norse mythology (such as Beowulf) and actually modeled Rohan after the tribes from the old Norse sagas. So I believe that the music is actually very appropriate. Maybe this is a sign of bigger things to come, lol.

Thank you. I also didn't understand why the OP thought that this was so inapproriate?

As far as ASCAP and BMI are concerned...they aren't. They only enforce the obtaining of rights; they could care less what you play, as long as you have obtained the rights.

I seriously doubt playing LOTR music is any sign of anything. They play harry potter music at the hat at the studios. and so far we dont' have a Hogwarts. This is about the same as having the follwoing themes played at Soarin not all disney

The Boy who could fly
Air Force One
and there are more but i'm drawing a blank. I seem to think ET was played but i may be mistaken.

Someone from Disney was definately doing their LOTR homework. I really doubt that it is a coincidence that LOTR music would be playing in Norway.

Beowulf is not Norse mythology. It is the central text of literature written in Olde English. You are right that Tolkien drew inspiration from both Beowulf and Norse myths, they are separate streams in world literature and mythology.

I stand corrected. Tolkien did draw upon Beowulf and Old English as well as Norse mythology.
