Does anyone but me remember when the backlot tour was much longer? I seem to recall some kind of dog shaped saloon or something... And New York Street seems like it used to be closed to the public and it was a priveledge to be able to get out and walk along it. Am I the only one who remembers this stuff? I sure hope not.

NY street USED to be closed..yes...

They also had more sections to "walk thru" during the tour..and then there was the bluescreen demo in which you rode the Giant Bee....

Thanks NowInc ..yessss Johnny 5!! and I loved the movie the Navagator too :) since you mentioned it I remember all that walk through with all kinds of props. But now I am confused ..was the scene with Bette Midler a part of that? the lottery ticket I know it seemed every year when we went they had changed up so much.

I miss some of the longer walking sections. I also miss the part where you saw Bette Midler's lottery commercial. They showed it, then showed how all the stunts were done. It was very interesting and fun commercial/spot.

:)

I remember all that stuff too, The silver naviagator ships, the Rocketeer diner. It seems like they shortened everything to make room for more and more tourists on the ride

I remember in '92 which was right after Sister Act had come out, when you pasted the church Nuns would come out singing and dancing. Another change was when they put in Pizza Planet ..that use to be a movie/tv props area .. does anyone else remember the Baby being in there from the tv series Dinosaur?

I also miss the walk thru portion of the Backlot tour.

My sister and I were on the bee a long time ago.

I think the name of Bette's movie was The Ticket.

Didn't you also get to walk above all of the soundstages and George Lucas had some kind of spiel about using different shots and angles to improve a scene?

The only thing I remember from the prop shop was seeing the old figures from World of Motion and a bunch of garbage on shelves.

oops two different tours :(

I just watched our 92 video and the backstage tour with the canyon is different from the tour thats special effects .. but from my video (and not memory) you came off one and on to the other. I dont know if this is just how I taped it or if that was how it actually was. And the Props showcase I mentioned was over near muppet 4 D and they hadnt closed WOM yet. they had things like the gaint shoe from Honey I blew up the kid, Johnny Carson's set from the Tonight Show, and odds and ends from other movies and shows.

The Backstage Tour was originally a two-part attraction. Trams were originally boarded behind the Animation attraction, and they would then take you back through costuming, the greens department, then Residential Street, the boneyard (which has been added to slightly over the years), through Catastrophe Canyon, and then past New York Street. Guests would then get off at the current loading area which lead them into the Looney Bin from WHO FRAMED ROGER RABBIT. At this point there was no admittance to New York Street, nor was the Honey I Shrunk the Kids set built at this time, and the walkway running from the tram exit to where the Little Mermaid show is now was at the time closed off (only studio personel could go back there).

At this point in the attraction, you could loiter around the Studio Catering Co. area for as long as wanted before taking the second part of the tour, which began at the special effects water tank (with the original pre-Pearl Harbor show). You would then walk around the tank and enter the special effects workshop (with Johnny 5, etc.) and witness a short video about the train sequence from ________ Tracy. From here you entered the blue screen studio, where two guests would climb on the bee from Honey I Shrunk the Kids.
Next came the sound stages, where you would walk in the corridor above the stages. The conclusion of the sound stage area included a video on recording sound for movies (can't remember who hosted it), and a short video on editing (hosted by George Lucas, C3PO, and R2D2), and after that you would then watch the Bette Midler "The Ticket" film and walk through a stage housing all of the props and sets used for it.

The conclusion of the whole tour was a short fifteen-minute preview up upcoming movies (hosted by Michael Eisner) that took place in the Walt Disney Theater (where the One Man's Dream attraction is now), and the previews would change throughout the year as new movies came out. All-in-all it was around a full 2-hour show. I believe they changed it sometime around 1992-94, when the shows were split into two: the tram tour and the soundstage tour. They then changed it again to incorporate the water tank and the prop house into the tram tour, and making the soundstage corridor into its own attraction called Backstage Pass (which was closed most recently when I was there two weeks ago).

Hope that helps jog everyone's memory.
