Why do they place a lock symbol on some threads?

Because the thread was locked and no further replies are permitted....

Usually if a question has been answered to death, or no longer pertinent, the thread will be locked. If it has just gotten out of hand or turned into a flame war, it will likely be deleted entirely.

Locking a thread is sometimes the only way to get one under control. It's a headache saver for our wonderful mods.
