The family and I were walking around Epcot late one night, during Magic Hours, last week. We were heading towards the building with "Honey I Shrunk" when a cast member walked up to us and asked if she could help us out. She was dressed in plain cloths and only had a badge hanging off of her shirt. It was obvious she was "off duty" as she had a bag over her shoulder also. She then told us the ride we were going to was closed, and from there started to tell us all of the rides that were still open and then further went on with more tips about the park. Without knowing for sure, I am guessing she was an off-duty character. Her knowledge of the park and her overall enthusiasm to be helping led me to believe she was more than a vendor type of cast member. But she was beyond friendly and knowledgeable. It was just one of those cases where after all was said and done you wished you had gotten a name to pass on to management.

That's great that you found such a wonderful CM. Although, i'm a little upset to hear they were walking around with their ID out...which is a big no-no. So, they might have been new(er) to the company.

This might sound like an odd question, but what colour was her name tag?

If it wasn't a white badge, it wasn't a CM. I've been known to ask people who look lost or confused if they need help, but the badge I wear is dark blue [it's a tag anyone can purchase and have engraved], I sometimes have to explain that I'm not a CM [just a know-it-all busybody ]. As WDWKat26 says, a CM wearing their tag when not in costume is bad show and against the rules.

I know a lot of CMs keep their nametags on their ID lanyards when they aren't working, so this may have been a case where the CM had been going backstage and simply didn't take their lanyard off when they got back onstage.

It was late, but I think it was a white tag. It was clipped to the bottom of her shirt, not on a hanging lanyard. So maybe she wasn't a cast member?

Question: why is it against rules to have your tag out? Disney seems to have some odd rules.

Dear Disney Cast Members
Do not, repeat Do not, have your ID's displayed in any fashion while on stage or off-property. Also, Do Not, repeat, Do Not wear your nametags on a Disney Costume while off-property. No longer being a position to do anything about it in the company, all it does now is make me weep for the quality of cast members they are hiring

But she was on property. This was in front of the "Honey I Shrunk" show. Still, why is it so bad to have a badge showing?

I'll give you an example:
The other night I saw a CM during a parade off the clock wearing her ID and her nametag. Her hair was all messed up, she was wearing an army t-shirt and ripped cargo pants. Definitely not Disney look, right? It's bad show, and it's not allowed especially since you're off the clock and not working.

I've seen many managers walking around in business casual attire with their IDs hanging around their neck.

PS, many of the IDs are now yellow.

Because Managers' attire IS business casual. And, they are allowed to walk around with their ID's out, because they go on stage, and off stage frequently, so having their ID out is neccesary. Also, their attire could sometimes be confused for a guest's.

i used to be a cm and you could never walk around with ur id on you showing nor can you wear the costume/uniform to anywhere else than where you work. For example, If you work in tomorrow land....you will get in big trouble if you walk into fanstyland wearing the same costume/uniform. It was nice for that lady to do that for you but Disney real strict also on working off the clock. You are not suppose to show at all to guest that u are cm if ur not in costume/uniform. I hope this helps!!

O.K., well then for her own good, we will say she was working. Just happened to be going from building to building doing whatever her job was. I just assumed (oops) she was off the clock, but she was obviously working. Yup. Heck, one could say by her assissting my family and I that she was indeed working.

If it makes any of the current or former CM's feel better, she was very nicely dressed. Not business suit attire, but very nice appearance. Heck, she impressed me enough to do this thread.

I never said anything bad about the cm...I did stuff like that all the time....I was just clearing up what the other people said. My opinion cms are suppose to make the guest feel welcome....and to me that means on stage and off stage...in costume or not....regardless that cm should be recognized and there is something they get but I can't remember what it is called!! Sorry if you thought i was being negative!!
