Living with the Land Holiday Overlay

I certainly like the Christmas decorating that was done. It's a case of "be careful what you wish for" because if you want the narration to change and more money put into it, we may wind up with the greenhouse becoming a winter vortex and you enter the land of Frozen 2. Sometimes it's best to let something sit quietly in the corner with a little bit of attention thrown to it here and there. The less something eats away at the budget, the better and more likely it is to last.

No ROI on Christmas decorations.

Tell that to all the regional theme parks that are either expanding or starting Holiday Events this year. Six Flags Great America which is north of CHICAGO is open this December, the average high temp there is 34 degrees. Silver Dollar City sees a third of their yearly attendance in Nov-Dec. Also WDW’s most heavily attended week is due to this holiday. I doubt management is that stupid, they are simply trying to find the bare minimum required.

Event ≠ Decorations

Now, that makes me feel nostalgic. I loved The Lights of Winter and was sad when it was retired. Apparently, the reason for it's demise was that the technology to operate them became obsolete. I think Disney could've upgraded it with led lights, for one. I miss it. 😔
'Obsolete' reasoning was bogus. They upgraded and replaced most of the Osborne Lights before chucking them out of the park, as well !

Knott’s Berry Farm pulled out the stops this year! I can’t wait to see it in a week.

I very much enjoyed Knotts Merry Farm last year, I still feel SDC and Dollywood do Christmas the best but Knotts is definitely that next tier of regional parks along with Sea World Orlando and I would gladly go there (and sacrifice a day at DLR) when I go there again during the holidays.

Glad to hear that! I’ve never been there, and while researching it last night, I was shocked at how much entertainment they offer.

Please explain why Disney fans defend every budget cut to entertainment, while regional parks like Knott’s and Dollywood offer multiple robust, well produced shows.

Most of the time it is just because they just do not know what is being offered outside the Disney Bubble.

Last year I took two Disney fans to sea worlds christmas celebration. They had heard of it before and how great it was but "better then Disney world? No way!"

But then they went with me. They were shocked. They loved all the offerings from small to big and were surprised. We went into a show of oh wondrous night, they loved the show but when we came out of the theater the sun had set and as they walked out of the theater they looked at all the lights around the main Lagoon and all the trees lit up literally in the lagoon and one of them just began to tear up. " I haven't felt this much Christmas in a very long time" she said, "thank you for making me come to this".

That said, I don't want this to be a dis on Disney because I do want to applaud to their more recent efforts. While not perfect :

I really did enjoy Mickey's Very Merry Christmas party this year. I especially liked the holiday treatments to both Space Mountain in the Grand Prix. Please note I'm not advocating they continually do that for Space Mountain but just for the party it is a fun change. I truly enjoyed the variety of cookies that they offered with the hot chocolate. And that they had some other sample beverages as well. I think the parade has been night time plussed so nicely that it IS more magical to see the parade at night than it is during the daytime.

I like the holiday touches added to living with the land.

DHS has really uped its Christmas game. The tree on the lagoon with the oversized ornaments floating on the water is really one of the most spectacular Christmas backdrops in all of Walt Disney World. Hollywood Boulevard is truly decked out and so is Sunset Boulevard with its continuous holiday greetings show. And of course jingle bell jinge bam is a very enjoyable holiday nighttime spectacular that does not require separate Theme Park admission to enjoy.

I also love the new decorations at Animal Kingdom park. And whoa Dinoland!!!! Nice additions!

Vs the early 20teens It's nice to see Walt Disney World not phoning it in so much when it comes to Christmas.

The videos don't do it justice. Really cool in person. Feels like the greenhouse staff decorated for Christmas by reusing the F+W displays and adding some lights- it's a TON of lights. Extremely well done.

I’m gonna go out and say that Lights of Winter was so ugly during the day. To me the pay off was just not there, especially when you had the lights at Hollywood Studios. That’s my opinion of course, I know lots of people liked them.
That's my complaint about most outdoor Christmas decorations...if they aren't a full-bodied object, they're just an ugly wire-frame until nightfall. I'll take wreaths, garlands, and decorated evergreens any day over that.

Actually decorations ARE an event...there are many drive-through parks decorated with lights for the holidays... It is just decorations and they are crucial to a holiday celebration of any sort.
Agree. It annoys me greatly that the town I grew up in used to have many areas that citizens decorated of their own free will, but now that has died off and they've created a drive-through display you can see for $25 per car.
