Question about Under the Sea at Magic Kingdom:

Is there a show scene missing at the beginning of the ride? You board the clam shell and have Scuttle talking on your right. You then make your turn backwards to go under water. At that point, if you look to your right you can see a sizable hole in the facade that is the sand / beach where they've installed a plywood piece painted to match. If you look at the floor you can see the gap between the floor and plywood and the 2x4's that the plywood is attached to.

Just curious what happened there? I've noticed it that last couple of trips but always forget to ask about it.

Yep... The moonlit London flight sure is packed with serious details! Certainly a beautiful scene!

Not sure if you're being sarcastic, but the intended effect is delivered beautifully. It doesn't have to look good with the security lights on too. It was well done and it would take a very talented person to reproduce it at home. Some of the best effects are the simplest...see Haunted Mansion.

I actually prefer these kinds of effects (real craftsmanship and talent) versus today's computer driven graphics.

I think it shows that when Disney does things on the cheap, they get called on it, and at least are willing to go back and fix it.

Maybe if people complained more we would not get stuck with crap like Chester and Hesters....

Or even better...complained AND took their dollars elsewhere. Honestly in my humble opinion nothing will change until their purse gets hurt. Until that time they will continue the "nothing to see here...move along" mentality.

It's a solid C....though mainly because of the queue, you get to sit down for 5 minutes and it has A/C.
To my mind there is no way is it more than a C.

Out of interest, what current attractions would people give a B to?

It's meh to ok, there are parts I like and parts I really dislike. As it currently is, i'd give it a C ticket. It has the potential to become a good solid D with some relatively minor tweaking because there are elements of a good Disney ride present. The execution is really off though and the ride feels incomplete. A good start would be to implement the black lighting and extra props recently added to California's (there's still room to expand the black lighting further over there as well). Hopefully the upcoming refurb next year addresses this.

But still more work is needed beyond this. Ariel's face is very weird and needs some good artists to tweak it, perhaps with some decent input from the original animators of the movie for reference. I appreciate that she's an actual AA as opposed to limited motion figures, but her face needs major work. There are also too many recycled limited motion figures throughout. And the ride's final handful of scenes are a big mess (clumsy, badly paced and rushed).

So your gripe on a classic dark ride is that it looks bad with the lights on? What are your thoughts on Space Mountain when it goes 101?

I voted it a B. I can't give it a C. I think that they put a great effort into the queue. We loved the theming and technology in it. Like...we let people go by us to keep playing with the crabs....lol. Then rode the ride. It just felt like the ride itself was phoned in. No real effort. I know it's geared for a younger audience, but it still felt cheap.

The joke we made for the rest of the day was to go back and do the queue and then just skip the ride.

Captain EO
The Seas with Nemo & Friends
Circle of Life: An Environmental Tale
Swiss Family Treehouse

There's a good number of posts that complain about the condition of Space Mountain. I don't have to complain about that here. d:
