"Billy Magnussen (No Time to Die) has signed on to star alongside Zach Galifianakis and newcomer Maia Kealoha in Disney’s live-action Lilo & Stitch film directed by 2023 Oscar nominee Dean Fleischer Camp (Marcel the Shell With Shoes On), Deadline has learned.

The studio had no comment, and the roles of both Galifianakis and Magnussen are under wraps, though it’s understood that Kealoha will be playing Lilo in the feature bound for Disney+. And while it’s unclear how the sequel’s plot will compare to the original 2022 animated film, that Hawaii-set story charted the friendship between a lonely girl named Lilo and the alien, Stitch, engineered to be a force of destruction.

Chris Kekaniokalani Bright wrote the forthcoming film, from a previous draft by Mike Van Waes. Dan Lin and Jonathan Eirich will produce for Rideback, with Ryan Halprin exec producing for the company."

"Chris Sanders is in final negotiations to voice the character of Stitch in Disney’s live-action Lilo & Stitch, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.

Tia Carrere, who originally voiced Nani in the first film, will also play the newly-created Mrs. Kekoa, while Amy Hill will star as a new character named Tūtū.

Sanders, who wrote and directed the original feature alongside Dean DeBlois, voiced the creature in the 2002 Lilo & Stitch, as well as Lilo & Stitch: The Series (2003-2006). Sanders has been rumored to return as Stitch for years, but in a 2022 interview with SYFY Wire, he said he hadn’t been officially approached by the studio.

Newcomer Maia Kealoha is playing Lilo, while Sydney Elizebeth Agudong is playing Nani. Kahiau Machado was cast as David Kawena last week, but has since been recast with Kaipot Dudoit. During Disney’s vetting process, previous posts in which the actor used racial slurs were uncovered on social media. Machado’s casting was not officially confirmed by Disney.

Zach Galifianakis joined the cast in February as Jumba, with Billy Magnusson as Pleakley and Courtney B. Vance as Cobra Bubbles rounding out the cast."

At least Tia Carrere is in it now. I'm happy.

It would be great if Chris Sanders is involved. No one understands the Lilo & Stitch world better then Chris, HE CREATED IT! I would love to see him in charge of the project and see what he would do with his creation after thinking about it for 20 years.

It might be hard for him to just do Stitch's voice if they start messing with his original story too much.

I guess it's still on...

I didn't realize that it was not on was a thing. I don't really think we are close to the end of the live action remake. If Disney is dumb enough to do Moana 2, then release Moana 1 in live action shortly after. They're in it for the long haul.

I’m not a fan of the live-action remakes; they feel gimmicky to me. However, I love the idea of a Stitch movie done with modern animation. Stitch is one of my daughter’s favorite characters, and I think a new animated film could capture his charm and appeal.
