Try doing a search on Tesla coils. mkt gave an explanation on how they worked not too long ago. I believe it was in the thread about pacemakers at WDW.

That is large scale theatrical strobe lights, and they also use some pyro products which deliver some great flashes of light.

From what I've seen that seems to come from the Dragon's wings. It's pretty simple.

You're going the right direction. We like to call them "Star Strobes". Same kind of effect that is on the Castle. Not necessarily the ones by Diversitronics.

The HES Dataflash, the Diversitronics Superstar Strobs, etc... all will do the same thing. It's more about the strobe rate and the timing with the music and the action that makes it effective as a "lightning effect." (on a side note, i perfer anything by Diversitronics when it comes to strobes, they just make a good quality product -- i am actually using one for a lighting effect in the current show I am designing)

You can't control intensity, rate, and duration of the star strobes I was talking about though. These are the same effect as an eggstrobe, and will strobe at a completely random rate. And the Martin Atomic 3000 is the best by far that I've seen as far as a lightning effect.

i dont think they use tesla coils because if you look close at the lightning you will see that the same light bolt is seen
