Maybe they plan to place refillable drink stations at all quick service locations like some already have

That might be more efficient
Possibly... but there is nothing to gain from making the change now... vs when the construction to make those machines available was done.

Make cups smaller... but allow refills... people could digest.
Make cups smaller... and that's it... would be perceived as a negative with no positives for the customer

There would have to be other motives to do it now

I was just at MK last week. My favorite fountain drink to get is at caseys corner, I always get a large coke there and also the corndog nuggets which normally are served in a cup. I found out once I ordered no large cups, and also the corndog nuggets was served in plate like the fries.. I was hoping it was just for Christmas. My thoughts was maybe Disney didn't want to pay for two sizes of festive cups to be made and only went with small.. Maybe things will return after Christmas?

Since the spring where has there been a change at WDW which has been beneficial to the guest? This is just one more in a series of financially motivated changes which negatively affect the guest experience

Disney now needs to stock only one size of cup this will probably save a couple million per year as now they will only need only 2/3's as much water/syrup/ice and eliminate an item and they will probably raise the price of the drink as well

That is possible

I know our first instinct is they are doing it for financial gain but I would assume they make more selling large drinks at a higher cost if the coke syrup is free and the larger cups are only pennies more. Who knows tho...this is Disney we are taking about. Some big dog probably made a cut to save the company money which then turns around and gives the big dog a huge bonus. Makes perfect sense

I'm hoping this is just for the season (but it doesn't make sense unless it's just they don't have festive large cups).

Getting rid of the "large" upsell usually goes against retail marketing or maybe things have changed since I learned cost accounting in my college days.

Usually you want the larger, more profitable, size. Yes, there are additional costs with having 2 versions, but when viewed at the per cup level, the cost difference to the vendor is usually only a penny or two for the large size. So the 40 cent retail price difference is almost always pure profit to the seller (the overhead costs like machinery and employees are the same regardless of small or large sizes). The first rule of retail is to maximize profit per sale, so always promote an upsell option.

It's possible there were problems getting large holiday cups this year, but knowing the current "Disney" I'm sure they would have no problem selling generic Coke paper cups.

It makes me wonder if they are going to replace their "large" option with an all-you-can-drink option like some other parks. Expect a $10 large option sometime soon?

I suspect that more people are ordering 1 large and sharing with another person as a means of controlling their spend.

It is psychologically more.difficult to share a medium. In the end, top line soda revenue will expect to increase.

I suspect you are correct especially after the price increases and portion cuts that came this spring Disney has now found that people are now becoming unwilling to spend what Disney is asking because of the perceived value is no longer there

I know personally, my husband and I would typically buy one large beverage and share it at a QS meal. Neither of us needs a full drink on our own but obviously, you want something while eating a meal. So the large served that purpose directly. Jokes on them though because instead of buying two burgers and two drinks, I'll just buy one burger, a kid's meal (which comes with a drink) and one small drink. Works out cheaper for me, still plenty of food for me and is a few dollars less than before. (I know I'm likely the exception and many people want more than the kid's portion but it's a full meal by my standards. I can't eat 8 nuggets for example so why pay for them to just throw away?)

I still think it's lame to only offer a small without the ability to get refills. A "small" at Epcot is fine to share since we can top it off on our way out.

This is one of those things that's not a huge deal but it leaves a sour taste in one's mouth. It just feels shady and anti-guest and that's a sad reality in today's Disney.

A likely SKU reduction exercise. One less item (2 if you include cup lids) to order, inventory and store (both at the commissary and the retail point). Upsell opportunities still exist from small to the "new" large, especially if the small cup is significantly small enough (10 to 12 oz) to entice your appetite for a larger portion (20-32 oz). There is a big push in the industry for cup makers to make all cups sizes the same measurement at the opening (the top) so that 1 size lid will fit all.
