I was watching a special on animal kingdom a couple of days ago. It said that the area that the safari takes up is larger than the area of land that the magic kingdom takes up!

Also, it said that they had to train all of the animals to certain sounds and whistles so that each species of animals would know when to come in to sleep.

Yep. That's mainly why they say that all of Magic Kingdom, EPCOT, and Disney-MGM Studios could almost fit snuggly together inside of Animal Kingdom.

Training animals to sounds, by the way, is standard zoo procedure. Every zoo teaches their animals ways to respond to sound - not only to get them into their pens at night, but also to move them around the displays and at feeding time. You will usually see a zookeeper ringing a bell, or beating a drum, or playing a flute or whistle when they feed their animals. They normally feed them close to where the customers can watch - and the sound attracts them toward the front of the display. Similarly, in emergencies, the sound quickly gathers the animals into a safe holding area (i.e. in case of inclement weather, etc). THey think they are going to get fed, and run toward the sound.
