The current Journey into Imagination pavilion structure was actually the original design for the Land pavilion. Kodak liked it, so after the Land took on the structure resembling a Volcano, they used the original Land pavilion exterior as that of Imagination.

Now that is interesting!

Can you imagine what it would have been like if it had stayed like it was supposed to have been? I wonder what Imagination would have been like--certainly not the volcano. Fascinating. . .

I read that pyramids are some symbol of creation and that is why Imagination has 2 pyramids. I read it in Walt Disney's Epcot which I checked out at my local library :animwink:

EXCELLENT book. Perhaps the left and the right sides of the brain? No idea. But you're lucky - I bought the EDITED version for 50 bucks. The extended version of the book is at our library for reference (no taking home) only. :fork: (It has excellent pictures!!)

is this the hardcover book printed in 82? I purchased mine off of EBAY and paid $30 for it! The jacket is pristine and so are the pages! It has fold out paintings, etc. Cool book!

There are 2 editions. One has the text in Times New Roman on the cover - the other has the words EPCOT in the "EPCOT Font" (still seen in Wonders of Life, Spaceship Earth, and the Living Seas, as well as on various exits and park direction signs). The one with ALL Times New Roman has about 1/3 more pictures than the other.

On a "Behind the scenes" tour, a cast member mentioned that the Sea and Land were as planned, but the Imagination pavillion was originally supposed to be "Air" (hence the large amounts of glass looking at the sky).

Hmmm...

you're correct, it does have to do with the right and left side of the brain.

This would give away my city but I go to the Waterloo Public Library. The book was in the travel section. It's a nice 2 floor library with a good selection of books on a diverse amount of subjects. It has a fish tank, chess tables, a puppet theater for kids to perform, videos, and a computer card system.

I bet that they just designed the buildings, and after thy were done made up a whole bunch of stories to go with the design.

I could see how Imagination could somehow represents jewels, which come from the Earth. But pyramids in many cases are used to symbolize imagination.

Yep, The Land was originally going to look (from the front anyway) more like Imagination, but with more pyramids, and more abstract shaped ones (think crystals). Imagination was roughly as it is today (this is `78-9) but with a more diagonal footprint - that is the pyramids would be more offset from eachother, and with an overall more `70s future look - Space Mountain style spires included! And the Imageworks would have a balcony outside the east pyramid!

As for where the respective pavillions would be - Seas and Horizons swapped places, The Land was going where Horizons went, The Seas was going where Imagination is.
BTW - The USA pavillion was going on the opposite side of World Showcase from where it is today, right where the main walkway. And it was going to be a circular concrete building - on stilts. You would have had to walk UNDER the suspended building to enter WS. Quite rightly, it was felt this was too imposing for the host nation. Quite how the American Adventures war wagon would have operated suspended in the air also probably had something to do with it...

As dated as some of those buildings look now, I have to say that for the time they were pretty good looking.

My question is the design of Living Seas. It is so radically different a style than everything else in Future World. Yet it looks like the design had been tought baout even when Epcot first opened before it was built. I wonder why?

Wow I am loosing it. I edited Disney Seas to Living Seas.
