KirkSheppard's Disney/Universal Holiday Celebration Retreat Trip Report LIVE!

Hello! I am currently in my cozy room at the Orlando Vista hotel, listening to fireworks being shot off (though I don't know where . . . maybe Illuminations if its at 9:30 nowadays). My friend Connie is with me again this trip and after we both worked we flew out of CVG at 4:25 without incident and landed early at MCO. Actually, we were very fortunate in that the nice lady at the Delta counter allowed us to change our seats so that we could sit together and we got to sit in the back bulkhead which gave me more legroom and we had a three-seat row to ourselves, which also made things more comfortable.

Since were were in the back of the plane, it took awhile to disembark. Then we stopped in the Universal store and looked at all the cool stuff including the wands, which are pretty neat. We walked down to baggage claim, which was deserted. I thought that was strange but at $25 a bag, who checks their luggage (besides me, of course)? So, I waited and waited and waited. Connie went down to the rental car counter and she also waited and waited and waited.

Finally, the belt started moving and there were like 6 bags out before it stopped again. I decided I better investigate so I walked over to the baggage office where the very nice lady told me that the Cincinnati luggage had been there for awhile and helped me find my bag which was sitting with a nice luggage-sitter. I felt kind of silly for waiting almost 30 minutes but it didn't matter because Connie was still in line for the car.

We got up to the counter at Hertz and the lady couldn't have been more delightful. She upgraded us to a full sized vehicle but we had to walk all the way over to Terminal A. That was fine and after some navigational difficulties we found our way to the nice new Impala. The odometer reading says 6 miles, which I find hard to believe but wow, that's a pretty new car!

Connie is always hilarious when it comes to driving a huge car (she usually drives a little Honda) and getting out of the garage was quite an adventure. I turned the GPS on on my iPhone and we headed to the hotel. We actually were able to take a shorter route because of Mapquest and made our usual stop at WalGreens so I could get my 12 pack of Coke and energy drinks, which I only drink on vacation.

Finally we made it to the hotel and checked in. They are always so nice here; this is my third time staying here and while its not the Ritz-Carlton, it is very nice for the price. The front desk supervisor was able to get us on the same floor and I took the luggage up to the rooms while Connie parked the car. She came up and got her stuff and headed to Downtown Disney while I decided to call it a night.

Big day tomorrow at Universal for the Wizarding World of Harry Potter. Should have LOTS of pictures tomorrow from both that and the Osborne Family Spectacle of Dancing Lights at DHS. Stay tuned!

You must have a way with the ladies to get great service at the airport and rental counter! Can't wait to hear more details on your trip.

Just a way with people in general. Connie is a psychologist and I'm a professional clinical counselor so . . . :)

Thanks for reading. You can also follow the trip on twitter at my username kirksheppard.

Day Two: Universal Studios Islands of Adventure and the Disney Hollywood Studios

We were up at 'em really early today because I wanted to be one of the first people through the gates into Islands of Adventure. It was so cold. Like coat, hat, and glove wearing weather.

The car windshield was frosted over:

We arrived at the parking garage at about 7:45, which was too early but we were able to park about 6 cars down in the first row of parking in the garage. We walked briskly through Citywalk just trying to stay warm until we got the Will Call kiosk to print out our tickets. Neither of us brought our confirmation number but luckily it let you print out your ticket based on your phone number. I really thought the credit card that I purchased the ticket with was all I needed. Oh well, it all worked out. We then walked over to the gate as we watched all the resort guests being let in. Some of them were in shorts and t-shirts while we shivered . . .and we're from Ohio! I guess mind over matter was working for them or something.

I'm very cold!

Qadir, our friendly gate keeper, was so happy and friendly it made our morning. But when the gates opened, he was all business. In fact, it is quite a difficult process to get into the park as their biometric or fingerprinting computer must access the FBI database or something. It was so slow.

Regardless, we finally got into the park and headed through Suess Landing over to the entrance to Hogsmeade. When Connie first saw the castle off into the distance she legitimately gasped. It was breathtaking. We saw the lockers right next to the Hogwarts Express and were excited so we put our stuff in them, not realizing there was one at the entrance to the castle.

We walked past Ollivander's and saw that the line was already kind of long. We decided to do this first as was our original plan, though we'd been wavering on not riding the Forbidden Journey first. We only had to wait through one show before being allowed into the wand shop show. It was very good, as the wand keeper was very into his role and was very good with the two little girls he selected to be his shoppers. I loved the effect when the wands were correct. We didn't stay in the shop and decided to come back later to buy Connie's wands and headed over towards Hogwarts Castle.

I tried the test seat and it wasn't even close but I thought maybe it was because I was wearing my coat - AND I was hopeful that the modified seating rendered the seat outside useless. We walked through the very detailed que line and I was very impressed with all the little details, including the Dumbledore hologram and the holograms of the kids along with the snow in the Defense Against the Dark Arts classroom. The sorting hat animatronic was pretty amazing, and I wished I'd gotten a picture of it but my camera was in my locker.

We walked right on to the ride but as I sat down and the young lady tried to secure my overhead restraint, she gave it one good shove and told me I wasn't going to be able to ride. She was very nice and professional about it. I was a little disappointed but I think my height had as much to do with it as my weight. At 6'4 and 330 I'm just big all over so its not unusual for me not to fit comfortably on many rides, especially at my home park (Kings Island).

I went outside and sat on a bench and waited for Connie to ride and get her review.

She said that the dragon blew smoke, which fogged her glasses and so she missed part of the ride. Plus the spiders spraying "venom" got her right in the face. She said that the ride itself whips around pretty good and she wasn't sure I could have handled it anyway with my motion sickness issues. Maybe next year when I've lost some weight I'll be able to squeeze on and find out for myself.

We went and got our stuff out of our lockers and then started taking pictures all up and down the street.

It was starting to get crowded and those shops sure are small . . . Plus, I was hungry. More to come in the next post!

Day Two Continued . . .

So, we decided to eat at Three Broomsticks. I got the half chicken platter, which came with an ear of corn and roasted potatoes. Connie had the Fish and Chips. She said it was good. Mine was a little skimpy on chicken meat and the potatoes were cold. I did enjoy the ear of corn, though. But mostly we got Butterbeer!

It had a nice creamy sweet tasting froth on top and underneath it was basically a cream soda. I thought the froth was amazing; the drink underneath not so much. After we ate, we continued down the path of shops taking more pictures and exploring things like the Owlery.

Connie wanted to go back into Filch's Emporium and do some more shopping (a common theme of this trip) and so I waited on a bench outside while she did that. It was just way too crowded in there for me. I was watching folks ride the Flight of the Hippogriff across the way from me and it looked like a good time.

After Connie spent a bazillion dollars in the shop, we headed back down through Diagon Alley and walked up on the visiting students from the other schools at Hogwarts for the Tri-Wizard Tournament. I'm not sure what all their little appearance entails but when we walked up they were standing there for pictures.

After they were done, we got to see the Hogwarts Choir, along with backup frogs!

We watched most of their set and then headed out of Hogsmeade back into Seuss Landing towards the exit. We took some pictures like this one:

***TRIBUTE TO THE GOOD DR. SEUSS***
We rode Cat in the Hat, which had no wait.
And then we walked towards the exit gate.
***TRIBUTE OVER***

I was ready for a nap as I did not get much sleep the night before. So we headed back to the hotel.

More to come . . .

Sorry I abandoned this thread . . . just got busy and never got back to it. We had a great rest of the trip including another day at Universal where I split off from Connie and our friends Nicole, Jeff, and their baby Gregory to do some of my own things like Beetlejuice, Mummy, MiB, Jaws, ET, and see The Blues Brothers . . .

Connie and I really loved the two Christmas parties as they weren't very crowded and we were able to see the parades and fireworks without much trouble. Epcot was nice, though I fell asleep during Captain EO...

Anyway, it was fun. I'm actually on a plane now back for my solo birthday trip. This is the third time I've done this and I love it. So, go find that thread and hopefully I'll update it appropriately this time! :)
