Well a storyline would be nice but no cartoons

Personally, on a ride like KS, it's all about getting to see the animals. When it did have a storyline, I never paid much attention to it because I was just looking for what was coming up next. If anything, the storyline was kind of an annoying distraction. I prefer to just listen to the guide and hear the interesting facts about the animals we're currently looking at and then move on.

Of course you wouldn't HAVE to add characters. Just let the lions roam the savannah freely and have the drivers explain the circle of life to terrified children as "Simba" is devouring "Pumba".

I'm talking about keeping the actual safari the same. Maybe changing up the queue, how the drivers talk to the guests, decorations that don't affect the wildlife and such.

I see where you are going with that but I think the whole crux of the safari is that you are not at Disney (or even in Florida). That's why they go to such great lengths to distance you from the park in the immersive (and long) queue. Most other queues loop back on themselves and you can always see the building you are going into from the entrance or the see the park from the queue/loading area but the one for KSR is different. It starts out being visible from the main part of the park and continues drawing you further into Harambe and away from DAK. The last part is only visible to the people walking down Pangani which is also an immersive experience that keeps the theming and story going instead of breaking it up by having EE or the Tree of Life visible from the queue. Everything you see reinforces Harambe and not DAK.

EDIT: Bear in mind, I have a pretty strong emotional connection to KSR as I drove the safaris for a long time.
