I don't know if this bothers anyone, but do you ever find it offensive when people call Disney "a bunch of kiddie parks"?
Its always just a little irksome for me.

The problem with people is that we have been socialized to accept certain ideas as being too young or old for us, the same way the color blue is associated with boys and pink being associated with girls. Some people think clearly that Disney products are purely kiddie fare, when there is much evidence to the contrary.

I work at a restaurant where most of the employees are my age (around 21) and we all believe that Lilo and Stitch was a great movie. I hang out with guys who love the theme parks. And not just Space Mountain.

I think if you can appreciate to have a little fun, then you can appreciate Disney. Some people just don't get it.

Your thoughts?

These are the die hard coaster enthusiasts that like parks purely for the coasters. I on the other hand, in addition to loving coasters, like every ride, particularly dark rides. So, I like Disney for everything that is Disney.

As a matter of fact that hardly happens to me, but it does happen. However, my entire family practically loves Disney, so me and my cousin are always finding out new things. :)

yeah, it annoys me, but the people who say it are the people who have most likely never been there, or who don't like/appreciate DisneyWorld, so I don't bother with the people that go out of their way to say that. And if it comes up in conversation, oh well. I'm not gonna like, yell at someone who doesn't think the same thing as me...I just let it go. Big deal, ya know?

I know a lot of people who judge people by what they're in to...Music, clothes, whatever. A couple friends/people I know are like that...and if they don't like me because of that, then those are the people I don't pay as much attention to as my other friends. Thankfully, though, a lot of my best friends have been to, and like DisneyWorld, soo...that's pretty cool, hehe

:D

Some people shouldn't be allowed to have opinions...

And what "kiddie" understands (or appreciates) the majority of the stuff at Epcot? If anything, it's the most adult of the parks.

My brothers actually liked it, which was a huge suprise for me. sure they spent most of their time at DisneyQuest, but they still liked it. I even found out that one of them was at www.disneyworld.com, looking up more stuff on the parks. :sohappy:

It aggitates me when people catagorize things like that. Most of the time it's just from a passing glance. Half the things that intrest me end up catagorized as "kiddie" stuff. Disney, Anime, Fantasy, most of it is written off as for children, and those who like it said to be immature. Oh well. Back to my little fantasy world. :)

this may be just my opinion, but any theme park that has an entire area devoted solely to kids, just because they don't have enough for an entire family to enjoy, deserves to be called a kiddie park.

I don't even recognize the current incarnation of MK's toontown as part of MK. I like the DL and Tokyo Toontowns because they are real lands designed for families... but Mickey's Toontown Fair is a joke.

The same applies for Kidcot.. but I'll let it slide, since it's just small activities here and there... not an entire area. It's good for families to get a break once in a while, while the kids have something to do.. unlike toontown, which a parent might want a break, they are forcibly immersed in the "kiddie-park" environment while the kids go play around on a slide which is a themed version of the same slide at a local playgorund. At least at Kidcot, the kids get something to do, and the parents get to relax.

MGM is a good family park.. there's something for everyone there.

As for AK... ehh.. get back to me in 5 years... there's not much for ANYONE to do there that would take more than a day

I really enjoy all of your comments. I never thought I would get a huge response to this.

I also pay no attention to these people, because its such a trivial thing to get into a discussion with, and in the end I believe what I want to believe.

I went to WDW's Magic Kingdom with a friend, and we had a ball, but when he went to Disneyland (with half its attractions closed for rehab like Splash Mt.), he called it a kiddie park for some reason. [Maybe he was referring to Toontown, or because Tommorrowland had no attrations except "Honey I shrunk" and Space Mt.] And he's the type to enjoy the most simplest of pleasures. He was basically the catalyst for this thread.

He wasn't any happier when he to California Adventure. He told me that if it wasn't for the fact that he was in the army and he could get in for free, it wasn't worth it. I agree with him there (with the California Adventure park).

it does bother me to an extent....but i figure Disney doesn't need their money to stay afloat, so why bother with them? besides, i'd rather it be 'our little secret' ('our' as in we Disney fans) if they wanna call it a bunch of 'kiddie' parks and not even give it a chance, then fine by me....they're just missing out on some of the greatest fun they'll ever have! their loss...not mine. i've got plenty of other friends who love Disney to Disney chat with! as long as they (the 'Disney is for kids' people) NEVER diss Walt in front of me, then i'll keep my cool.

While the Disney theme parks aren't entirely considered "Kiddie" when you visit them, the Disney name alone to some people = something that is entertaining for kids. Face it people, Disney's bread and butter is children. They adore the brand name. To parents, its the like the offical goodhousekeeping seal. But when you get to a certain age (the "too cool" age is getting lower with every generation), those things like Mickey and Pooh will be looked at as "kiddie", thus anything previously adored by these individuals will seem "not cool" or "adult" when the tween years come by. Heck, I've been through that stage. I was a avid Disney Afternoon fan when I was 10 to writing manfesto's on newsgroups on how Disney is "evil" at 17 (I kid you not I did this in 1998).

Eventually, a trip to WDW would change that...a lot.

I can't change the opinions of those who shun WDW as a "kiddie" experience, but I feel that the American society is too concerned about an average person's interests "going out of the box". Example is our fixation on Disney, an interest in Animation beyond the age of 12 or anything that is considered inappropiate for our age. I find this crap conforming and pro-establishment.

So what if my college-age peers would rather go to IOA and ride the "big boy" roller coasters all the live long day. They'll learn one day. One day, they'll have kids and will at least appreciate the Disney magic.

Well it does bother me a little and another thing is that when people call EPCOT stupid, boring, and lame because it has hardly any thrill rides and its educational. I pitty those people who cant seem to enjoy good things like EPCOT just cause its not thrill central. They cant enjoy its beauty and purpose and archetecture. As for the rides i enjoy it not having that many thrills.Thats why i got so upset when i found out that they were replacing Horizons with a thrill ride.I enjoy slow moving dark rides. Now TT i enjoyed and it is one of my favorites but thats enough thrill rides for EPCOT,thats what i atleast think. I remeber when we were voting where to go on a feild trip at my school.I knew EPCOT wouldnt have a chance but i voted for it anyways, everyone called me stupid but i was happy with my choice.Tho IOA won we didnt go because we didnt raise enough money which i was happy with because i just cant take down thrill rides that well. *off topic* but another example of kiddie things stupidness is how everyone thinks Gamecube is a kiddie console because it doesnt have enough blood and gore.If you ask me those people miss out on alot of good games.

I never really classified Disney being a "kiddie-park" so whoever thought that should really re-consider....reconsidering :)
