Karma for Kodak?

The comments about today's digital cameras and smartphones not competing with DSLRs are almost an exact copy of statements made about early digital cameras versus film. Many said that digital would never create sufficient quality to compete with film. Hmm, ask Kodak about film.

Completely different.
Just like the argument that Medium Format Digital Cameras will replace Large Format ones, its not going to happen in our lifetime. The optics of a smart phone -vs- the optics of a DSLR with a prime lens are not even remotely close, nor will they be. I was shooting when we use to budget jobs by how many pieces of 8x10 film we would use so I lived and understand that arena all to well. Digital -vs- Film was and is a different animal, and honestly film is still superior to digital in a number of ways, digital is easier to use and provides instant satisfaction, but film still captures light and reacts in a way that Digital has not been able to duplicate perfectly, I know a lot of pros who still love their Hasselblad and Contax 4x5's and their Cambo 8x10's and have incredible shots images from them (I still have my Cambo 8x10). DSLR's will become smaller and more compact, and as chips get smaller the size of the files will get bigger from your iphone, but its physically impossible fort the optics of a smart phone to compete with the optics of a Zeiss Prime Lens. Bigger glass + Bigger Chips equals better files.

90% of the people I know think their iphone pictures are amazing....

quality is for those with a refined eye

its like an 8 dollar boxed wine versus an Opus One... both wines, but worlds apart

So sad. Kodak is an iconic American company. Times change, but it is sad watching it die a slow death. I hope that Kodak can turn themselves around.

I'm hoping that Disney doesn't lose the sponsorship of all the shows and displays that it does. It does seem to be busy when I am in there, I've used it for years to get film, photos and also cameras. I have also used it for memory chips and other digital accessories, including cameras, and straps. Hopefully it will still stay there. I think that chapter 11 which is what Kodak is going under is reorganization.. so hopefully they can turn it around.

Never ever say anything is impossible. These are the same arguments used with so many technologies I've watched emerge I over 60 years. And they are always wrong. The arguments always make so much sense, like the one's you lay out here, until technology improves and proves them wrong.
