Welcome back after 10 years! A lot has changed! Both in the real world and Disney World.
Scooters are everywhere, not just theme parks. You probably also noticed a lot of strollers being used for carrying purchases and food while the poor tykes have to run behind them. If Disney only had moving sidewalks...

If only Disney didn't rent strollers...

Consider over 70% of American adults are overweight and 35% are obese. I seriously doubt many of these people can make it all day walking around WDW without passing out or having a stroke, hence all the scooters. It's really sad that so many people in this country don't have the discipline to eat healthier and exercise more.

BTW i've been to all the Disney Parks around the world and I can't remember seeing any scooters at any of the parks except the American parks. There's really nothing you or I can do about other people's habits so I guess the only thing I can do is feel sorry for them that they ride around in a scooter and have to deal with getting stared at and criticized.

For some people it isn't a matter of "not having the discipline to eat healthier and exercise more." Some people have a hard time moving and are on medications and have medical conditions that caused them to be overweight in the first place. They aren't simply "lazy" as many want to blindly say.

Seriously don't give me that crap. Yes that is true for some, hence why I said "so many" instead of all people. And make no mistake its definitely lifestyle for most people, hence why you see so many people riding scooters in America and rarely ever see it in most countries. EVERY expert on the subject agrees with that.

The excuses in this country are pathetic. I hear them all the time: "I work in an office and can't get exercise." What a bunch of BS that is: I work in an office where not much physical activity gets done and most people are overweight. Most people that work around me get 3,000 or so steps a day because they sit at their desk all day and make no effort. I walk 15,000 steps a day, eat healthy, and I am in shape under the same circumstances all of my co workers are in. How difficult is it to park in the back of the lot and walk further, take the stairs instead of using elevators, walk around the block, eat an apple instead of a doughnut, don't drink soda, etc. All of these are easy things to do.

I'm not giving you any crap. I just explained that for some people it's not a matter of being able to exercise with more effort and diet. I actually probably eat even better than most people yet have issues due to meds and my health conditions (do I ride around on scooter places and not make effort even though I probably could if I wanted to in order to not have excruciating pain from my medical conditions that some are genes and some are from being an elite athlete for 25 years? NO). I'm not a candidate for my 600 lb life but I am a bit overweight not by choice or my doing or for lack of effort.

I understand that some folks need to use a scooter for many different reasons but this is a problem. On our last visit my son was struck by a scooter and had a swollen ankle for the rest of our trip. I watched as a man is a scooter, that thought he was set in a forward direction, hit the gas and backed into a large group at full speed. I had to help the castmember at a walk up food counter after a woman ran into her counter and knocked her cash register into the next line. Things are getting dangerous with these things and I dont know how it can be fixed.

I don't think it can be. Normally this type of thing would be self regulating...Can't walk around the parks? Then you simply didn't go to the parks. Now, if you can't walk around the parks, you get a scooter. Unless Disney restricts scooter use, which there is literally no chance of, this will continue. The parks weren't designed to accommodate as many vehicles(strollers, scooters, wheelchairs) as they are currently subjected to though, and it does negatively impact the experience for many. What can be done? Nothing. What should be done? Mileage may vary,

(In before the lock)

(MY opinion) I would venture to guess that some of the people in the scooters may not need them but that is just a guess. My own mother uses one when she goes places that would require a lot of walking because her hips get to hurting her pretty bad after a short while of walking. And she is not overweight nor is she disabled. However, to enjoy the same things everyone else does she sometimes requires an ECV. That said, she knows that they can be a pain and tries to not use one unless absolutely necessary and sometimes she just skips the event/trip altogether if she feels it would be an inconvenience to others. She is planning on going to Disney with us soon and will use one while there, but she is more like me in that she vehemently watches out for other people to make sure that she is not infringing on their mobility, freedom of movement, or walking space. She is not rude with her scooter and makes sure she is courteous to others while using it. I have no problem with people using these things. At all. If they need it then fine, use it. My problem is with those that think they can just barge, ram, and run over others while they are in the thing. Some a-hole in one ran over my foot while going around a corner on the ferry dock because he felt that I was cutting in front of him. He did this intentionally and told me that I was cutting. Really?!? In a path that wide with people walking 5 and 6 wide?? I nearly took the keys out of the thing an chucked them in the water. THESE are the people I cannot stand on the ECV's.
