Jungle Cruise Reaction

My boat was quiet and since I had an idea of what most of the jokes would be (also it was evening and I was just tired and out of it) so I was only quietly chuckling at them. There was a pile up of boats toward the end so we were getting every joke in the Jungle Cruise handbook too. Nothing. Finally as we were getting off this old woman took our skipper's hand and said, "You are a very funny young lady, thank you." It was the sweetest thing ever.

especially considering the skipper was a guy.

The Jungle cruise is a joy to ride! English is not my mother's first language, and although she understands and speaks it, I know that some of the skipper's puns fly right past her. This does not mean she enjoys it any less however!
It makes me very happy when everyone goes along with the jokes, because that makes it easier on the skipper and more fun for the crowd!

I was just listening to Subsonic Radio (if you haven't discovered this yet it's fantastic) and a recording of a Jungle Cruise run came on. I found myself cracking up to all the Skipper's wry puns, but once I paid closer attention I realized that there was very little laughter coming from the passengers. Come to think of it, I feel like every time I go on Jungle Cruise I'm the only one ever laughing! Do you guys have the same experience? Is it because people just aren't paying attention? Do people not get it? Are people just sort of uncomfortable?
Most of them don't know english.

We had a skipper during my last trip in July who was absolutely hysterical. It was later in the evening during EMH's. The boat wasn't very full, maybe 10 of us. She was making references to "Big Bang Theory" and other popular shows on TV during her spiel and it added life to what can sometimes be a pretty boring attraction depending on the skipper. She was great.

my brother thinks that the skippers make the tongue-in-cheek jokes because the attraction is now dated and cheesy...he thought it was hilarious that they were making fun of the ride.

So yes, the humor seems to be lost on some people.

Aren't the majority of people who visit WDW from the US and the UK?

Anyway....
Speaking of non-English tourists, I had a similar experience in one of my Keys to the Kingdom tours. When we were about to board our private Jungle Cruise boat, some Europeans decided that they should also board. Our tour guide didn't even notice until the end. They could not communicate with both our guide or the skipper. They were just taking pictures and sitting quietly. It was beyond awkward.

Perhaps I am just misremembering, but back in the day, the skippers used to be able to go off script more with their own jokes. Now I believe they are supposed to stick to the script. I do agree that a lot of the ride experience does depend on how "into it" your skipper is and how receptive the guests are. I think many people expect to be bombarded constantly with special effects and fast-paced jokes (think children's movies that contain more jokes for the adults than the kids). The old- fashioned humor of the JC is lost on lost on many people today.

Best trip on the Jungle Cruise was in Disneyland. Oddly, the majority of the passengers were wearing red shirts. ;) The Skipper was laughing as hard as the passengers by the end of it.

It's based on the 1951 movie, "The African Queen"

I think what he's referring to his the movie Disney wanted to make about the ride, similar to the Haunted Mansion movie.
This Jungle Cruise movie was supposed to star Tim Allen and Tom Hanks.
Thankfully, it hasn't been made. Yet.

Been going to WDW since 1977 and sadly, I have never been on the Jungle Cruise. Way back in the day, I guess we couldn't afford enough tickets (what was the JC anyway? C? D?) all these years later, I guess I foolishly just avoid it as I know what it's supposed to be. However, it's on my bucket list for this December and I promise to LMAO at every cornball silly pun tossed out by the skipper.

It was an 'E' ticket. So was the 'Tiki Room' in Adventureland :)
