The Horror!

Pirates was amazing.

The Haunted Mansion was...uh, silly.

I bypassed Country Bears. That was a joke.

I'm curious to see if anything comes of this one. I'm definately not against it. As long as it's not a direct-to-video sequel, I'm good. I think it's possible to make any ride an inspiration for a good movie, as long as the moviemakers are talented enough.

What I want to know is how to do a family version of Heart of Darkness? :veryconfu My interest is sparked.

Amazing book, by the way.

Oh no. After :hurl: Pirates I refused to see another. What a shame.
Wow I thought Pirates was the best of them all. Haunted Man. was good but not that good. Country Bears was soo stupid I feel a sleep. I guess that if they do a Jungle C. Movie it can only get worst.

I have nothing really against movies based on attractions. I loved Pirates and actually thought Haunted Mansion was pretty good (never saw Country Bears - didn't want to admit that Disney would actually make such a movie). But why would they want to base a disney movie (even loosely) on Heart of Darkness? It is an excellent book but it has some very mature themes that would not be suitable for families. Even if it was based only loosely on the book it just doesn't make sense to me - why bother with the tie in at all?- it seems like they would be piggy backing on the popularity of something previously done without giving it the credit it deserves. Ugh - as an English major this is one of my biggest pet peeves.

Pirates was a great movie, Depp was perfect for the part, the story was well done with special effects. HM could have been much better, I think that Eddie Murphy not funny enough and I was expecting more from him. The graveyard scene was too short, I wanted to see more things from the ride in the movie. Madam Leota was great.

Country Bears was not bad, it was really a kids movie, not a kids & adult movie like so many of the other disney videos and I think that's were it lost out.

I perdict that this movie is going to be really bad. Pirates was a good entertaining movie. Haunted Mansion really sucked in my opinion, I didn't find Eddie Murphy really funny at all in it. I didn't see Country Bears, but heard it was awful. Disney is really grasping at straws in trying to turn attractions into feature films. They scored with Pirates which is fine and I don't mind the upcoming sequels if they put a lot of effort to make them as entertaining as the first one. How about some original ideas? Stop trying to make movies out of attractions!

I know people get upset about turning rides into movies, but from a business sense, it's an excellent idea. The movie generates interest in the ride again, which drives attendance to some degree (especially for the locals). Also, merchandise sales increase. For those who still don't like it ;) just think of it this way . . . at the very least the movie will generate renewed interest in the ride, which means the ride (usually a classic favorite) will survive. CoP movie, anyone haha?

Interesting how nobody has mentioned the Steve Guttenberg Tower of Terror movie yet...anyway...

How in blue hell are they going to pull off a "children's version" of Heart of Darkness. That's like saying they're going to do a "children's version" of Macbeth. It's not even close to being a children's story.

P.S. Does anybody else cringe when Disney starts making movies that are based on attractions that were based on movies? Are they so out of ideas?

I don't know what's worse... making these "attraction" movies for spare cash or tacking on the sequels and prequels to their existing movies (ex. Lion King, Aladdin, etc.). Although Pirates of the Caribbean scraped by and was a really good movie, I have doubts for the next two. It's just overkill to me.

This to me seems like a disaster, because the ride itself has no storyline (neither do Pirates or the Mansion, but at least they had the potential to make great storylines). So, I think the fact that a movie would be based on this ride would turn out to be another Country Bears, a piece of real cinematic crap.

Also, fusing a vague African Queen-Jungle Cruise storyline with Conrad's Heart of Darkness just reeks of bad taste. Heart of Darkness is very archaic, and takes place in another era which would be very hard to translate into today's world, especially in a family movie. Themes of racism, imperialism, social Darwinism, and madness do not make for a good family film, and it would also to be an insult to sanitize this material, when it is trying to make a point about both the madness of European imperialism and the madness of the interior of the human mind. Apocalypse Now has been the only film bold enough to tackle that material, albeit in another time and place, and even that very intense film left out much of the racial bigotry present in the original book. Think of a highly sanitized version of Apocalypse Now!. It would be pretty bad.

I don't mind if they make a movie about the Jungle Cruise, but I just feel they should come up with another storyline rather than potentially ruin a literary masterpiece that many kids will read later in their lives with a crappy movie.

That said, bring on Pirates II and III. :D
 
whoa...a movie based on a ride that was based on another movie (the African Queen)But i'll prob. go see it...especially if they tie in the bathing elephants and what not....

(*Trivia*: When riding the ride, check out the gorillas w/ the gun, then go watch Tarzan. Take a close look at the rock formation w/ the lions, then go watch Lion King. ;) )

Ah yes, a family-friendly Heart of Darkness with bathing elephants. Makes me just want to sprint to the multplex. :rolleyes:

Pirates was AWESOME and I can't wait to see the sequels.
Haunted Mansion was pretty funny. Could have been better, but I was satisfied.
My family only lasted through the first five minutes of Country Bears. That was terrible. (They're COUNTRY bears, not ROCK bears!)
Saw Tower of Terror when it was first on Wonderful World of Disney (I think). Not bad, but I had a little trouble understanding it then.
Saw African Queen recently; thought it was kinda funny but really nothing like the ride. On it's own I wouldn't even match it with the ride. The Jungle Cruise is really meant to follow Walt Disney's True Life Adventures and doesn't even match THAT.
A Jungle Cruise movie, if done right, would be HILARIOUS.

I don't know who got the Heart of Darkness idea, because by the sound of things (I've never even heard of it before this thread) it has nothing in common with the Jungle Cruise.
I'm also surprised that nobody mentioned the rumored Monty Python parody Mr. Toad's Wild Ride. I can't remember where I heard it, and don't even know if the idea still exists.
And finally, since they're a couple of my favorite rides, Big Thunder Mountain Railroad and Space Mountain would make AWESOME movies. And while you're at it, Mission: SPACE could work too. And maybe Stitch's Great Escape....

The whole making rides out of theme park rides is silly. Especially when they have to think up some inane story line that really has nothing to do with the ride except get people excited who know and love the ride to pay their 7-10 bucks to see a really bad movie like Haunted Mansion or Country Bears. There is no way a Jungle Cruise movie could be better than The African Queen which is a classic film. I rather see that movie 100 times than pay to see a bad Jungle Cruise movie once.
