July 2011 Disneymoon (with wedding photos)

Hi all! I just got back from my honeymoon (July 10-17 at WDW and 17-24 on the Carnival Legend), and I'm realizing that I didn't take nearly enough photos to make a trip report that anyone would care to read, but I made a few observations and I figured I'd throw them together and see if anyone has some thoughts on the stuff I noticed. The trip was bittersweet in a way, as I'm now sitting in my new apartment in Orlando, so it was likely the last time I'd do an all-out, week+ long WDW vacation.

Pre-trip report here.

First, I'll start with a few wedding photos, as a few people had requested to see some when I wrote the pre-trip report.

Okay, enough of that. The morning after our wedding in South Bend, IN, Sarah (DW) and I rented a car and drove to Chicago for a 6:00 PM flight from Midway to Orlando. We checked a bag, which we rarely do, and it weighed 67 pounds, so we spent about half an hour at one of the scales at the airline counter trying to shuffle our stuff around into the carry-on bags. We got it down to 49 pounds, but it resulted in some permanent damage to one of our carry-on bags. When we landed in Orlando, we took DME for the first time to Old Key West.

We were absolutely thrilled with OKW for the duration of our trip. Bell services, the front desk, and the staff at the store were all fantastic. Our only complaint is that Olivia's is a bit pricey for what you get, but the prime rib was quite good. We had never stayed in a DVC unit before, and our one bedroom villa was enormous. I might even go so far as to say it was too large for just a couple, but it only had one bed so it might have been too small for families with more than one child (who would sleep on the pull-out). It also kind of sucked not having full housekeeping services, but we weren't too messy. Just would have been nice to have the bed made every day.

As a side note, tons of people have been speculating that resort-specific merchandise was on the way out, but the OKW gift shop had at least three different styles of resort shirts for men and women, in addition to trading pins, lanyards, mugs, glasses, etc.

We had dinner on the first night at Paradiso 37. DW got the ribs and I got some kind of sampler plate with kabobs and other meats. Both were very good but the portions were a bit small. The Tres Leches for desert was excellent, and their drink special that night was amazing (a margarita with a sangria base).

Monday was our first day of park going, and we were there at opening every day. We did Future World first, armed with our "Bride" and "Groom" t-shirts and Mickey ears. Sarah's was custom-ordered from Disneystore.com and had her name in glitter script beneath the veil, but Disney didn't make any top hats that fit me, so I had to order a legitimate felt top hat and glue on the ears.

In Future World, we did Sum of All Thrills for the first time and really enjoyed it. While it was a fun experience, it has a painfully low capacity and I don't think I'd wait any more than 10 or 15 minutes to do it again in the future.

We also did the Behind the Seeds tour at the Land pavilion, which was one of the highlights of the trip. It was very inexpensive, and basically boiled down to a highly detailed, behind-the-scenes version of the Living with the Land ride. I highly recommend it to anyone who really appreciates that Epcot a place where you can genuinely learn a thing or two.

We also got our first honeymoon "pixie dust," as the woman in the fastpass line for Soarin' handed us our fastpasses back after we used them. We didn't end up riding again, but kept the fastpasses as a souvenir. We left Epcot around 4:00 after having been through Future World pretty thoroughly to go back to the room for a nap. We came back to Epcot for dinner and IllumiNations at Rose and Crown at 7:30. The Fish and Chips were delicious as always, and we tried the "mushy peas" at the suggestion of our waitress, and they were probably the best peas I've ever had. (Yes, they were exactly what they sound like.) The wait staff sang a song to us in celebration of our honeymoon, which was a great touch.

On Tuesday morning, we were in the front of the line at the rope drop for Hollywood Studios. We went straight for Toy Story to get fastpasses, and the place was a mob within seconds. The day was a pretty typical DHS day, as we rode RnRC twice and ToT four times. We skipped Indiana Jones and LMA at my wife's insistence. We blew of the 30-minute wait at the Backlot Tour, and when we went to Beauty and the Beast for the last show of the day, it was standing room only so we missed that too. I still think that American Idol is one of the most underrated attractions at WDW. I'm not a particular fan of the TV show, but I love to see the people get up there and sing in front of everybody, especially during the Finale show.

We booked the Fantasmic! dinner package at Mama Melrose's, and I hadn't realized that you had to order appetizers and desert, so we left with a lot of food on our plates. The tomato and mozzarella appetizer was very good, but the steak entree was pretty bad so we didn't finish it. Our waiter was fantastic though, as he hunted down some "Just Married" buttons, which my DW was very disappointed to hear had been discontinued and replaced with "Happily Ever After..." buttons, which is what we had been given when we inquired at OKW.

DHS was the only bad experience we had with the Brazilian tour groups. I had never been in the summer, so this was a new phenomenon to me, but they were generally well behaved. We actually had a group of them sing some sort of chant for us when they saw our bride and groom hats, which my wife loved. While we noticed the groups all week long and they certainly caused their fair share of road blocks, the only problem we had with rudeness, cutting lines, pushing, and conveniently choosing when to understand English was in the Fastpass line for RnRC. After getting cut by several of them, me and another guy adopted the approach of physically putting up our arms from wall-to-wall to keep them from going by. The cast member loading the ride vehicles apologized for their rudeness, so it's nice to know that the CM's notice (and hate) it too.

Fantasmic is still my favorite show at WDW and it was great as always. I was thrilled to see Steamboat Willie driving the ferry boat during the Finale. I haven't seen Fantasmic in years due to bad luck on my previous DHS days, but in the past, I believe it was Donald that drove the ferry, but maybe someone knows how long the Willie costume has been in the show. I'd love to see a black-and-white Steamboat Willie meet-and-greet somewhere in the parks (maybe near One Man's Dream).

Wednesday was my birthday and we decided to take a day off from the parks due to our ADR schedule. We did Chef Mickey's in the morning, and it was way more expensive than I expected. We had fun and got all of our pictures, but I couldn't imagine paying almost $40pp for a family of four for such mediocre food. After Chef Mickey's we went to DTD for shopping and general wandering around. We saw Cars 2 on the West Side. While it is certainly the weakest Pixar film to date, we both enjoyed it just the same. We also walked across the street to WDW Casting so I could get my fingerprints taken for my new job.

Dinner that night was at the California Grill. It was my first signature dining experience at WDW, and the food was absolutely fantastic. I had the scallops and my DW got the chicken and both were great. The BBQ flatbread appetizer was also delicious, and even something as simple as the bread and butter with sea salt was a nice touch. The view of Wishes from the roof of the Contemporary can't be beat either. I did have two complaints about the restaurant though. First, peopled walked in looking like slobs. There is a dress code for the restaurant posted online and at the check-in desk, but it was not enforced whatsoever. There were plenty of people walking around in t-shirts, sneakers, and basketball shorts. My wife was wearing a nice dress and I was wearing dress pants and an oxford, and I expected to be eating in a restaurant of people similarly attired. The second complaint is that the beer selection absolutely sucks. I'm not much of a wine drinker, and when Sierra Nevada is your only option above Bud Light at a restaurant of that caliber, you're doing something very wrong.

Thursday morning we were back at the parks and this time it was DAK. They dropped the rope early that morning but there were really no crowds. We rode Kilimanjaro Safari three times and E:E five times throughout the day, in addition to doing all the trails, etc. I don't care what anyone says, E:E is an awesome ride with or without a functional yeti. I also really enjoyed Festival of the Lion King. The parade floats are kinds of cheesy but the variety performers at center stage are akin to a poor man's Cirque du Soleil. We had dinner that night at Boma, which I loved but my DW wasn't particularly thrilled with. We had eaten at Sanaa a few months ago, and we actually prefer their selection to what was offered at Boma, and you save a few bucks by choosing plated entrees over all-you-can-eat. The deserts at Boma's buffet were a series of bite-sized treats and they were all delicious, but the "special" plate of deserts they brought us for our honeymoon celebration were all disgusting.

On Friday we finally made it to the Magic Kingdom. I always like to save the MK for last because it can burn you out if you do it too early in the week.

We were there at open again and, after grabbing a fastpass for Splash, were on the first train on Big Thunder. The day was a pretty "typical" MK day until lunch at 3:00 at Whispering Canyon. I had been for dinner before and really enjoyed it but being there in the mid-afternoon was awful. The restaurant was virtually empty, so the raucous atmosphere that makes the place so fun was completely lost. We went back to OKW for a loooong nap because that night we were back at the Magic Kingdom until...

281678_10150255557908558_592043557_7801663_2418586_n.jpg

The next day we tried to have fun at World Showcase, but we were absolutely exhausted. We rode Maelstrom, grabbed a brat and a beer, and made an obligatory pass through all the shops, but we cancelled our reservation at Les Chefs and went back to OKW to pass out from exhaustion. We grabbed dinner at Olivia's and then hopped the ferry to the West Side for Cirque. It was the first time either of us had seen a Cirque show and we were both left without words to describe how fantastic it was. It was really a perfect conclusion of a wonderful week.

With that, the Disney half of our amazing honeymoon was complete and we set off for Tampa and the Carnival Legend.

Congratulations on your wedding/new job! Lots of exciting changes for you.

We just stayed in a DVC unit for the first time in June (a studio at the Boardwalk)...I agree that the mousekeeping situation is a little hard to get used to. Mostly I was afraid we were going to run out of shamppo

Love your wife's minnie/mickey balloons shirt...I have the same one! :sohappy:

Good luck with your marriage and new job!

congrats on your wedding!! love your pics...I'm originally from South Bend and went to high school right across the street from ND...so I've been in Sacred Heart many times - absolutely gorgeous place for a wedding!

Congratulations! Y'all are an adorable couple!
I'm so glad to see that you enjoyed the Behind the Seeds tour and La Nouba. Those are two new things we are trying on our August trip!:sohappy:

I agree with you on California Grill. We always make sure we have time to clean up & change when we have ADRs there. I hate seeing people in their "I've been at the park all day" clothes. I even saw a woman wearing a baseball cap there once! I really wish they would enforce the dress code.

We brought toiletries with us (hence the 67 pound suitcase at the airline check-in), and I think they would have provided extra soap or shampoo but we would have had to request it. They also said I had the option to change to "full service" mousekeeping for an additional charge. "Additional charge" scared me so I didn't even bother to ask how much. I guess the service is the same as what we've gotten from other non-DVC timeshare resorts, but it was just a bit disappointing that it wasn't included at OKW.
