Oh my God!! Johnny Depp?? Okay, I looooovvvvveeed his performance, but don't get me wrong. The obvious winner here should have been Bill Murray. My second choice would have been Johnny. I know I'm in the minority here, but there you are.

I loved his performance of Captain Jack Sparrow, but I don´t think he will get the Oscar for that.

As I see it, there is no specific way that character had to be done. He 'created' it and we didn´t have anything to expect. It was great, it was funny, etc., but there was no set character for us to compare or judge from.
The opposite happens with Sean Penn in Mystic River and with the others. There is a story and emotions involved, so we know how the character is supposed to react and it´s easy to judge wether we agree with his performance about it or not.
Did I make sense?

I liked Bill Murray in that movie and I could see him being nominated n a role that is very different to his previous ones. I hated "Lost in translation" though. It was obscure, boring and slow for me and made japanese people look as dumb and boring. I didn´t like Scarlett Johanson in it either, all I wanted to do to her was slapping her for the lack of character as a wife and low self steem as a woman! ...but I guess that was her role. hehe

I think it's absolutely amaziing that he won! The SAG awards are the only ones where it is ACTORS only who vote. With the Academy only writers vote for writers, etc but everybody votes for the acting awards. For SAG to have chosen him above Sean Penn and Bill Murray is also a recognition of a body of work that is more diversified than either Penn or Murray. IMHO.

Very suprised but not at all disappointed. I thought he did a great job on POC. I am not a Sean Penn fan but I do like Bill Murray. Whatever. Congrats to Mr. Depp.

One question though...just to clear it up. I know the SAG's are given to actors BY actors, but how does the Academy work. You say only writers vote for writers and so on...doesn't that bring about the same kind of voting where directors vote only for directors and actors for actors? Sorry I'm a bit confused :hammer:
