All news shows are digging out old footage of interviews with Carson. In every one of these interviews, I have always seen cigarette smoke very close to Carson.

Indeed... back in those days, I guess it was common place for the guests to come out with a drink, or a cigarette...

Carson was a chain smoker, but did his best to hide it from the TV audience. He had a shelf under his desk (on stage) where he kept his cigarettes, ash tray, lighters, etc. There was a vent with a duct system and an exhaust fan located backstage that sucked all of the smoke out from under his desk.

When the TV camera would cut away from him, he would lower his head behind the desk and take a drag off of his cigarette.
