Dropping Mars from the title because some brain trust said women would be offended.

I read that (Disney execs dropped the "...of Mars" from the title because they thought it would lessen its appeal to girls) but then if that was their concern, why not just call it by one of its proper title, "A Princess of Mars"?

Saw this movie on the Sci-Fi channel about a year ago. It was horrible!

Just spent $38 to take my gf to see John Carter in Imax 3D (yea manhattan is expensive) and I wouldn't ask for a dime back.

I thought the story was great, the acting was fine and the graphics very good.

I only wish it had more of the Indiana Jones dry humor.

The idiots who messed up te marketing should be run out of town. This could easily be the next big series like Pirates. Maybe replace the main character guy with a better known actor.

I agree with that. I think he was going for a tough-guy act. Very similar to how Batman's voice changes when he is in costume, yet nothing covers his mouth. lol.

But, overall, for a Disney live-action (never great), I thought it was a lot better than what the box-office sales have shown.

I give it a "meh." It deserves to recoup its investment in ticket sales, but I wouldn't award it a sequel, and CERTAINLY not a theme park attraction.

I could see it fitting in very well. We've got a new princess, tons of toy sales potential, easy meet and greet and you could make a ride like Star Tours.

Bad acting is one thing but really did not the giant salamander/dog alien annoy anybody?

An update - In it's second weekend, the film made $13 million in North America, for a total of $53 million. Overseas, it's doing better, up to $126 million, for a worldwide total of $179 million. Right now, there is a possibility the movie won't make back it's production budget of $250 million, to say nothing of marketing costs. This one's gonna be a bigger bomb for Disney than Prince of Persia.

Since Pirates of the Caribbean, all of Disney's "big" PG-13 action movies are so blatantly trying to kick off a franchise, it's becoming hard to enjoy them on their own terms.

I still think that this is 100% due to bad marketing/trailer. The problem is not that no one likes the movie and didn't go back or buy the DVD. The problem is that no one is being enticed to see it in the first place.

If people actually watched the movie, they would like it.
