Jiko Restaurant, what to order?

The wild boar appetizer is quite good, so good choice there. I had the short ribs last time and my wife had the pork and both were fantastic. You really can't go wrong with any choice. Also, if you are wine drinkers they have an amazing set of wines to go with anything you order so ask your server. This is now making me really want our reservation for August to get here:D Enjoy!!

I wouldn't get the filet. Jiko has a lot of unique flavors and you can get a filet anyplace.

It's also a garbage, overpriced, overrated cut of beef but that's not what you're asking. ;)

Never gone to Jiko before, Looking at the current menu, I can't decide what to order?

I'm planning on ordering the wild boar appetizer and either the peri roasted chicken flatbread or taste of africa. Main entry either being the short ribs, pork shank, or filet mac n cheese. All sound very good!
The wild boar appetizer (while small in quantity) is fantastic. The filet mac & cheese is the best steak on property.

See if you can get seated in the wine room. The wait staff there is exceptional and will guide you through the menu. Can't do better than that!! Been dining there every there since they opened and have never had an unexceptional meal.

I love Jiko but have to disagree that the filet is definately not the best on property in my personal opinion. I only get it for the delicious Mac and Cheese that I have instead of the current side with it. Still worth ordering of course as it is still very good, but I would not give it that accolade. Lol. I have had much better steaks on property. You really can't go wrong on any item on the menu. We always get the wild boar as one of our appetizers and love that! My DH also loves the lamb 2 ways. Order what appeals to you the most and you will not be dissapointed. Great restaurant! :)

SHORT RIBS all the way....this is their signature dish! Get there early since they have run out late at night(it happened to us)...I love the Jam Jar South African wine, too. For the appetizer Wild Boar or the bread service. Be risky...If you want a filet, go to Yachtsman, California Grill or Le Cellier.

I second the Wild Boar! Nommers!

The Filet w/ mac and cheese has been removed from the menu, but was still available by request (on my last trip in 2013). Not sure if they still do it as an off menu request, but I hope so, because it's fantastic!

Yes they still do it as a request. The filet itself is still on the menu but has a different side but I always request the Mac and cheese and they still do let you do that. If I remember right it's actually in small print on the menu next to the filet that you can substitute for the Mac and cheese with the Filet now. (Was not noted on the menu in 2013 when we went but was noted 11/14 when we went again) We just had it in November 2014 and others have had it this year as well. :)

Great to know! Yeah, the new menu has pole beans or something. Not a fan.

Get that mac!

I basically get the filet at Jiko just to get that Mac and Cheese! Lol Sad I know but it's my favorite Mac on property! They will even give you extra Mac if you ask nicely and both times I got extra did not charge us. One waiter even offered me, without asking if I wanted extra being I told him I liked it so much! :hungry:

I posted the recipe for it in the PML kitchen (as well as the whole dish...that sauce...takes FOREVER to make...) I was so tired after making it that I left off the microgreen salad I had prepared to make it more like the original dish when I took the final pictures...so, you just get the filet, the sauce and the steak in the pic!

That sauce is delicious buy if something takes forever to make I prob will not try it myself! Haha But I'm glad to know I can go find the recipe in the PML if I'm tempted to try it or get desperate for my fix if it's ever not offered anymore. Lol :p

The steak and mac and cheese part don't take very long. Less than an hour if you have mise en place. It's that friggin sauce! Mostly reduction...takes FOREVER...

I think I started cooking at something like 11a that day, and the dish wasn't finished until nearly 10p...

Agreed.

The issue is that there are several components to that sauce. Several reductions, then a final mix. It isn't hard...but it does take a while.
Reminds me of the Mushroom soup (don't have the name offhand) appetizer at Artist Point. We told the waiter one of the times we ate there how much we liked it and he came back to table with the recipe for it. 3 PAGES Long! A whole page/page and a half just for ingredients and another 2 pages for the instructions of how to prepare it! I still have it as a keepsake but that's it. Lol Needless to say we never tried it at home and just visit AP for our fix. Lol! :bookworm:
