Well this isn't nearly as wild as those, but if you prefer your wheelbases shorter rather than longer, here's one of the first customized Firebolts I've seen:

Nah, the R1's got a 55" wheelbase, the Buell is 52". They're not really directly comparable at all. You'd be comparing a full-faired, water cooled in-line four Japenese race-replica to a half faired, air-cooled V-Twin American street-bike. It's a bit of an apples/oranges comparison.

I thought I read somehwere that Harley/Buell was going to release an american "crotch rocket" to compete with the japanese imports. They should be targeting this bad boy.

Actually I shouldn't speak too soon. These people were running the Buell against a Ducati with an R1 thrown in for fun, and they found the Buell did beat the R1:

You'll be seeing some interesting things in a couple months, but I've never heard any indication that Buell or Harley Davidson intended to "Me-to" the Hayabusa or R1. The R1 would certainly be closer to their target since it's light weight and can handle reasonably well, but the 'Busa is an overweight pig. With its 58.5 in wheelbase, the 'Busa would be more comparable to a V-Rod than a Buell, more intended for the drag-strip than twisties.

Yeah yeah I know the 'Busa is a beast. I am sure Buell could compete with the smaller Honda's though, the F4i and the smaller suzuki's like the 600's.

Yep, that's what they race against. They don't have much of an organized racing program, but there are a few riders who compete in FUSA. Eric Wood took Louden last year

The only race so far this year was Daytona. I forget the details, but I think a Buell rider took second place but was disqualified because he ran out of gas at the very end and couldn't run the post-race dyno. There's something coming up in Indiana in a couple weeks that should be fun.

If I had to buy a Japanese bike for some reason, I'd probably go for an SV650. I've never liked inline fours. They just don't seem to have any character, and it's hard enough to find places to go 100 mph without paying track fees, taking off your turnsignals and taping up your headlight, let alone 150. It's practically impossible to wind the things up into the RPM ranges where they really perform.

The last Japanese bike that really interested me was way before your time, the RZ350 two-stroke:

All very good points Gary. I will keep this in mind when it is time to get a new bike. Just took my buddies for spin about a week ago. Honda CBR 6-speed special edition, it has some pick up, but like you said, no where to really open it up.

I agree with you there DCM, Paul Sr needs to take a chill pill; Maybe it's how the show is edited, but it appears that he doesn't do much but get on Paul Jr's case, when IMO he could get more involved or shut up

Well don’t take my tastes too seriously. Everybody likes different things, that's why there are so many vastly different designs. I’m probably in the minority when it comes to my preferences in cars and motorcycles. I grew up riding around the mountains of western Pennsylvania, so that’s part of the reason I like smaller, lighter bikes. I also had a motorcycle class instructor who was an amazing rider and a semi-pro racer. He rode a Ducati, so that helped me develop an interest in lean, V-twins during my formative years.

It seems like most people in the US prefer big, heavy, powerful bikes. I can’t imagine who would ever buy something like this Rune, but I’m sure they’ll sell quite a few:
