I have never been to Mardi Gras but My husband ( is from louisiana ) has been and he likes Mamou( sp?) better at this time . His family owns a bar there .They celebrate it just as much but what he told me its much safer there. One day he said we are going to louisiana during Mardi gras instead of Thanksgiving time so I can see the celebration .. He did say though there are celebrations for everything in louisiana is that true Debbie

My dad is at Mamou (pronounces MawMoo) today! I would love to get there one day. My husband is on Severn Ave. and all of my friends went to Gheens (pronounced Gaines). In Gheens, if you stay along the parade route too long after the parade is over; they come along with a stick and start to beat you. You have to get on your knees and make the Sign of the Cross and say pardon in French!
There are celebrations for everything here in Louisiana. Some of the best are:
Strawberry festival
St. Joseph's alters (these can get very elaborate; they are gorgeous)
French Quarter festival
Jazz Fest (Thursday and Friday only; otherwise too many people)
St. Patricks Day parades (catch alot of cabbage, carrots, potatoes)
Crawfish Festival (in Breaux Bridge; home of Ali Landry)

Wow Debbie your the only one from the New Orleans area that I have spoken to that knows where Mamou is lol it is so small its like three blocks long. When Richard's Grandma died( she lived there ) everyone from the town came to the funeral and almost all of Richards family is has burial or is buried at Los Meg ( sp?) He is originally from Eunice but now his immediate family ( mom sister and brothers and their family) live in Lake Charles . I want to go back I miss it .I forgot if I told you that info sorry if I repeated it (about my husband and his family ) . I wish I could live there if only Richard could have a compatable job there as he does here we could .

I love learning about the "backwoods" places; that's why I know about some of them. My dad is the type to travel, not by interstate, but on the backroads. He loves the 'mom and pop' places! One day, Don and I are going to jump on the Harley, and see all of this (when we get one).
Louisiana is not a good place to look, or even dream of finding a good job, much less one compatible to what your husband in now. Our economy stinks here, and alot of my friends are always wondering if their job is going to end. Monsanto is a big employer here, with the average person earning about $22.00 an hour for a 48 hour week. That's excellent money here, yet it could all end with the stroke of a pen. The other plants here pay about the same and they have been bought out in the past few years. Alot of changes are gonna happen.
For now, come visit.

Thanks for the pics! I wanna see more! Do people dress in costumes? I like doing it, but none of my friends does or even cares about Carnival. I went out last night for the parade -got there late so didn´t see it- but I didn´t see people in costumes like years ago... sad.

THe weather was damp, but our spirits were not...

Hello...well, another Mardi Gras has come and gone. (yippee  )

The parade (Zeus) in Metairie, was rained out Monday night, and was rescheduled to ride after the two truck float parades that follow Argus on Mardi Gras day. I had spent the night at my friends house who lives in Metairie. We had to get up very early to load up the cars with our beads and other stuff and be on our way to the truck float by 5am.

Our club used a new truck float this year, but not necessarily a better one...we did not have a roof, and luckily it was only misty most of yesterday morning, because it was foggy.

We had a good ride dispite the inclimate weather and the turnout was a big and loud as ever. (note to self...bring earplugs next time:lol: )
