Please, don't remind me... :hurl: I hate Carnaval, the city is already a huge mess, and if you don't like it you don't have much option, you might as well stay home, it's safer anyways... :brick: :brick:

Wow! You live in Rio!!

Yeah, I guess if you live there, you'll get sick of all the hype and tourists. I guess the people that live in New Orleans might feel the same about Mardi Gras!

I'd love to be where you are....at least once anyway!

We have "Carnaval" too... started last night with the kid´s parade. Parades are at nights on Friday, Saturday and Monday. Around noon on Sunday and Tuesday.

My favorite one is the one for Monday night because it is the "regional dress" parade. Everybody dressed with the regional dress (typical dress from Yucatan) which is white with embroidered or cross stitched colorful flowers on top and bottom) and the scene just looks very pretty....everybody dancing to the typical music from the State. :)

On Tuesday is the "Battle of Flowers" as it originally was, but not anymore...

Carnaval is fun for many people, but I hate to see my city like a mess, soooo dirty, so noisy, the traffic jams, drunk people, etc etc... I am going to Cancun instead! :D

Wow,... Cool, Maria!

Do they have floats and stuff like that? ( no naked people right? )

Take pictures and post 'em!!

We have our own "carnaval" at work today!!!

If Discovery Channel looks wierd in Mexico or the screen just goes black,...It's beacuse we are partying in discovery Latin America ( Miami ) today!! Nobody is working!! ( I think we are still broadcasting )

LOL

CT : - )

Just kidding for any WDW members that work for DCI headquarters in DC. ( We are actually working VERY hard today! )

I used to live in New Orleans and went the first year I was there to Mardi Gras. Spent the entire Fat Tuesday downtown, went home absolutely exhausted and never went back again to a single parade. It was a neat experience, but I tired of it quickly. Some people obviously get into it big time, but it can be a pain if you live in the actual city hosting the parades. Great time to go out of town.

I´ll try to make an effort and go to the parade tonight. If I do, I´ll post a few pics. There are floats and girls almost wearing nothing dancing, yeah...

I wanna see pics of other carnivals too! So Wesley, Debbie, take your cameras! :animwink:

Mardi Gras...The Good, the Bad and the Ugly

As a resident of the French Quarter for many years, I have mixed feelings about Mardi Gras.

The Good: The parades and costumes are the best thing about Mardi Gras to me. The parades are fun (most times) to go to watch, and the costumes are really beautiful. On Mardi Gras day, most of the parade watchers also costume, and it is fun to "people watch".

The Bad:
At the very top of my "Bad" list is the public urination that happens from Friday (today) through Mardi Gras day.

The city provides portable toilets in the downtown area and French Quarter area, but you have to know where to find them. Folks don't take the time to find these facilities, so they just decide to urinate anywhere, at anytime. GROSS, GROSS, GROSS.
The police can't keep up with it, but if they catch someone in the act, the person will be carted off to jail for __________________ in public.

I will go the market tomorrow to buy a few gallon sized bottles of bleach to disinfect the sidewalks where people (Men and Women) have been relieving themselves all night.

Noise is second on the "Bad" list...I live one street from Bourbon, so we get the overflow from the crowds. Tonight when the parades end, the masses will once again flow into the heart of the FQ to party. The noise will be a mixture of loud muisc, and people yelling (why do they always yell??) etc, ususally lasting until about 4am.

The Ugly: Trash is the tops on this list. This is how we guage how successful Mardi Gras is, by the tonnage of trash collected during Carnival. Fortunately for us here in the French Quarter, the garbage is collected 6 days a week.

The city is trying it's best to keep things clean, but with the masses of people at Mardi Gras, it is quite a task.

On today's news, they were showing how busy our airport is... People were coming in for Carnival and locals were leaving as they do every year, to escape the "madness".

I won't be celebrating Mardi Gras here at home either...I will be in a truck float parade, in Metairie, LA... We will be the first truck float parade following Argus, the main parade in Metairie on Mardi Gras afternoon.

So, if you're going to be in the area, look for truck #19 (first truck parade) Our truck theme is "The Mardi Gras Express" and is decorated like a railroad train. I'll be the third person on the driver's side. Just yell, "Throw Me Something, Camelot !
:sohappy: :sohappy: :sohappy:

The weather sounds like it will be nice on Tuesday...we have been worried, because several parades were canceled and rescheduled due to rain this season....but it's a one-time shot for us.

And hopefully, I won't get hit again with a can of beer, as happened last year...talk about hurt. It really took the spirit out of me, so I just sat it out for a while...Then I got mad at how stupid and cruel some people are.

But then I figured, why should I let some jerk spoil my fun, and got back into action, throwing my beads and stuff. :king: :king:

Happy Mardi Gras (March 4, 2003)

I have never had the desire to go to Mardi gras,to me it`s just a small version of Sodom and Gamora! All the perverseness that goes on is rediculous!
yes you get pretty beads, but at what price? besides I have a female friend that goes every year and she always gives me some beads!:)

You know, I just happen to have Monday and Tuesday off this week, and was considering going to New Orleans. I probably won't, though...I love my car too much to drive him down there into the madness and none of my adventurous friends have cars. (And none of my friends with cars would go, either.) *sigh*

The older I get, the less I want anything to do with Mardi Gras in New Orleans. I actually haven't spent Mardi Gras Day in New Orleans since I was 16. Now we go to Metairie. It's more family oriented; without the tourist. I feel safer in Jefferson Parish, where the Sheriff won't let anything go. In Orleans Parish, there are too many people for the NOPD to do anything about. Also, the problem with staying from 5am to 5pm on a parade route is the toilet facilities. It's not a nice subject to discuss, but the problem, like Camelot said, where can you go? With the kidney problems I've been having; it's not a good idea to hold it that long.
Camelot, we have friends who have a place on Royal Street. I bet the entire French Quarter is nasty come Ash Wednesday?

That's one of the problems we have... Specially downtown around the parade area... :hurl:

I just hate the whole thing. I just can't have fun if I'm being surrounded by a mass of sweaty, drunk, loud, obnoxious people.

You forgot to add naked! My sentiments exactly. Mardi Gras in New Orleans is for the out-of-towners. Mardi Gras in the suburbs is for families who want to have a good time (still gotta have a designated driver), but don't want to deal with unruly tourist.

Two of my friends (who I will be riding with on the truck float parade on Mardi Grad day in Metairie) are going to the Endymion Parade Extravaganza tonight, at the Superdome. I am staying home, as I usually do on the Saturday before Mardi Gras, because I like to make sure things are OK here.

I will probably walk to Canal Street, to watch the Sunday afternoon parades. I have never been to a night parade in New Orleans in all the years I have lived here. But when I used to live in Metairie, I would go to the night and day parades and felt safe doing so.

Debbie...yes, the French Quarter is a nasty mess on Ash Wednesday, but the garbage crews usually have the mess cleaned up by the end of the day.

Oh and today when I got home from the grocery store, I had to take a double-take, when two young ladies walked by and I realized that they were wearing body paint on their chests...and nothing else....which was why they were carrying their blouses. Goodness, what next??

Geeze...the partiers were out until 5:30am this morning.

My neighbor (who lives upstairs) just told me that they saw a guy climb over my 7 foot high driveway gate and they yelled at the guy to get out of there, and he said he had to go to the bathroom.

Don't these people realize they are trespassing on private property??

Three more days and counting....:dazzle: :dazzle: :dazzle:
