It's time for Disney to re-invent it's original characters to today's youth.

As Walt once said on a train ride back to California from the East Coast, "It all began with a mouse". That's right. Disney World began with Mickey Mouse and then Minnie, Goofey, Pluto, Donald and the gang.
If you go to Disney World you still see all of those characters, but they are really upstaged many times by today's newer characters. The reason is that today's kids just dont know Mickey like many of us did. Im only 24 but I grew up watching Mickey Mouse, yet he's nothing today on the tube.

I think it's great that Disney creates new characters that are unique to today's youth, but how many of you would like to see a new rise in the original Disney characters. I would love to see a new push to put Mickey, Minnie, Donald, Goofey and the gang back into the main prime time of the cartoon world. I would love to see a new Disney movie hit the big screen with the original characters.

I love the new ones but I just hope they stick with the Mouse as Walt Wanted.

How many would like to see this happen?

I really liked that show "House of Mouse"... But yeah, I agree, I want to see the original gang back on the screen again. I don't mind purchasing DVDs to see them, but it would be great to have them on the tube again...

I agree completely. Today's kids have abandoned the classic Disney characters and have moved on to Kim Possible, Buzz Lightyear, etc. I'm not saying that it is wrong but I just couldn't imagine Mickey, Donald, and the crew being outshadowed by Nemo or one of the Proud Family.

I disagree slightly. Maybe a few more shows for the original gang, but not necessarily *reinvent* them.

My kids love the original characters. They scream if I change the channel off the house of mouse. My 4 y/o always asks to watch the MM Treasures DVD, and my 3 y/o is crazy about Donald and can't wait to see Mickey's Philharmagic.

I dont exactly mean "reinvent" them in the true meaning. What Im trying to say is "bring them back" to the level they used to be.

I want them being the exact same. I dont want them any different.

I just want Disney World to keep Walt in mind and never let that go. I dont want Aladin to become the Mickey in 10 years.

I want the original gang to be known to today's youth. im glad you kids know of him but I asked a kid the other day whom just got back from Disney World who "goofey" was and she had no idea. That's because they dont ever see them unless they're at the parks. They need to keep Walt's legacy alive by never letting those characters go, and that doesnt just mean keeping the in th eparks but putting them back on the screen in new animated movies.

The thing is Disney is putting the main characters out there more than ever the past few years.

It's a very fine line to dance, becasue you don't want to OVER expose the charactes. Cause then in a few years, the luster wears off.

Disney has done a remarkable job of keeping Mickey and the gang exposed just enough. If you saw TV shows all the time with him, alot of people would get tired and it's not that big of a deal. So now when you go to the park, it's a BIGGER deal to see Mickey 'cause he's not out there "hocking" 20 different products and TV shows.

But things like House of Mouse, more DVD movies, new attractions & some other bit parts on ABC & Disney Channel are helping to introduce Mickey to a newer generation.

CASE IN POINT: The Matrix and Star Wars movies, the new ones were promoted so much, everyone got sick of it real quick. Sure the buzz was initially there, but the fallout tarnishs everything that was built up

That's what the doctor ordered in my opinion!

I think Mickey needs to make a HUGE comeback and Disney can do it.

Now that you mention it, I thinK I remember hearing something about it too.

Mickey has the ability to be just as big today as he's ever been, it's just something about him, or maybe it's that everything Walt touches is like gold, it just worked.

Now I remember hearing somewhere, and now I wish I remember where, that the 50th animated movie to come out of Disney will be a mickey mouse movie. I could be wrong and my source could be full of it, but I remember hearing that somewhere.

I don't see why people are saying that Mickey isn't in the spotlight enough. I mean, in the last few years he's had two popular Saturday Morning television shows (House of Mouse and Mickey's Mouse Works), a number of DVD films (Once Upon A Christmas, Mickey's Magical Christmas, Mickey's House of Villains), rereleasing many of his classic shorts on DVD through the Treasures collection, more movies on the way (Three Muskateer and Twice Upon A Christmas), tons of new merchendise, and lots of theme park exposure (Mickey's Philharmagic, Mickey's Toontown and Mickey's Toontown Fair, Camp Minnie-Mickey, Mickey's Jammin Jungle Parade, etc.).

I grew up with the classic Disney characters. I'm 21, so when I was young, classic Disney cartoon shorts were always shown on the Disney Channel.

Some of my favorite cartoon characters are ones like Mickey, Minnie, Goofy, Pluto, Chip and Dale, and Donald (just look at my name and avatar). Mickey is still popular, but some others just aren't anymore.

I'm thrilled about the old Disney shorts being on DVD, but I think kids today should be able to watch the good ol' Disney cartoons on TV. I understand that times change, so there are new characters around today - but we can't forget the ones that started it all.

This is a great thread. A few thoughts:

I would like to see Mickey in a feature film, but I don't think it will happen. There is nothing exotic about Mickey. He is our pal, the good guy who finishes first, and the universal figure of the Disney animated world. He has assumed the role of MC as of late, and I think that elaborating on a short cartoon of yester-year would only disappoint the high expectations of Disney animated film fans.

There is also the factor story-telling in Disney films as of late. Panoramic backdrops, complex characters, less-then-clear lines between good and evil. I'm talking about Brother Bear, Nemo, Lilo & Stitch, and Monsters, Inc. These movies appeal to adults because of the complexity of characters, the setting, etc. as well as to kids. I would not want to be an imagineer trying to come up with the setting and plot that would match these recent films involving Mickey and his persona (although if anyone could do it, it would be those guys).

Lastly, Mickey is already recognized as an icon (i.e HMs around WDW) with just about everyone who has been slightly exposed to Disney. He certainly doesn't NEED a movie for the next generation to know who he (and Minnie, Donald, Goofy, etc.) is. CIP: We just got back from WDW last month, and my three year old got just as much of a kick out of seeing Mickey as any other character, not to mention wearing his "ears" around for a week down there - he has never seen any classic Mickey films or cartoons. He just knows who Mickey is, and Mickey lives down there.

Hey, I would love to see it. I just don't think they'll do it.

Sorry for the long post.

Around The World

Something many of you may not be considering...

go pretty much anywhere in the world (including the Carribbean of course mate) and mention the name Mickey and I assure you it will be rather difficult to find more than 25 people or so who don't know who he is.

Mickey is the big cheese and he always will be!

'Some imagination...huh!?!'

my point

well that's really not my point. I agree that people will know who he is. I know many names of characters that I've never seen the movie to. Believe it or not, I've never seen Buzz lightyear or Aladin but I know who they are. Im more into original characters.

My point is this................the kids of today only know mickey mouse through actually going to Disney World primarily. Sure they see him on a cartoon or two every now and then.

My point though I think is that I would like to see an effort by Disney to put Mickey back in lights and on the big screen again. I think it would just be good.

I saw last night that Warner Brothers is putting millions into bringing Daffy Duck and Bugs Bunny into the limelight again by coming out soon with a new movie in theatres.

that's what iM saying. I would love a movie from Disney like that with Mickey and the gang.

Im saying this now... MICKEY HAS NO RIDE!!! no no no no ride... Mickey's toontown fair is just boring now... My family only really goes there togo on the goofy coaster. I remember as a kid they had a show with all the characters including Darkwing Duck. Its gone now... Mickey has no sit down ride... They have shows that star him or he makes a cameo in a ride.. But he is no where??? Why dosnt Disney make up a steam boat willie ride?!?! Mickeys first cartoon....

No, I does not need to happen. We don't need raper Mickey, nor drug addicit Goofy. They stand for something that you can't just emulate into a different generation. Frankly, people have enough respect for the current way the characters are represented, and chaning it would ruin the respect.

Thank you! :sohappy:

Finally youthful words of wisdom. Im only 24 myself and feel that those characters are pretty much ending with my generation.

I agree with a previous poster, no ride has Mickey as the head honcho. They need a sit down ride with him.

One previous poster said it doesnt need to happen because of "Raper Mickey" or crack addict goofey? What's that about? That's the dumbest most rediculous thing I've heard.

What's going to happen when today's kids one day are CEO of that park? They will not care about Mickey, sure they'll know him but he will not be the centerpiece of Disney World and therefore the parks will have slipped further away from Walt than they ever have.

They need to bring Mickey Back!
