One of the things that Disney did so well, was the intangibles. Things like this, as a standalone, don't really mean all that much. But combined with all the other intangible things, it separates Disney. At least for the more frequent visitors, it was part of that Disney ambiance that made it feel, I'm at Disney. Just like so many other things that are now gone from the parks.
It all points to a bigger issue with Disney. And that's management just doesn't care. They see a show element or a background detail as unimportant. If it's gone no one will notice, so why spend the money. But I really do believe it's just like not knowing what ingredient something tastes great. But when you start taking things away, you notice. You might not be able to say why exactly, but you know something is different.
