Trip Report "It's for work, I swear!"

When I have my students complete identification questions, I always make them give me the who, what, when, where, and why of the word. So that's what I’m going to give you.

Who: Myself and @lostpro9het

What: Another trip to Disney

When: March 19 – 23

Where: Pop Century

Why: Here's perhaps the most important bit of info. It's not for fun trip (yes it is). It's for work, I swear! Sean has a conference. He cannot go to Orlando without me. He just can't.

The seeds of this trip were planted around October of last year. Sean mentioned a big IT conference and said he probably wouldn't go. Fast forward to a few months ago and he's decided he's going.

First things first...I book airfare via SouthWest. Let me tell you now. I HATE FLYING. I'm convinced we are all going to die. I've been reading a book to learn strategies to help with this, so we (and you) will see how it goes.

I had to do some research regarding the Orlando Convention Center, conference hotels (not a Disney one in sight – boo), and all the costs associated with the trip. We were trying to find a hotel that fit the following qualifications: remained within the per diem, free transport to Disney or Disney Springs OR within walking distance of DS. Guess what? None of those fit.

We chose Cabana Bay Resort at Universal. I had resigned myself to the possibility of not visiting WDW. Sacrilege, I say. I wouldn't have minded staying there, but if there's a Disney alternative, I'm taking it. Fast forward to today. We were trying to arrange a shuttle to/from the airport. It was approx. $70 RT for the both of us and we'd be at the mercy of Mears. I then looked up rental car prices. They weren't bad, plus we wouldn't be reliant on the shuttle AND we could visit Disney AND have all of our Disney food choices. This is really what we wanted.

I crunched the numbers.

Cabana Bay was almost $900, plus $12 for parking.

Pop Century WITH a rental car was $793. No brainer. I canceled Cabana Bay asap and booked Pop with a car rental.

Everything (except my FP selections) have been planned.

What can you expect on this trip:
  • Me flying – yikes. I'm not as nervous as I usually am about flying, so I take that as a good sign.
  • Me driving in Orlando. - I'm taking Sean to/from the convention center. Parking is $15/day (unless someone knows something I don't), so that's not even an option.
  • Me solo at the parks – I'm going to ride some rides solo and get some character photos.
We're super-excited that we will be at Disney 2-ish weeks.

Checked in for flight home. Both in group A.

2 questions:
1. Does Pop Century have the ability to print boarding passes?
2. Has anyone ever rented from Budget? Any idea how you return the car?

Off to MK today. I probably will not ride any major rides. My goal is character photos and shows.
The Resort Airline Check in desk at Pop (outside the main hall) opens at 5 am and can print boarding passes and check your bags (your flight must be a minimum of 3 hours later if you want to check your bags and have Disney transport them to the airport.)

Can't help with the rental car.

So far so good!

We're about to head back to the room to clean up for our Wave ADR and a night at MK. I'm pretty sure some Unibroue is in my future!

One of the not so hidden gems, The Wave, is still a fam favorite. We've never had a bad dining experience here and tonight was no exception. We started things off with bread and a cheese board. Laura went with a keg wine and I had a St. Bernardus Abt 12. For mains, Laura went with the seared scallops and I had the season gnocchi. The food, service, and atmosphere were excellent!

Enjoy! Does the beer flight at the Wave change?
It hasn't while we've been going BUT the beer menu has blown up here since last year with some real winners in the list!

Looks delicious. I've never tried the wave, may have to put it on my bucket list. I'm not going to lie...when I read the above I stopped at keg and for a second was shocked that a restaurant would sever Laura a whole keg LOL :facepalm:

The pour was close to being the whole keg! They did not skimp on the pour. I thought I was going to have to stop a few times on the walk back to MK!

2nd flight done

This flight was better than the 1st because I knew what to expect. I'd read a lot of negative comments about Southwest. Someone sitting behind us on the flight said boarding was complete chaos. I disagree. It was orderly and quick. You can't beat free bags, snacks, and drinks. Plus, I rebooked this flight so many times because the price kept decreasing with no fees. No issues at all. I recommend Southwest if you've never tried them. I don't mind not being able to choose my seat.

Solo at WDW is a different experience. It felt odd at times, but for the most part I just took in my surrounding and enjoyed the parks.

I should have included my thoughts about Pop.
We did not get that elusive king bed, but it was fine. The room was clean and comfortable. The grounds were impeccible.

As most of you know, we most always stay DVC accommodations. There's a huge difference between value and deluxe. I missed having separate shampoo and conditioner, body lotion, thicker towels, and quieter rooms. The bus situation was ok. POP is way out there at the bus depots at the parks and was frequently crowded. However, it was really fun to stay there again, and we wouldn't hesitate to book the resort again in the future.

The Wave was excellent once again. I like that the menu changes. The cheese board and scallops were delicious.

Looks to me like you're in Higher Education? Oh, how I wish we used that software here.

For now I am...

Was that Ellucian that does the app? I think we use that app...or like, we have it. Dunno if anyone uses it. What do you do in higher ed, just out of curiosity? I do photography and social media at a small-ish private college. I like the environment!

Through June 1, I'm a DBA for a midsized public university. I'm also responsible for maintaining our student information system, Banner. Banner is the bread & butter product of Ellucian. Ellucian Live had over 8,000 participants which included IT, registrars, finaid workers, admissions folks, and student success folks with hundreds of schools represented. So it was more than IT conference but it was focused on what an IT product can do and does for a school.

Yup, Banner can manage that. Are you all a Banner school?
