Trip Report It's Christmastime in Disney!

Hello, fellow Disney fiends! My family and I just returned home from a short visit to the World, and I wanted to share our journey with all of you.

The traveling party includes:

Me, Sarah, a 32-year-old teacher and mother of one
DH, a 40-year-old Scrooge
DD, a 3-year-old who regularly requests that I tell her stories about princesses who are lost in Disney World. (How she came up with this idea remains a mystery.)

I have been vacationing at Disney World for twenty-two years, and I have accumulated lots of knowledge about the comings and goings of the parks and hotels (thanks, in great part, to wonderful trip reports on this site). I thoroughly enjoy the planning that goes into a trip, and because of that, I found I really enjoyed the My Experience app. Throughout the trip, I changed Fastpass+ reservations several times, and except for never getting the wifi to work at Magic Kingdom, I appreciated the system.

We began our trip on Saturday, December 20, when we left our home in a Raleigh suburb and drove to WDW. We have done many road trips in my young daughter's life, but this one was tedious. I think I just wanted to BE there, so the journey paled in comparison to the destination. The ride home was equally tedious, though, so I might just be outgrowing the road trip phase of my youth.

At any rate, after about ten hours, we arrived at our home for the week:

IMG_1506.JPG

Let the angels sing, y'all! Art of Animation! I lucked into a four-night reservation just about 50 days prior to our trip. If I hadn't had this hotel, I might have considered forgoing the trip for a year or so, but this was too good to be true. I knew my Pixar-loving girl would be fascinated by the Cars section, and her burgeoning love of princesses meant our room in the Little Mermaid section would also make her happy.

IMG_1507.jpg

And it did. In fact, she was thrilled and surprised to find that we would be sleeping here for four nights. :)

After unpacking our luggage (only three small drawers in the dresser) and putting cooler items in the fridge (bottom shelf of fridge fit a gallon of milk), we went out to take pictures... I mean, explore.

We had a first floor room in building nine (room 9557), and we had a view of the parking lot and an arm of the building.

DSCF1902.jpg

I didn't mind the view at all. In fact, the first floor location was convenient given all the extra stuff we had to bring for the extensive ride. Plus, because we got a prime parking spot right at the edge of the lot, we could actually see our car from our window. And from time to time I had to run to the car to get something/put something away, and it was really easy for us.

I will say that our building was noisy. At home, we sleep with a fan on, so I think that was really the biggest difference. But we definitely heard the kids jumping around upstairs and knocks in the rooms adjacent as we tried to get our preschooler (and her exhausted mom) to sleep.

Regardless of the noise, we loved the hotel and the over-the-top theme-ing.

What's not to love about these power lines and streetlights, am I right?

Two buck teeth for one buck! (We love Mater's Tall Tales in our house.)

Love the bright colors in every area of the resort-- including the gorgeous Christmas decorations.

We have all seen these lovely displays of sketches in the lobby, but here's another shot.

My sister and her two girls (five and three) live about 40 minutes away, so we made plans to meet up that evening for dinner. We ended up going to DTD and eating on the patio at Rainforest Cafe.

As we sat down, the sun was dipping below the horizon, and this was our view:

IMG_1533.JPG

My thoughts on this experience are this: With little ones who are slightly averse to loud noises and dark places, the patio was fabulous. Decent food, amazing view, and still access to the interior for periodic walk-throughs. The weather was perfect with a slight breeze and warm air. Overall, it was a beautiful start to the vacation.

The next morning, I took some photos before the sun came up. It was extra magic hours at Magic Kingdom, so I was revved up and ready to go!

The three-year-old and I were ready to go, so we got on the second Magic Kingdom bus at 6:30 on December 21. We couldn't wait to see this:

IMG_1543.jpg

DSCF1938.JPG

And this:

IMG_1545.jpg

And THIS:

IMG_1546.jpg

Let's just give it a minute to sink in, shall we?

IMG_1547.jpg

DSCF1945.jpg

As we got onto our first ride, one of us was squealing.

IMG_1549.jpg

You'll never guess which one. ;)

So, my daughter has actually been to Disney World before, but she was only nine months old, so I don't count it. However, her first ride EVER, back in 2012, was the carousel. This trip: same thing. Today when I asked her what her favorite ride is, she says the carousel. (Then I reminded her about It's a Small World, which we rode four times. She's on the fence now.)

IMG_1550.jpg

Is it just me, or is the back of the castle totally underrated? Love the dimension here.

I had yet to visit New Fantasyland, so off we went. Let's get on Under the Sea with Ariel, etc.!

Where are all the people? Asleep in their beds, that's where. And they are missing out!

We may have needed a bathroom break (between myself and the preschooler, we tested out every bathroom in the Kingdom).

Navigate, daughter!

Ooh, ahh, etc. It's beautiful. And the temperatures were ideal. I was thrilled to be in this happy place in this gorgeous sunlight with my favorite person.

DSCF1958.JPG

We originally had a Fastpass+ to meet Rapunzel and Cinderella, but the wait was only 20 minutes, so off we went.

DSCF1963.jpg

I'm including this crummy photo for one reason: I thought Rapunzel was a fabulous princess. Instead of waiting in her spotlight for my shy daughter to approach her, she came right over and immediately engaged with her. She was going on and on about how she had a crown like DD's and how she spent two days on an adventure after Flynn stole the crown. Something like that. Anyway, I thought she was wonderful.

DSCF1967.JPG

I apologize for no face pictures. I try to preserve a semblance of online privacy for my tiny human.

DSCF1968.jpg

My tiny human... was not all that chatty with the princesses. I hope she will open up a little as she grows up, but if she never does, that's fine with me. I'm all about going with the flow when we are enjoying some downtime.

Cinderella does a lovely twirl. :)

I'm not saying we needed another bathroom break, but since the stroller parking is adjacent to the tower, we spent a significant amount of time in this area. We had to see the prettiest bathrooms that ever were, right?

DSCF1976.jpg

The light this morning was stunning.

DSCF1979.jpg

Reenacting the dancing scene. (We just rewatched this today. Great music and spirit.)

DSCF1982.jpg

Can I get an amen for this skyline?

DSCF1984.JPG

Next we hopped in the short line for It's a Small World. We would, over the course of three days, ride this four times, three of which required a 40+ minute wait. File that under "things we do for our kids."

Although, to be fair, I love the simple joy of this ride. I also love the song. It's the wait that I found to be unappealing.

DSCF1989.JPG

DSCF2001.JPG

Pictures from the ride: atrocious as ever. Moving on.

We needed a snack. I needed more time exploring Belle's world. To Gaston's Tavern we go!

DSCF2004.jpg

We ordered apples with caramel, a coffee (for DH), and... well... just wait.

DSCF2003.JPG

I found this sweet cinnamon roll to be very satisfying, although I wouldn't recommend that amount of sugar for breakfast on a regular basis.

Making our way back through Fantasyland. We need the Madhatter's Teacups, stat!

DSCF2005.JPG

Wait, didn't we just eat? Let's make Daddy sick! Spin! Spin!

DSCF2006.JPG

This ride gets lots of love from the females in our family. :)

At this point, my kiddo wanted speed. So we heading to the Speedway to get her fix. She wanted to drive.

DSCF2007.JPG

Mommy got whiplash. Oh, well. Hands were free for picture-taking!

DSCF2008.jpg

DSCF2011.jpg

I'm not saying that the biggest reason for my Disney love as an adult is the opportunities to take photos, but it's up there.

DSCF2012.jpg

DSCF2013.JPG

We then moved on to the Peoplemover. My kiddo is not much of a napper, so I knew the only way to keep her going was to intersperse restful activities with less restful ones. So, let's Peoplemove.

DSCF2018.JPG

At this point, DD declared "This is the best ride ever!" I'm not sure she was resting appropriately.

Love the views.

So, at this point, we needed a Dumbo ride. She experienced the queue as a nine-month-old (she started walking at six months, so the toddler section was perfect for her back then), and she loved it as a three-year-old. In fact, she asked to go on Dumbo several times, ostensibly so that she could play on the playground.

IMG_1586.jpg

Well, we did manage a mid-day retreat to the hotel.

IMG_1591.jpg

But we didn't rest. We played. My nieces and sister came over, so we took advantage of the pool and play areas.

IMG_1594.jpg

That night, we were obligated to return to the Magic Kingdom. The only Fastpass+ that we actually kept this entire trip was a 6:30 visit to Anna and Elsa.

It was pouring rain. So crowded. Did I mention it was raining and crowded? Oh, and that my three-year-old fell asleep on the bus over and was incredibly grumpy and antisocial?

But that stinking castle was so gorgeous that the whole miserable evening was almost worth it. Almost.

DSCF2026.jpg

Humbug. I'm looking at these pictures and remembering the snow on Main Street, USA, and thinking it actually WAS worth it.

DSCF2029.JPG

It was stunning. We never did see Elsa light that baby up, but the result was this sparkling spectacle.

The rest of Main Street was lit up as well, and it was beautiful.

IMG_1602.jpg

I didn't waste battery power on switching modes. Oops.

DSCF2027.JPG

So, how did the meeting with Anna and Elsa go? Well, not well. Grumpy Girl was grumpy, and I can't blame her. But we did successfully get a peek of Elsa's lovely shoes (although Elsa herself was... a little icy and not good with a disengaged preschooler).

DSCF2033.jpg

Anna was much better with my daughter, which is in character, I suppose. Anna was talking about Olaf and going on and on without a peep from DD. Oh, well. At least she got to see the girls.

DSCF2037.JPG

After she coaxed Daddy into purchasing Anna and Elsa dolls in the bright gift shop (where I witnessed literally hundreds of dollars in poncho sales while waiting in line), we decided to call it a night. Being wet wasn't so bad, since it was warmish, but the crowds and the darkness were very disorienting for me. We returned to the hotel, spent the night playing with her new dolls, and went to bed.

The next morning, my tiny wonder and I were up for Epcot. Ann and Elsa came too.

DSCF2043.jpg

It opened at nine, but I thought it opened at eight. Let's just say we had time to meander and hang out in the Land.

DSCF2041.JPG

DSCF2044.jpg

Although she hasn't seen Bambi, DD thought these two were cute.

DSCF2046.JPG

DSCF2052.jpg

See, they dropped the rope (intermittently) for Soarin' and Test Track. I was hoping DD was tall enough for Soarin', but when we finally arrived there (we wandered, I took pictures), she was half an inch too short. I'm not one to argue about rules, particularly when my daughter's safety is potentially at stake.

Wandering photos:

DSCF2056.JPG

DSCF2053.JPG

DSCF2060.JPG

So we consoled ourselves with pastries and waited for Living with the Land to open. DD wasn't too bummed about all of this, but she made sure to remind me that she is a big girl. I told her that we all knew but that being a big girl was sometimes about height too. Hashtag threeyearoldprobs.

FYI: When they do this type of rope drop, you can't leave the building once you're in. Just sayin'.

Let's go in, shall we?

DSCF2054.JPG

(Woo, that's seriously blurry.)

I personally have a fondness for this pavilion. Even the smell triggers positive scent memories.

DSCF2061.JPG

DSCF2064.JPG

When Sunshine Seasons opened around 830, we grabbed from the Grab n Go and chose a table. We were the only ones in the area a that time. It was very relaxing. Since I started work again in August, I cherish any quiet time I can get with my girl.

DSCF2062.JPG

DSCF2075.JPG

The treats we chose were a chocolate croissant (because chocolate croissant) and a caramel apple crumb cake (I think). DD ate all the apples from the cake. I savored the rest. Ha. Calories count, but I did it anyway.

DSCF2067.JPG

Evidently Anna and Elsa joined us for breakfast too. See above.

DSCF2066.JPG

After our food, we got in line for Living with the Land. Well, not so much a line. A clump of people. After about twenty minutes, they let us board. DD and I were the first to board the first boat of the day. It's the little things, people. I was so happy.

I have always loved Living with the Land. Sometimes when I walk out my front door in the spring here in NC, I catch a whiff of LWTL. It maks me smile.

My curious DD asked lots of good questions, and we saw some of her favorite fruits and vegetables.

When we exited the ride, we were finally permitted to leave the building, so we headed over to The Seas with Nemo and Friends. I didn't bother with ride photos, but I did grab some in the aquarium after. We spent a good chunk of time in here, as we both love most things water-related.

From within the shark.

DSCF2088.JPG

The manatees were very active and fun to watch.

DSCF2095.JPG

We found him. And several of his friends.

DSCF2092.JPG

When we left the Big Blue World, we went for a Journey into the Imagination.

DSCF2098.jpg

Song officially stuck in head for the rest of the day.

The Image Works are fun with a kid. Maybe that's just me, though.

At this point, I opted for a ride on Ellen's Energy Adventure. DD loves dinosaurs, but the dark parts of this one were not her favorite. Still, she "was very brave", as she reminded us. Indeed, she was. :)

DSCF2107.JPG

Epcot was always my favorite park, what with all the learning and the countries. But my priorities changing as they have, I'm amending it to Magic Kingdom. Cycle of life, I suppose. That said, we went to Mexico...

We boarded a monorail, then another, and arrived at the Magic Kingdom.

When we arrived at the Magic Kingdom, we were met by this throng of people.

DSCF2114.JPG

What brought them together, you ask?

Why, a parade, of course!

DSCF2115.JPG

Some parade watchers generously let us squeeze in on their spot, so we were able to catch a glimpse of the floats. Including this frosty guy:

DSCF2116.JPG

Olaf, not the owner of that blonde mane to the right.

DSCF2117.JPG

The crowds parted, and we made our way up Main Street.

DSCF2119.JPG

DSCF2120.JPG

At some point I changed all of our Epcot Fastpass+ to MK for the afternoon. So our first ride was Winnie the Pooh, an experience I would not have waited for otherwise.

Only shot I have. Curious.

We also had a Fastpass+ for Jungle Cruise. I had shown DD the videos on Youtube, so she was into this ride. It was a special request from her.

DSCF2124.JPG

Skipper Tom had some good holiday jokes, and his delivery was great. Lots of chuckles on our cruise.

DSCF2126.JPG

I think the beard helped his cause.

DSCF2128.JPG

Why are the gorillas in charge of wrapping? They have a good turn over rate. Budumcha!

My camera must have died at this point... or the strap was hurting my neck too much... either way, no more photos from this day. I was trying to get us back before too late to cut down on the daughter's overtired grumpiness. I know that we rode Pirates (with my brave girl, of course) and the Carpets. Certainly we rode Dumbo and the Teacups again. We also hit Small World for the second time.

As you can tell, I keep good mental notes. ;)

The next photo in my bank is this:

DSCF2133.JPG

Day three started dark and early at Animal Kingdom. Once again, we made rope drop. Once again, we were too early to ride anything. But what matter? We had an apple turnover from the Kusafari Bakery and waited for a safari. :)

DSCF2137.jpg

Waiting time means picture time.

DSCF2138.jpg

The details in this park are impeccable.

DSCF2141.JPG

DSCF2143.JPG

Ooh! Look! Real animals!

DSCF2152.jpg

DSCF2155.JPG

I knew capturing most creatures would be difficult, so I just enjoyed the ride. The cheetahs and the female lion were up and about. We also saw white rhinos, a warthog, and ankole cattle. Several other horned creatures as well. Daughter was happy to spot squirrels and ducks. Haha.

Cute story alert: I had my arm around my kiddo, and she kept moving my arm down. I thought it was her attempt to claim independence until she told me not to put my hand on the edge of the truck. She was worried the animals would bite it. What a sweet heart.
