ISTCrew's Universal Trip Report

I decided about a month ago that I should get a Universal annual pass. So, on May 9th, both Tifani and I got one. Here are the events that occurred on that day (lol...this is turning into a Texas Chainsaw Massacre)

My mom and I got out of the car, and started our 50 mile hike to the Universal Studios gates. My friend Kiara was going to meet me there. I met up with her, and we waited in line to get my pass. I said bye to my mom, and we were off. It was 9:45, and we were meeting Tifani at 10am. Kiara and I went into the park, and our first stop was Jimmy Neutron. The line was only 10 minutes, so we figured that we'll wait, and then go to the front of the park to meet Tifani. I thought Jimmy was alright, but it wasn't anything to write home about. We got out, and my phone started ringing. It was 10:15, and Tifani was on the other line.

*me* - "Oh hey Tifani. You Here?"
*Tifani* - "Ah, no. I'm at Publix."
*me* - "Tifani, why the heck are you at Publix?!"
*Tifani* - "Cuz my mom needed to get some things. We're leaving now, but we gotta stop by Burger King to get my Annual Pass coupon"
*me* - "Tifani....just call me when you get here"

So after she called, Kiara and I went over to Men in Black. I had never done it before, and it was walk on, so we got right in. I was very impressed with the ride. We did it twice. When it first started, and I saw the cardboard cutouts of the aliens, I was saying to myself "All this talk about it being better than Buzz Lightyear..." and then we turned the corner. I was very impressed with the theme of the ride too, with the fake "Universe and you" presentation. It was kinda stupid though, in the elevator, the employee left the doors on the other side open, and it was obvious that we didn't move 1 inch (think Living Seas Hydrolators). After doing that twice, Tifani called me and said she was waiting by the Lucy Tribute. We walked over, and Tifani and her mom were there. Her mom got a pass aswell. So, all 4 of us started walking through the park. We got to Earthquake, and did that. Tifani was picked as a volunteer sailor for the preshow. After that boring "attraction" we walked over to Men in Black, and did that again!. We were all starving, and the first restaurant we saw was "international screenings" or something like that. All I know is that I ordered off of the Italian menu, and got the Chicken Parmesan. That has got to be the best theme park food I have ever had. Kiara, Tifani and I were ready to do some real rides, so we headed over to Islands of Adventure. Tifani's mom stayed at the Studios. We got to the entrance, and first headed over to The Hulk. The line was 60 minutes, so we kept going clockwise around the lake. Dudley was an hour, and we decided to come back, since that is my favorite ride in the whole park. We went over to Jurassic Park, and it was obvious that everything had over a 45 minute wait. Hot and exhausted, we just decided to wait for Dudley Do-Right since most of the queue was in the AC and we would get wet. When you are waiting outside in that line, you're baking. It was SO hot, the line was muddy, and I guess it was "lets not put deodorant on" day, because people were STINKING!. We got on the ride and cooled off. We got our "Universal Express" passes for JP River Adventure (I had never been on it). Our time was 5pm-6pm. It was 3pm at the time, and The Hulk was our next stop. The line was 45minutes, and the free lockers were only available for 30 minute rentals, so the singles line was our only option. All 3 of us were on the same train, but not next to each other. I also did not care for having to wait underneath the station, next to machinery, enclosed by a fence for the singles line. We got off, got our stuff from the locker, and headed over to JP. I have to say, Jurassic Park River Adventure was so dumb. It was a great drop and all, but those AA Dinosaurs are nothing compared to that of DINOSAUR! and the whole storyline was just so weak.

We were all getting tired and hungry and the last ride that we just had to ride was Dueling Dragons. We were able to do both Fire and Ice. I liked those much better than I do the Hulk. We walked through Suess Landing and out to the exit. We walked through "the 50 mile mall" or as others refer to it, CityWalk, and met Tifani's mom.

So, it was a great day. I was surprised with how Universal is atleast trying to make it's "resort" nice. Just little things that you would never see at Disney that Universal makes as the norm. One being that the Universal "employees" are nowhere near as nice, friendly, or helpful as Disney Castmembers are. Graffiti is everywhere in the park, and things are not kept as clean. Case in point was the Dudley queue. It was muddy and nasty. The Dueling Dragons queue had beer bottles all over.Soda was 25 cents more than Disney's. Parking was 1$ more...Oh yea, Don't even get me started on the Parking Garage lol.

I liked Universal's locker system. Dueling Dragons was available for an hour and 15 minutes, but the Hulks was only for 30 minutes. That was stupid. Does it change depending on how busy the ride is? I liked the fingerprint system though. I prefer Universal's AP's over Disney's. Universal's has my picture on it, and is made of plastic.

It was a great day, but there is no way Universal can ever beat out Disney. I felt dirty just being there lol. I heard Mummy TR's will start tomorrow, so next weekend will be a Universal/Disney combo. A DISNEY ISTCrew Original should be up next weekend.

Sounds like you had a good time Patrick. At least now you know MIB is twenty times better than Buzz! :D

Sorry to hear about your experiences with CMs, garbage, and graffiti. Where did you see the graffiti? IOA? USF? I do know there's some graffiti in New York but I believe it's just part of the area. I do agree with you on the trash, the parks can have some trash lying around at many times, but not everywhere, or at least from where I can see. I guess that's just something someone who visits WDW a lot more will notice.....:)

By graffiti, I meant "--- WAZ HERE 2004" scratched into poles and things like that.

Yes, that is true. Both have good, and both have bad. I prefer Disney over Universal any day, but I have learned to like them both.

And I believe Disney is (MUCH) better than Universal...

Like I said, both have the good things, and both have the bad. One thing I really didn't like was the state of the resort when I pulled in. I'm not sure if this is the only entrance, but the one that I went through had like a giant baren field on the right, with fallen construction walls/barriers up around it. I thought it looked aweful.

Not having been to Universal in 3 years, I was surprised with how hard they are trying to make it nice. The hotels looked awesome, and I like how everything is all connected.

If plans stay the same, I will be going to Disney on Friday, after school, and Universal on Saturday. I am also registered for the May 22nd Mummy Preview.

there's so much arguing back and forth on which is better, can't we just leave it be? Haven't we all seen every argument for and against each place? I'm glad you're going both types of updates, Patrick. I'm a fan of both pretty equally, but I just enjoy reading what's going on at each place since I don't have the fortune of being able to go all the time.

Keep up the great work.

Is there a reason you chose not to ride some of the best rides in the parks? No Spider-Man, Shrek, Cat in the Hat, Popeye, Jaws, ET, yet you decided to do the mediocre rides like Earthquake? Seems a little odd but to each his own I guess. Also, not sure if you were just oblivious or not but The Mummy staged a soft opening the day you were there for about 5 hours. As for Grafitti, I have never seen any in my more than 30 trips to Universal. Not sure where you were looking but I'm sure that if there really was any, it would be painted over by the end of the day. Also, Dudley and its queue just finished a 3 month rehab and I highly doubt it was "dirty" at all. Not sure why there would be mud in the queue if there is no dirt to mix with water to make the mud in the first place.

To be honest I love both very much. It's a shame you ran into the parks in bad conditions although I've never seen there dirt, rubbish or graffiti! As someone else said it was probably taken care of by the end of the day. I know from my visit that UEs were very nice and always played along with the theme. It's a shame you didn't ride Spiderman or Popeye's, which are both very enjoyable! I can't really understand why you didn't enjoy JPRA. It is very heavily themed and there's always something to see! It's not fair to compare it to DINOSAUR because 1. They aren't the same ride 2. Universal had to take care of a few more E-tickets at the same time while over at AK this was THE attraction at opening. (BTW, both stories are weak, but then again, it's only a ride. I've never seen a ride with a "strong" storyline )... As someone stated there will always be the Disney vs. Universal thing so the best thing to do is just to enjoy both and to try not to compare the two. Thanks for the trip report! I enjoyed it very much! :)

I have been on Spiderman and Popeye before. I have been to IOA alot before I got my pass. The Studios was the park I didn't visit much. I have done evereything in each park atleast once (except Shrek, I haven't done that yet).

I know the Disney/Universal thing will go on forever. I just prefer Disney more, no need for an arguement.

Another thing that I really did not like was the tv's in line for Jimmy advertising items in the Nickelodeon Shop. I can't wait to go back on Saturday though.

Oh, and just to let you know, I'm not going to be doing Universal Originals. I only did this thread to share how I liked my first trip using my AP. If I can get on the Mummy on Satuday, I'll probably write up a review of that.

I have not been to Universal since 1994 when Jaws was new and the park was still exciting.

Two of my favorite attractions there are the Lucy Tribute and the Jurassic Park museum type area. The memoribilia was fun to look at at both places.

Back to the Future used to be my favorite ride, so much better than Star Tours and Body Wars b/c the screen wrapped around you and the cars only held a few people. It was just so immersive. Many say that ride is weak and stinky now...I'm glad my last impression is still of an amazing ride.

I have not been to Islands of Adv since 1999. I do not even know if the park was completely and officially open yet, b/c they had claimers everwhere saying they aren't responsible for rides being broken down. And they were always broken down. We waited 3 times for Spiderman and never got on. We had the 3D glasses in our hands, and were turned away. And they didn't even give you anything to get back in front when it was fixed. We did not like that. The three rollercoasters were great fun, and for some reason had no lines all day.

I wouldn't mind going to Universal or Islands today. Haha.
