It's a valid question. Kids around here can't access the internet except certain sites that pertain to educational materials and research.

Same with our school... except ours blocks both ography and electric commerce.

I think its good that it only blocks that. Sometimes, a student might be trying to find information on a health topic, and due to the system we had last year (Bess) they couldn't view the information because of certain words in the text of the article.

Exactly. Thats what most schools are doing. As long as it doesnt have to do with Ebay, or hacking

Actually in a lot of cases, the schools themselves don't get a choice on how they filter content. The Internet is still a very strange place in the legal world.

In some states, schools and libraries are mandated to what they must not ALLOW, and in other states, schools and libraries are mandated to what they must not FILTER. Still, in other states, blocking is completely illegal by any governement agency. If that isn't confusing enough, the federal courts have also chimed in on this issue (regarding free speech) from time to time.

Private schools and Public schools / libraries are held to completely different sets of standards as well because legally one is an extension of the government, while the other is not. Then on top of all that mumbo jumbo, you have COPPA implications (even on sites like this one).

It's an interesting world out there!! Be very, very afraid. :D

schools here have access to "family" sites...no o,IM no e-mail, no downloading sites. Sports, search engines, data bases and WDWMagic are OK. But just try to get some computer time!

Good old Bess. Our school used that also. But they ended up changing it last year. They had big problems with people playing games also, so they blocked any sites with games :(

Games havn't been blocked... YET. But.. if they do that, students are just going to download emulators to the computers and dowload roms (some already do..). I don't know what I would do without javanoid and solitare.

I dont know what my school uses, but, it blocks and all that, but we can play games, I can get on AIM, and check my mail there. Anyway, Im on from 8-45 to 9-20, thats second period, and I may be popping on AIM any time in there. It's like, we can go on Pogo, or Yahoo games, but I dont do any of that, I'd rather chat with my neighbors. But, once in awhile, it DOES block some things, and when it does, its got this dude, and he pops up, and puts his big ol hand right in your face. Its kinda rude:o

 That's too funny. I would love to see it. With Bess it's this dumb dog that comes and says you can't access it. And it says why. Then when they changed, it brought up the same thing pretty much. Just different layout and pictures.
