I've heard that Disney sometimes spot checks it's Cast Members to see if they are smiling. If they are not a hand sign is made by placing two fingers on either end of the mouth making the smile. I've heard regular guests can do this too but I wouldn't dare try

Managers will occasionally drop by and encourage CMs to smile or tell them to cheer up if they see them looking unhappy or bored, but there's no secret smile patrol or anything like that.

While I agree that the CMs should have a happy demeanor, I disagree with having a smile plastered on one's face during the entire shift. It hurts after a while! Seriously:lol:

I think that they should have "secret spot checkers" in the parks because there has been a drop in the "MAGIC" at the parks. If food stores "shop" there employees and sent out undercover associates to check on the cashiers then I think Disney should do it to. It can't hurt

They should do some spot checking at Haunted Mansion. You'd think the CMs there were trained not to smile.

well, I know that they send "secret shoppers" into the stores, because I knew a few people who worked in merchandise, and I know that Minnie and Mickey and all the other characters are "secretly" watched every so often to make sure they're whipping up magic correctly.... so I imagine area managers and higher ups might keep an eye on their CMs, but I doubt there's some secret hand motion or anything.

I've seen it happen. But seriously, a smile doesn't increase the magic unless it's a heartfelt smile, so I always preferred it if a manager stopped by and joked for a while rather than giving the "signal".

Makes sense they would do this when you think about it. Just like the poster above said. Grocery stores do it, so why shouldn't Disney. :)

There isn't a signal to tell someone to smile at least not that I encountered on my CP. So that makes me think that there isn't one. I think that would look really stupid if that was done instead of a manager walking up to a CM encouraging them to smile.
