I realize that this is a bit of an odd question, but is there a tour you can go on where you ride Space Mtn with the lights on?
My husband and I are having a small bet about this. I say no, he says that he "works with a guy who knew a girl who worked at the Magic Kingdom once". I'm coming to the experts here at WDWMagic:wave:
Thanks for all answers!

Unfortunately, no, there is not (at least that I am aware of).

I rode it once with the lights on and would love to do it one more time (I did not have a camera with me at the time :brick:. It is a cool experience. )

There is no tour that enables you to ride Space Mountain with the lights on. I think, with the 'connection' he made to the girl working at the Magic Kingdom, this may have been the correct story:

Towards the beginning of the College Program for Magic Kingdom CPs, they have a "round-up" or "blast-off" party. Depending on the year, they are held either in Frontierland (round-up) or Tommorrowland (blast-off). For the MK CP "Blast -off" one of the big perks is the ability to be able to ride Space Mountain with the lights on.

I hope that makes sense, because at 1:30am it doesn't make a lot of sense for me.

Oh man, I'm a Magic Kingdom CP, but there's a "round-up" coming up instead of the blast-off. I wish you hadn't told me about that, I would have loved to be able to ride Space Mountain with the lights on. :(

Only if you're a CM

The American Coaster Enthusiast (ACE) were just recently allowed to ride with the lights on. It was Coaster Con XXIX and they had a early morning ERT (Extended Ride Time) and during this ride time the lights were on at Space Mountain, according to the article cameras were buzzing, so maybe we will have a video online soon.

Sometime during middle school, I went with my class to the Magic Kingdom where they took us onto some of the rides before the park opened, one of them being Space Mountain with the lights on. They were trying to demonstrate something involving physics, but that really wasn't anything of my concern at the time.:D

that made my wife realize how silly she was for screaming her head off all through that ride. lol

That video really shows just how bumpy that track has gotten though. I'd love to see it get the refurb it so deserves. Like I've said before, I want it to maintain it's innocent charm, so no loops and corkscrews. But lets do something to bring it up to snuff.

What did you think it would look like? The only thing innovative about Space Mountain when it opened was the ride in the dark. The coasters are typical Wild Mouse designs that have been around since the early 50's. By putting them in the dark, Disney created a show attraction, rather than just having two more Wild Mouse Coasters. By the way, the Primevel Whirl coasters at AK are also Wild Mouse coasters -- they have modified train cars which can spin freely or an a programed basis as you go through the ride. The format is basically up a lift hill, then down a zigzag course with a few bumps along the way, little air time, the thrill is in the curves.

Actually, SM isn't a Wild Mouse Coaster. Primeval Whirl and Mullohand Madness (DCA) are Wild Mouse Coasters. SM and the Matterhorn (DL) utilize a track (that at the time) was revolutionary in the coaster world. Not only was SM one of the first dark coasters, it was also one of the first to utilize the tubular dual rod track form found in the Matterhorn. The ride itself was very ahead of its time.

If the ride does get gutted like DL's version did, Disney will most likely ditch the dual track operating mode and create a longer and possibly more intense track. SM's days in its current state are numbered-the cast members have already begun a countdown until its doomsday. It won't be too long from now...:animwink:

This is the most common way to see it with the lights on for guest. Any other way is just with special events...and they are kind of rare.

The only other way is to get stuck out there...

As for riding with the lights on, like its been said, it really isn't what you would think it would be. That or the fact that I have ridden with the lights on more times then I can count maybe starting to get to my head.... :lookaroun

Oh wait...did I ride with the lights on this morning?
