Is the 10 Commandments an Easter Movie?

This is not the first year that the geniuses at ABC have done this, but it continues to irk me.

On Easter Sunday, they show The 10 Commandments.

Hardly an Easter movie, IMHO.

Do they just think that because it is Easter, any old Biblical epic will do?

It's because of the Jewish holiday of Passover it usually falls around Easter (someone correctme if I'm wrong) and Passover is the 8 day observince of when the Israelites (Jewish slaves) were given their freedom from Eygpt.

No, it's because "The Greatest Story Ever Told" (1965) was such a very bad movie. Robert Blake was even in that movie!

Passover always falls "around Easter".

Easter is the first Sunday after the first full moon after the Spring Equinox. The first night of Passover is the night of the full moon.

The Last Supper was a Passover seder. (unless you agree with the Gospel of John. Let's not go there--k?)

My point here is--Easter is a decidedly Christian holiday. And while Christians must (but don't always) acknowledge the Jewish heritage, (Jesus was, after all, Jewish) it would be nice to have a movie on Easter Sunday night with a New Testament theme.

And I agree, "The Greatest Story Ever Told" wasn't told all that well. However, there are other movies. Zefferelli made one in the early 70's with Olivia Hussey (whom he had used in "Romeo & Juliet") as the young Virgin Mary.

I think it's an appropriate tie-in, given the significance of Passover to the original Good Friday/Easter. But I think they play it mostly because it has become such a tradition.

The film of which you speak is "Jesus of Nazareth" (1977) and was produced as an NBC made for TV movie in 1977. It is 6 hours long! While I'll agree it's a good movie (i.e. made for TV movie) it just doesn't have the same production values as a regular theatrical movie release. For one, the sound track stinks. Also, I don't think ABC is really interested in showing a product that was originally produced for NBC and then released by CBS/FOX on video and DVD.

Maybe you weren't paying attention :). "King of Kings" was on too, and I def. think that is a new testament themed movie:)

Nothing compares to the Ten Commandments. Not trying to put those films about Jesus down but for the most part they are a bit of a downer for a holiday that is suppose to be joyous.

without Good Friday, there is no reason for Easter

ArchiDanDisney--you are right--I wasn't paying attention. Truthfully, after being up at 5 AM, I was ready to get some sleep pretty early in the evening.

Let us not forget that easter is about Jesus' reserection and passover is to commerate the angel of death passing over the houses of the hebrews durring the plagues and there dates of observances fall using solar and lunar rules to determin there date and they always fall durring the same week but not always the same date and can be a little eariler or later
