Is it all about the rides?

I think you make some good points there. Our kids are grown now, so DH and I approach things a lot differently than when they were little. And once, when they were teens, we "did" 4 parks in one day. Never again!!!!

That's a lot! I've heard some of my friends' older kids come back from school trips bragging that they did 4 parks in 1 day, but I don't think I could do it with the family.

Something else I was thinking about with AK and the arguments there is that a lot of the top zoos have used AK as an example to update their exhibits. Quite a few have even hired people directly responsible for AK to recreate some of that theme park vibe within their zoos. Our city's chimp exhibit was the first of several AK style ultra immersive upgrades to bring that kind of appeal factor on the local level. Now, I know AK is MUCH more than a zoo, but when more and more kids are getting local zoos with theme park wow factor...it can take away from that AK experience and diminish the value to the parents. So, that's just another factor I see creating at least some issues.

True, but it's so much more than a zoo!

Just like Las Vegas is not just gambling WDW is not just rides unless you want it to be.

No, it's so much worse than that!!!

Happy Anniversary to you.
Happy Anniversary to you.
Happy Anniversary to Neeee-mooo.
Happy...oh, that's enough.

Yes, it is about the rides. That's the big draw. That's why people go to parks. To ride rides. Very few would pay to go in, look at buildings, do M&Gs, eat and shop.

No, it isn't just the rides. The reason I like Disney (and Uni) is the theming. It makes it more fun - more entertaining. It's all those little extras that make it worth the extra dough. There are many Disney rides that would totally suck but for theming. IASW, for example, would be no fun at all if it were just darkness.

So, IMO, its both. But the rides matter much, much more than all the M&Gs, etc.

And the shows.

Disney changes with each individual or family as they progress through life. When the kids were first introduced to WDW, it was all about the characters, FL, and ToonTown. As the kids grew older, we sometimes split-up while in a park. DH/DS went to TL to ride SM (2 hour wait), while I took DD to FL to ride Dumbo (1 hour wait). Now we go to a park early, ride the rides (based on story and thrills)and see the shows we want, people watch, take paths less traveled, etc...not in the same 'hurry' we were before. If a line is long on a ride that we would normally do, we usually just let it be...they'll always be another day, year, etc...:)

That sounds so familiar! The first time we took our daughter, she was 2, and Dumbo was the only thing she wanted to ride. I waited with her in the hot sun while DH and my nephew waited for the newly-opened Thunder Mountain. They rode that and Space Mountain before we got on Dumbo.

When I am at WDW theme parks, I am there for rides, shows, looking at shops and taking my time going through a park.

It is more than Rides for a park to be considered a half day. A middle age couple I know thinks DHS is a half day park, but it isn't caused by rides. They take their time at all the parks, shopping, doing attractions, etc. They do shows, but the problem is they don't DHS live show during the day for all their trips because the shows never changed like Indiana Jones Stunt Spectacular. I think they do Muppetvision 3d for all their trips though. The Middle age couple also can't do TOT, Star Tours: the Adventure Continues, and Rock 'n Roller coaster at DHS.They only do Toy Story Midway Mania depending on the fast for fast pass, or the wait time is.

DHS is half a day park for middle aged couple because they don't do a lot of shows during a day and is limited to what type rides they can do to different health problems such as back problems. I think they do some meet and greets in the past.

We had to do IASW about six times that trip. She acted as if she'd never seen each and every time we went on it. She loved the dolls and singing.

If you would have asked me this question when I was a kid on my first 5 or 10 trips I would have said "Heck Yea, its ALL about the rides." Now that I'm....um....a little older, its a lot less about the rides and more about the food the drink and the nostalgia. I enjoy just being there. We enjoy shopping, listening to all the music we've come to love over the years, eating that Dole Whip float, drinking that avocado margarita (or two) and seeing everything we've seen dozens of times before. And yes, we enjoy the rides, its just not our main focus any longer. Geez, I just made myself feel old.

After reading and posting here for the past 8 years (actually 8 years today!), I'm noticing more and more that many people judge the Disney parks strictly by their ride experiences. AK and DHS are only half-day parks because there's "not enough to do". The new Fantasy land is judged by the success of the Mermaid ride (and the coming-someday Snow White ride). World Showcase is "boring" because there aren't enough rides to do.

Maybe it's just that I'm old enough now to appreciate little things more, or perhaps it's because I've "done" the rides enough times now that it's no big deal if I miss a few, but I really feel like so many people miss out on so much that Disney has to offer. Perhaps it's the ridiculous price of park tickets that makes you want to get your money's worth of fun ,or maybe some primeval instinct that isn't satisfied until all is conquered, I don't know. Thoughts?

i agree...people who see Disney as an amusement park are missing out on all the Disney has to offer...little details...that separate Disney from every other vacation spot. You pay almost as much for park tickets anywhere else and nowhere as much bang for your buck...
