Is early August worth it?

Ok, so here is my dilemma. We spent a week at Disney World the last week of January this year for our family vacation. Obviously, the weather was great and there were no crowds. We live in Texas and try to get to DW at least once a year or so and this was our 4th trip with our kids.

My family and I will be in Orlando from August 4-11 for a convention and will have Friday, Saturday, and Sunday (Aug. 9, 10, 11) off to play. We are huge DW fans and it is hard to imagine being that close to DW and not go but I also know that it will be hot and the crowds will be high. We have never been during the summer when crowds are high with our kids so I am trying to decide if it will be worth it or if the kids will be disappointed in how long the lines are and the fact that they may not get to do it all. Their ages are 10, 7, and 7.

I would love to hear your thoughts and experiences.

Do the water parks something not you do in January and get there early. You can also go to DTD and enjoy bowling, Circe du Solie (sp), Disney Quest, or even a movie
I live in FL. and it will be hot and humid especially standing in lines at the parks. If this the only time you can go absolutely put up with the heat and crowds. If you come at other times do other things.

That is a great idea. We have never been to the water parks so the kids would probably love it. Maybe we could do one of those one day and Magic Kingdom one of the other days. I'm also thinking we would not be doing meet & greets and things like that since we were just there.

We went in August 2 years ago (2011) because my son's Little League team did not go as far as we anticipated. We are from Pennsylvania, I told my wife to find something to do, 3 weeks later we were at the Hilton Bonnet Creek. We only did the waterparks for 7 days. It was outstanding. Very hot but with the right amount of sunscreen and the water it was fine.

Similar situation this year too. We are headed down in 17 days (8/3). We are taking advantage of our annual passes from last November. We'll hit all the parks but most time will be at the water parks again. Later nights at the parks, MK open until 11:00 pm every night, Studios until 10:00 pm. Our first time staying off property, we'll see how that works. But, I'd never turn down the chance to go to Disney World.

Go and have fun.

Disney is always worth it :D We will be there August 4-11 too...went the same week last year and yes it was hot (but what part of the country isn't in August?) but the crowds were definitely manageable. If you prepare your kids and lower your expectations of "doing it all", you will have a great time.

After reviewing the crowd calendar it appears the Ak is best for the 9th, MK is 7.1 and AK slightly lower the 10th and both are in the 6.9 range for the 11th. Go for it, with good planning it could well be worth it!

We have been there in the summer. It is fine if you take your time, lower your expectations of doing it all, take a relaxed que-sera-sera attitude, and plan on taking a mid-day break to get out of the heat. Although I usually do not wish rain on anyone, a brief mid-day shower is not unusual, can help clear out some of the crowds, and can lower the blaze index even with raised humidity. Just be prepared for a rain shower (ponchos, shoes). I'd go in August any chance I had.

One Little Spark...
I go every year in August...I prefer second Wednesday to fourth Wednesday (dates do not matter so much...it's when in the month).

I notice a significant crowd difference the second week of our stay.

However, the first week isn't bad at all. You all will have fun. Just be ready for heat and rain!

Hopefully for the better. We are going the 8/14-8/18. Haven't been to Disney in the summer in years. I have always waited til at least Labor Day to go. It's my son's birthday and he's been talking about it all year so we are making an exception. We usually don't go that time of year because of the heat. We are native Floridians so go figure. We want to do a water park on the 15th but that ticket I won't buy til the day before so I can check the weather once we are there. The weather is unpredictable in August. The summer blackout is lifted on the 16th for seasonal passes so we'll purchase those too.

I'd go! Disney and Uni!

Parks are an entirely different experience in the summer. More crowded, plus heat and humidity. But it's still fun!

Have a good plan, make the most of your mornings (less chance of rain) and go for it! :)
