Is a fifth gate even possible?

I could imagine having a resort with five parks, but they'd need to be distinct parks, i.e. not have attractions that appeal to everyone evenly. If people visited WDW and skipped one of the five parks because "it's just for little kids" or "it's full of roller coasters" or "it's got too much edutainment", but overall all five parks drew crowds from their respective demographics, it seems like a good thing. That doesn't seem to be the way Disney is going, though... they're heading more to homogenizing the experience from park to park rather than the opposite.

Isn't that just turning the old raceway into a lot in order to exorcise its existence?
Where did you hear that? That lot was expanded a few years ago by using a good chunk of the old speedway, but I am not aware of any expansion beyond that.
Did they finish turning the Nascar track into Parking lot already? that's what I was referring too, haven't seen any images of that area in a while, Google maps is a few years behind the times

Yep, it was done shortly after the speedway closed back in 2015. One of the faster projects Disney has done recently.

I think it depends on how well they fall in love with the DLR third gate concept. It was truly the epitome of maximum money printing.

I agree with everybody that the existing parks need to be filled out with attractions before a fifth gate is built. That goes without saying. As does the land suitability issues and stuff--it's all been said.

As far as theme goes, I think a solid distinct theme would be a deep pull from 90's Eisnerian madness: Disney's America. That concept is robust enough to carry a park with varied lands and experiences, and it's concept does not bleed into other parks on the property (other than Liberty Square and The American Adventure). I do not think that this would ever be built today, however, because of the low IP potential. I bet the same would be said about Animal Kingdom if the park was pitched today, unfortunately.

In a way, I think Disney has already built a 'fifth gate'... it is just spread out across the other 4 parks. If you just go back to early-2017 and take into account everything that is planned over the next 2 years or so, you have one fantastic theme park. Pandora, Toy Story Land, Galaxy's Edge, the Tron Coaster, the Guardian of the Galaxy coaster, the new Mickey/Minnie rode, Ratatouille, the Epcot Space restaurant, Rivers of Light etc. That is a lot more than most or all of the parks opened up with.

Those things are not a “5th gate”...it really just makes up part of the ground they lost by doing almost nothing from 2001-2015 as they sat warming their Arses with their hands.
"Is a fifth gate even possibel?"

-"If you can dream it, we can do it."
Yeah...he died like 55 years ago...

If there ever were to be a 5th gate. You'd see hotels surrounding it. Look at Coronado. Look at the space. Look at "Flamingo Crossings".
They'll build first then announce. Not announce then build. Just sayin'.

With the exception of DVC, Disney normally does announce before they start building. Not sure what you are talking about with Flamingo, everything there is either third party or employee housing.

I believe they’re saying that there would be a fairly large expansion of infrastructure and support locations prior to a park announcement - which would be true as they built DAK stuff first...

But that doesn’t address the topic of whether it’s even possible. From an accounting and ROI perspective - it is not. Any news park would result in more park cannibalization/loss of overhead more than it would drive news business.

The choice of locations for a full park and one or more connected resorts would be pretty limited.

There’s only one number that matters: “7”

They failed to push the average stay past the wall of 7 days when they built DAK. Disney creates its own reality - but they are powerless against society...which means new parks make zero sense from a money perspective.

They have the land. They have the money. All they need is an idea and the numbers to make it work. We will get a 5th gate. It's just a question of when.

They have neither the labor nor the potential increase in customers to make it worthwhile.

Now if the world grows to 11 billion...and maybe 500 million US...and north of 75 mil in Orlando? Possible.

But we would have “other” problems then

Not that I expect a fifth gate til I'm an old, old man .... DisneySea baby!

Considered one of the best theme parks in the world (at least on the sites I have looked), imagineered in the good ol' USofA, but it's in Japan! Nothing against the Japanese, but it should be here! Or at least then, a replica!

Why people here don't have park envy, I don't get it!?!?

Get some PARK ENVY please!

... have a magical day :)

I think Disney should just follow Universal's lead and begin referring to Typhoon Lagoon and Blizzard Beach as theme parks as well. Then they can boast that they now have six gates. Voila!
