iPod/iTunes question

I have an iPod Mini & the latest version of iTunes... I recently just got a new computer, and my old computer is still in use but it's a piece of crap & VERY slow. I have about 600 songs on my old computer that I bought, or uploaded from CD's, and I have probably around 100 on my new computer.

Currently I am burning the songs on my new computer onto a disk and uploading them to my old slow computer. Is there anyway I can keep the songs that are on my iPod already (that I uploaded onto my iPod from my old computer) and upload the newer songs from my new computer without erasing my old songs? Or do I have to just keep doing what I'm doing - burning CD's, uploading the songs on my old computer, and uploading the songs onto my iPod?

Even better- is there a way I can get the old songs from my iPod and computer onto my new computer w/o burning 600 songs on CD's and transfering?

Thanks for your help! This is driving me crazy waiting for these songs to upload!

There is a program called iPodRip (Google it) that will transfer music files from an iPod to a computer.

The songs on your iPod will not erase if you hook it up to a different computer. You should be able to transfer them back and forth that way.

Thanks maelstrom :)

I have never hooked my iPod up to my new computer because I was under the impression they would all get erased and I would only be left with the few songs on this computer...

I'm about to look up iPodRip right now

Once again, thanks for the help/info

Make sure to disable automatic update for the iPod and enable hard drisk support. When you disable automatic update you can add songs to your iPod without erasing the ones already on it.

How do I disable automatic update for the iPod and enable hard disk support? Is it something that's on my iTunes account or do I do it from my iPod?

Thanks! :)

Technically, you don't need i-pod rip. There's a simpler way.

As Test Track mentioned, YOU MUST DISABLE iPod automatic update. i-tunes can be a very annoying and finicky program and will delete your songs...

Here's what you gotta do, hook up your i-pod (once automatic update is disabled), go to my computer. Look under your various drives for your ipod (it should appear just like your other drives. Mine comes up under H:). Next, click on on the i-pod drive, go to Tools << Folder Options. Hit the "view" tab.

There should be an option to "show hidden files and folders" Make sure this is checked.

Once you did this, the folder on your i-pod saying "ipod control" will appear. Click it and you will see a folder saying "music," which believe it or not, contains your music! Copy the folder (do not cut it or alter it) and paste it on your harddrive. Preferably, somewhere you will remember. Then, open up itunes and upload the folder to your library. VOILA!

side question . . .

On the side . . . what are your opinions about iPod shuffle vs. iPod mini? I'm looking for a gift for a teen and am not sure which would be better. Any opinions?

I don't have either- I have the iPod photo- but if it were me (mind you, I am not a teenager at all) I would take the mini because it still shows the songs and everything. From what I have seen of the shuffle (and I could be totally off on this since I have only glanced at the ipod shuffle) it doesn't have a display screen like the rest of the iPods....

Ipod mini holds about 1000 songs, shuffle about 100, mini has a display screen and shuffle doesn't. Also, shuffle is smaller than mini, about the size of a pack of gum. Check out these for more info...

I'd go for the Mini. It holds more songs, has a screen, and comes in four exciting colours (pink, blue, silver, green). I've held and played with both the Mini and the Shuffle and I like the Mini a whole lot better. Sure, the Shuffle is really small, but it feel so small that it might just break if you hold it the wrong way; it almost feels like a toy. The Mini, on the other hand, is solid.

I like my 30gb iPod Photo :D

Thanks for sharing . . . I was leaning towards the Mini, but love the slim, small look of the Shuffle!

I can definately understand wanting the smallness of the Shuffle. I don't know if you've ever actually held one but IT IS TINY! I think the Mini has a lot of advantages over the Shuffle. But listening preferences and habits could play a role in the decision too. I need a screen. No question. End of story. But you or someone else may not need one. Different strokes for different folks.

Ever since I got DSL I've been downloading from #D-C like crazy. My poor iBook's hard drive is only 40gb and I'm down to under 10gb now with all the music and programs on here and I'm sure my 30gb iPod is going to get filled too.
