Hi guys,

We really need your help with our Ipod please. We're new users and ou IPOD came with very little instructions!

But how do you actually transfer songs from ITUNES to the iPod? I understand that it automatically updates but if I didn't want it to do that how do I transfer them myself???

The songs I have put on my Ipod are also on my hard drive. I want to delete these songs but does that mean when I do this the next time I "update" the ipod it will delete the songs from it???

Apple have been pretty shoddy with explaining this so called "user friendly" device

If iTunes is set up to auto-synchronize with your iPod it will automatically add new songs from your HD to the iPod and take away songs from the iPod that are no longer on the HD. If it's not, you have to make all changes manually. Adding songs to the iPod is as simple as dragging them from your library to the iPod on the leftmost pane in iTunes. Removing them from the iPod and putting them back onto your hard drive is a bit tougher and you'll need something other than iTunes to do it.

To add songs to your library that are your PC harddrive...

Simply go to FILE >> ADD FOLDER TO LIBRARY.
Choose the correct folder and or file. Wahla...

As madison said, to add songs to your i-pod, connect it to your computer, via fire-wire or usb. It should appear on the left most panel of i-tunes. From here just drag and drop.

I hate the fact that i-tunes is preset to update itself with your library. It's really stupid. To diasble that, go to EDIT->PREFERENCES->I-pod. From here, you can disable this "feature." ;)

As for getting songs from the i-pod to the PC, it's really not that hard. If you check your drives under my computer, your i-pod (when connected, of course) will show up as a drive. If you have hidden folders visible, you can literally copy and paste all the music from the i-pod to harddrive.

I have an i-pod photo. I like it, but it is incredibly over priced.

wow you dont realise how much youve helped us guys!! thats seems loads clearer now, and ive managed to put 2 albums on it so far!!

to disable the automatic update, do you click on the "manually manage songs and updates"?

after this how would you get an individual song from the library to the Ipod? or when you click on update will it re-update the ipod to whats in the library or is there a way of just selecting certain songs to go on there?

Yes you do, but clicking the Manual Update you have to drag the files to your iPod you want to transfer.

Also, it drives Apple uses like me crazy but the proper name for the IPOD is iPod and ITUNES is iTunes (and it follows with iMove, iBook, etc).

So do I always have to have all the songs I want on my iPod on my computer aswell?

(When I delete them and I update my iPod it deletes them from that aswell)
This seems really stupid and is incredibly annoying, I bought a huge memory iPod because I want a huge number of songs on there which I certainly do not want clogging up my PC!!!!

If you stop automatic updates they will not erase the songs from your iPod when you plug it in if you change the songs in iTunes.

Sorry if I sound stupid here, but if I manually update my iPod how do I get more songs ON it without it automatically taking the one's I've deleted OFF my iPod?

Uh...since it's manual, nothing is done without your permission.

Think of it as just an additional hard drive that only holds music. You put stuff on. You take stuff off. As long as automatic update is disabled, this is true.

So... and again I apologise if I come across completeley dumb but I'm lost.

What happens at the moment is I delete songs off of iTunes because I don't want them on my PC but when I update my iPod with songs I DO want on my it, it updates adding the new songs but deletes the songs I have deleted from my PC.

You're telling me that I can select manual update which I have done. So now it's on manual update I can tell it to JUST ADD songs or JUST DELETE SONGS? How do I do this?? At the moment it's updating as it would on auto update (deleting and adding songs) but just when I tell it not automatically.

I can update it manually but I want to be able to just add songs and delete nothing!!!

AND....

Is it possible to shuffle genre'd songs? At the moment when I sellect shuffle it shuffles all song, is it possible to just say i.e Rock songs but Shuffle all the rock songs?

To be honest, what's your confusion? If you add a song to your i-pod, you add it. If you delete a song, you delete it. To delete a song from your PC, delete it off your harddrive. If that song is on your iPod, that's where it will remain. For all the iPod's faults, it certainly is pretty easy to use.

When I hook up iPod Photo to my PC, its set to do nothing. So, I add songs when I want to. Delete what I want to. My iPod does nothing without me doing it myself. You do realize that you can select multiple songs and drag and drop multiple stuff on your harddrive at once?

To do the latter option on your iPod, you can browse songs by genre. Put your play settles on shuffle.

Or, if you have a specific set of rock songs you want, create a playlist and shuffle that.

For people who are not terribly technically inclined the following Ipod advice:

1. Keep your Ipod updates automatic.
2. Keep all of your music on your PC as well as your Ipod. Otherwise its too easy to delete. Your Ipod IS NOT a backup of your music library. It is very difficult to get music off of your Ipod. Its easy to get it on.
3. If you do not want your whole library going to the ipod, make a playlist that is a subset of your library. Right-click your ipod and manually update only the following playlists, with that playlist being selected.
4. Do not buy an Ipod, repeat, do not buy an Ipod if your goal/purpose is to get your music off of your PC. It doesn't work that way.

My confusion is that when my iPod updates it DELETES AND UPDATES songs not one or the other.

I don't see how I can delete songs from my PC yet keep them on my iPod. If I was to delete songs from my hard drive and then say a month later edto add a new song, when I would update my iPod it would delete the songs I deleted from a month previously AND add the new track.

Is there any way around this?#

Thanks righttrack, I was starting to think this myself

You cannot set iTunes to only delete or only add songs automatically. If automatic update is enabled, it does both. If you do not want iTunes to delete songs from your iPod that are no longer on your hard drive, turn off automatic update. You will then have to manually add and remove songs from the iPod. You add songs by dragging them from your Library to the iPod on the left pane within iTunes. If you then click on the iPod, it'll show you on top how the transfer is going. To remove a song from the iPod, right click on it and click Clear (or something like that).

Also, remember that deleting a song from your iTunes library does not delete it from your hard drive. You must do that through Windows Explorer.

It seems from the discussions here that you are all talking about moving files from a PC to the iPod. Allow me to give you the way to make this painless, instinctive and simple - get rid of the PC buy a Mac and it will be transparent, simple and straightforward. This will get me lots of ugly PC comments, but is just simply, true.

While the Mac OS is easier for many to use rather than Windows, it does not change the fact that you must deal with Itunes (which is the same on Windows or Mac) to work with your Ipod. All of these questions here are Itunes related.

I use my Ipod like this:

I imported all of my CDs, plus downloaded MP3s and purchased Itunes store songs. I put all of these in a folder that all family members can use (we have 3 Ipods in our house). They are in my Library.

Everyone else in the house puts thier files in the same place. Occasionally to keep up, you have to File, Import folder into Itunes to keepup.

The whole house has access to the library and 1000s of songs. Each person then makes a playlist called "xxxxx's playlist" where xxxxx is their name, in their Itunes. The Ipod options are to not autofil, but to only replicate limited playlists, where the xxxxx's playlist is the primary one for that person. That way, my wife needn't listen to my Sportscenter podcasts, and I don't have to listen to John Mellencamp or 50 cent.

For the new user, with a hard-drive based ipod, its probably easier and better to autofill. Most people have way more space than they need to, so why not put everything on so you have it with you?

Do remember to clean up the metadata if you have downloaded MP3s. Edit them and put the Artist, Album, Genre, Year and Song Title so they are correct. It defeats the point of organization if this stuff is wrong or missing. Just right-click, Get Info, and fill out the form for the song.
