"Into The West" - Ruined by My Wife

My wife and I are pretty big LOTR fans and are just fascinated by Middle Earth and everything Tolkien. Well, my wife is a little more obsessed than I am, she's learning Quenya, ancient elvish as written and created my J.R.R. Tolkien.

Here's the fun part, she's really gotten into the elvish thing. Her mother even bought her the Evenstar necklace that Arwen gives Aragorn in the movies. This is really all cool, until she refers to "Into the West", the song from Return of the King....

One day she says, "this may sound morbid, but I want that song played at my funeral..."

What the...?!?!?! Tell me that you could listen to this song again after the love of your life tells you she wants it played at her funeral. All I could keep seeing was me in a cemetary at her grave, and thinking about life without her.....

I would kill her but then I'd have to hear the song!

it's a shame because it's a beautiful song, but Icannot hear it with the correct meaning in my head anymore.

Here are the lyrics:

Artist: Annie Lennox
Song: Into the West

Lay down
Your sweet and weary head
The night is falling
You have come to journey's end
Sleep now
And dream of the ones who came before
They are calling
From across the distant shore

Why do you weep?
What are these tears upon your face?
Soon you will see
All of your fears will pass away
Safe in my arms
You're only sleeping

What can you see
On the horizon?
Why do the white gulls call?
Across the sea
A pale moon rises
The ships have come to carry you home

And all will turn
To silver glass
A light on the water
All Souls pass

Hope fades
Into the world of night
Through shadows falling
Out of memory and time
Don't say
We have come now to the end
White shores are calling
You and I will meet again
And you'll be here in my arms
Just sleeping

Chorus

And all will turn
To silver glass
A light on the water
Grey ships pass
Into the West

To be honest the first time I heard this song was while watching the Oscars. I couldn't believe that it was Annie Lennox singing. It is a very beautiful song. I'm sure your wife means this as a comfort for you when the inevitable happens. Yes, she will be leaving you, but going to those she loves.(and she will be waiting for you).

First of all, thanks Tigsmom...

I agree with what you said, it's just a tough thought. I know life is fleeting, but we're married almost 2 1/2 years and in our mid to late 20's. The last thing I wanted to hear my wife refer to was her funeral.

It's very hard to consider your own mortality, especially at your age. However, ignoring it won't make it go away. I can tell you from personal experience that the more details you attend to before the fact, the easier it is on your loved ones.

Write down her selection and keep it in a safe place; add to it over the years, then forget about it until the day you need it.

Great advice. My mom knew she was dying (and tried to keep that fact from the family...but I took care of her so I knew).
She took care of all the details, left me a list of things she wanted & even signed her own DNR.

Maybe the two of you should sit down & discuss what you both want. Then follow the Mom's advice...write it down & file it away. (good from a legal stand point, too...wills, power of attorney, etc)

May you live many happy years together.

I should say that to my mother in law.
