Libby’s created its own variety of pumpkin.

Yes, Libby's created its own variety of pumpkin, called Libby's Special Seed, which is a proprietary strain of the Dickinson pumpkin. Libby's uses this pumpkin in all of their canned pumpkin products.
Libby's pumpkin is different from the traditional orange pumpkin you might think of when you think of pumpkin pie. Dickinson pumpkins are tan-skinned, beige, and smooth, and they more closely resemble squash. They are longer and tanner than sugar pumpkins, and their closest relative is butternut squash. Libby's uses Dickinson pumpkins because they taste and have a better texture than other pumpkins.
Libby's started as a canned meat company in the late 1800s, and they added canned pumpkin to their products in the late 1920s when they purchased Dickinson & Co., a pumpkin-packing company.
