Interesting cost reflection this morning...

Long story short, the husband and I got into a conversation this morning about $$ and what've spent thus far this year on travel. Not to be blabbing our business all over the place but it really ended up being a fascinating perspective for me, one I'm inclined to share.

We haven't done a dedicated WDW vacation in a couple years. No big secret there. Mostly I'm just not anxious to be around that many people all the time anymore. Our most expensive dedicated WDW trip that we've ever done was in early December 2007. During that year a lot of things changed for us and we suddenly had the ability to do WDW the way we always dreamed of so we did. Money did not limit us. Final tally for that 9 night trip was in the ballpark of $14k. What did we spend that on??? Let's break it down:

- First class airfare was roughly $900 x 4. Hubby loves to fly. He always wished we could "go big" in the skies so we did. Big splurge. Not entirely sure it was all that worth it to me but to him it was so it's all good.
- 9 nights in a Contemporary Tower MK View room at rack rate. At the time that was $455+tax per night. I tried to get a discount but they weren't available. We also tried the dining plan (when it included appetizer, entre, dessert, beverage, and gratuity). 10 day parkhopper tickets were in the package, too.
- More than a few meals & snacks were out of pocket.
- Souvenirs. If we wanted it, we bought it. That simple.
- Limo transfers to/from the airport. No DME. We were going big. What's a couple hundred bucks at this point?
- MVMCP.
- A segway tour for the hubby & me.
- Photopass CD.
- Private portrait sitting in the MK. ((I added in the sitting fee but not the $$ spent on the actual portraits. The sitting fee was less than $400.))

Sooooo, 9 night dream stay at WDW w/all the bells & whistles. $14k. Haven't spent anywhere near that on any trip since. That was our big one. Note the key word is: ONE. LOL! We feel absolutely blessed beyond words to have had the opportunity to do it and have no regrets. The memories are priceless. Right?

Just priced a MK View room at the Contemporary for roughly the same days this year, kids the same ages they were in 2007, dining plan, parkhoppers, & MVMCP tickets. Without another nickel spent on gratuities, OOP expenses, souvenirs, airfare, etc. etc. I'm seeing a price of $10,089. I'm guessing if we added on first class air and all the other crap we did it'd prob'ly push $20k if not more. First class air alone is insane these days.

This morning we were talking about this year's expenditures on travel. So far we've been on 2 Disney cruises. I'm going on 1 without my family next month then the hubby & I are leaving our teenagers at home while we go on another 7-night Disney Cruise for our anniversary. Let's add up the cost breakdown thru the end of September this year:

January: 8-night Bahamian on DCL Magic out of Galveston in 1-bedroom suite/concierge for our family of 4. Cruise cost including all gratuities, excursions/activities, etc. was roughly $7500. (We live near Galveston so no travel costs.)

May: 7-night Western Caribbean on DCL Fantasy out of Port Canaveral for our family of 4. 2 nights at Pop pre-cruise, day at Typhoon Lagoon, all travel costs, gratuities, parking, excursions, etc. total roughly $8k.

September: 4-night Bahamian DCL Dream out of Port Canaveral for just me (with the WDWMagic girls). Pre-cruise hotel at the Grand Floridian for 1-night (w/3 roommates), transfers, gratuities, excursions/activities, flights, and all additional expenses total about $1500.

September: 7-night Western Caribbean DCL Fantasy out of Port Canaveral for the husband & me. Cruise fare, gratuities, flights, pre-cruise hotel at Kidani Village for 2 nights, transfers, and excursions/activities total about $3500.

Total for all this year's cruising thru the end of September comes up to about $20,500. Granted, any flights that were incorporated this year have been on points. That's a tremendous savings in itself. Also, to note is that the May cruise was significantly more than our "norm" because we traveled during a busier, more expensive time with my brother. We generally seek out less-expensive times to cruise and special rates.

The point to all this is that for about what we'd spend on our 9-night WDW blow-out in today's terms we're sailing with Mickey for 26 nights. 15 of those nights my boys sailed. 22 of those nights my darling husband sailed. 26 nights I will have sailed. That's like almost a flippin' month! It's insane for me to wrap my brain around that!

And, no, we're not made of money or anything. We're oh-so crazy frugal in our everyday lives. Don't eat out much, don't go other places, don't go to movies, shop for bargains, don't get my hair & nails done constantly, etc. etc. We live in an inexpensive, less-than-stellar house. My husband works crazy amounts of hours, often multiple weeks without any days off. It's all relative. None of this comes easy which is why taking breaks and escaping has become more frequent. It's our time. Truly. We get on the ships and the cell phones have to be turned off. There's no connecting unless there's a dire emergency. Don't want folks thinking I'm yeah-yeah'ing about all this money I'm rolling in because I assure you I'm soooooo not! LOL!

Just wanted to show the price comparisons and breakdowns because I thought it was interesting.

$20k for a 9-night dream roll at WDW in Florida living it up.

Or $20k for 15 nights with our sons on the sea, in Key West, swimming with rays in Grand Cayman, paddleboarding off the beach of a fishing village in Mexico, driving xrails thru a jungle & swimming in a subteranean cave in Cozumel, and at Disney's private island in the Bahamas. PLUS, 5-night getaway for Mom with her pals. PLUS, 9-nights of peaceful bliss with my bestest friend snorkeling a shipwreck and a reef, relaxing, and swimming with manatees. That's a whole lot of bang for the Disney buck, really! Wowzers!

 Long story short...:p I had a friend who had ( wait for it ) 122 driving lessons, sat his test 18 times ,and passed on his 19th time..The money he spent I could have had a Disney 14 night vacation.:joyfull:

It's interesting to think of things in terms of what kind of Disney travel you could get for that amount.

Like next month is my 20th wedding anniversary. When we got married we were young and didn't have much. Our wedding was a small, very inexpensive family affair. For years we've tossed around the idea of a big wedding style vow renewal. Every time I look at the cost to do that I see another trip or even 2 for that amount and that's the end of that. :greedy: Can't tell ya how many times the husband has suggested I get a nicer set of wedding rings...but...helloooo!!! That's a week vacation with the family. I'd much rather have the time and memories than a bling-ring set.

while obviously you are comparing real trips... you're also comparing somewhat arbitrary price points with those trips.

Your blowout WDW trip was just that.. a major splurge. First Class Airfare, 9 nights at one of the most expensive rooms, etc.

If I do the same comparison.. our last two WDW trips were roughly 3k in costs each.
Our last cruise on the dream was roughly 4500 or so.. (I have yet to face the bills to total it :) )
and our coming cruise on the Fantasy is 5800 just for the cruise itself.. and will probably be close to 8k by the time we are done

So in my example.. DCL is still roughly 2-3x the cost of a stay at WDW. So DCL still looks like a significantly more expensive experience for a shorter length. But its a different experience and I like to think I'm exposing my kids to greater horizons rather than drilling in the same thing over and over.

I hear ya, @sweetpee_1993. This 4-night girls' cruise coming up is costing me probably a third of what a comparable 4 nights in WDW would. Granted, I always do moderate or deluxe, but by the time you add in lodging, food and assorted other extras, I feel like I'm getting a really good deal on this cruise.

Definitely! You can run those numbers up and down at either destination. Ooooh...like a 1-bedroom suite for the 15-night Panama Canal next May. As much as I'd love that, it's not worth $18k to me. :greedy:

The January 8-night earlier this year started out booked as a Kids Sail Free for roughly $3k in a verandah stateroom. That took a huge jump when the hubby upgraded us to a suite. So there was a premium there as was with the blow-out WDW trip.

Also, the May Western Carib was in a 05E aft verandah stateroom. Some may think of those as a premium accommodation. I'd compare the "level" in the grand scheme of stateroom categories as maybe a standard view at like Wilderness Lodge. You know?

We've done 9-night stays for a few thousand at WDW, too. Free dining at POFQ was quite the bargain, really. That was such an enjoyable trip all the way around.

The scale and costs can go up and down dramatically both on land & sea depending on your selections and the possibility of discounts or specials.

I'm with you, I'm looking to see/do more things (hoping the next Fantasy cruise I won't be sick so I can feel like I actually enjoyed what the ship has to offer). Then I'd like to see some other places, visit some other destinations, and maybe try other vacations entirely...God willing, of course!

My feelings... You've got to enjoy life while you can. You dont have to explain to anyone why you can afford any of your trips. If you can do it... do it. You built a decent life for yourself.... enjoy every moment you can fit in.
Cruise vs Disney 9 days...It's just wise to run the numbers and get the most for your money... Even if the cruise wasnt as good a deal and you wanted to go, sure. Do it. Money's just money. You can always work and make more. Enjoy your cruise to the fullest..And congrats to you & DH on the 20 years!!!!

we stay in a verrandah because I have 3 kids... it's really the best way to fit 5 ppl.

I wish I could be dropping 20k on vacations.. but my kids seem to find ways to soak up that much money on their month to month stuff :/

I wish I could take anyone and everyone with us. I have a feeling we may be slowing down a bit sooner than later. The boys will soon be tied to actual school schedules as they move beyond high school (oh the luxuries of homeschooling). The dynamics are already changing with DS17 now having to dance around a work schedule and requesting time off. This year has been pretty nice with the opportunities all the overtime the hubby has been working brings but then it totally blows to only have 1 day out of 14 with him not coming thru the door, eating dinner, then going straight to bed. It's a lot of trade-off for sure. Feels like when we go away is the only time we really get.

For sure. We were so young starting out 20 years ago. Literally had our clothes, a hand-me-down bed set, a beat-down old pickup, and each other to start. Everything we've got we've worked for. I'm sure we could've done a lot of things smarter over the years but it all brought us to where we are now. I wouldn't trade the memories for anything. Thanks for the congrats. My family truly is my greatest accomplishment considering it was the thing I always thought of as the most impossible for me to ever have.

Just struck me funny this morning how you can look at these various trips in terms of cost:time. No regrets for any of it smart or not. I don't even regret overpaying on the Fantasy in May to go with my brother & nieces then spending the stupid cruise sick as a dog. The good stuff that was in there was worth it. ;)

I don't regret any money spent on vacations. I wish I had the money to travel when and where we want but that all went away years ago when the economy tanked and our business went with it. We have survived however, and still manage to take a trip once a year.

We do go on the cheap, we save and pay off our card every month, in full, so I don't regret the months after vacation when we don't pay it all off. I just work some OT and know that it is all for the good of our credit and our minds. WDW is a happy place for us, I don't have to explain it to you all, you guys know already. So, we go to save our sanity and stroll around without a problem in the world for a week every year. Value resorts, here we come!

Oooooh...hatter...take it from me: delete your posts, man! What if he converts to Disney-ism and finds this?! Yikes! If there's no evidence then it never happened. I swear, if there's something you don't want repeated, read, or seen you should make sure that it never is manifested into any physical form. No writing. No typing. No hand-scrawled notes. No pictures. No video. No diagrams. Nothing. With no proof it never happened. Juuuuust sayin'.... and I'm sure now this creates a whooooole other garden of bloomin' questions as to why I would say that. There is great wisdom in the statement: A woman's heart is an ocean of secrets. :angelic:

We had the same sort of thing for our wedding (cheap) and are thinking of renewing our vows in a few years (on our 13th wedding anniversary)
